When you put the sparkplug clip on the end of the sparkplug wire, you want to first stick the wire through the boot and pull it out the other side, then you want to put the clip on so that you don't have to force the clip through the small end of the boot. Once you get the clip on, then you pull the wire back through the boot till it seats in place. Great Video and thanks for taking the time to show folks how to diagnose and replace a coil.

Nice video for helping people that are not Mechanically inclined to save themselves some money. The average cost here in NCs shop cost start at for diagnostic is 65. And 65 an hour measured on the 1/4 of the hour. So 22 minutes is going to be billed at 32.50 + 65.00 which comes to 97.50 plus tax and parts. It don't take long for the average owner to pay more to fix one than to buy a new one. Your helping people and keeping them from adding to the already disposal problems we have created with the replace it generation. Keep the good work up Kevin . Ive been working on small engines for 35years and a little good advice is better than none.

Hi Kevin- I have been working on my small gas engines for almost sixty years. You learn a lot by just working on them like you do. I always clean coils with brake cleaner first to blast away the oil-dirt pathway between the poles of the coil fields and then I follow up with a fine wire brush wheel on my drill. I do the same with the flywheel magnets. Dirt and oil paths can weaken the magnet pulse induction thus failing to produce the required electrical charge necessary to produce a good strong spark. The same is true for batteries. Pick up a very inexpensive plastic feeler gauge to place between the coil and the magnets when reinstalling the coil. This allows the magnets to hold the coil in place and makes inserting the screws more easily. Just a small turn of the flywheel will permit the removal of the gauge and a perfect spacing. Keep things clean and yourself so things last longer. :-)

This was the best diagnostic video I have seen as far as the ignition coil goes. It certainly addressed the problem I was diagnosing. I also tested the coil for resistance. Maybe not necessary considering a new coil would be $10. Just replace it. Thankyou for the excellent sequential trouble shooting video. It is excellent! Thankyou once again.
@biomed2560

Here's a second comment from Biomed. A few of your viewers have said 'why don't you test the coil with an ohmmeter?'. This is not an unreasonable question. If the coil is open circuit it will certainly show clearly and the coil will need to be replaced (unless the break is obvious and accessible). However the coil may show continuity and therefore have the appearance of being OK but if there is a shorted turn somewhere inside the coil it will definitely not produce a spark and will need to be replaced. This is not easily testable with simple test gear but if everything else in the ignition system is OK, then this will have to be the circumstantial diagnosis. For the techies the reason is that a shorted turn will destroy the inductance of the coil. Keep up the good work!

As a small engine mechanic i always find people dont question their invoice when they have a fully working clean machine. If you have to take covers or cowlins off machines its always worth cleaning them and blowing them off with compressed air then using duck oil or wd40 to make the machine look like its been worked on. I have never had any complaints about how my customers machines go back to them, in fact all of them say how their machine looks like new. then they pay their bill with a smile and word gets around.

You can also take a multimeter, put iton the continuity sector, put the red node in the spark plug cap & ground it.rhen turn the magnito across the coil and watch the reading. Should be above 10 volts. Mine runs for a few minutes rhen shuts down, but starts right back up and runs a minute. My coil drops below 8.50. coil is going out

I too found this video very informative and. . enjoyable. Making a video that branches both of these is far from easy. In order to keep the viewer's attention requires the ability to demonstrate knowledge along with a pleasant, down to earth attitude that keeps the viewer watching. Intrigued. I've worked on small engines for years and yet, I still find videos like these helpful and informative. Simple but effective. These lanyards aren't meant to pull your arm from your shoulder. If you're doing this on any two or four cycle engine, chances are the coil is the culprit. Well done, Kevin. I'll be watching more of your work.

I scratched my head for days with a similar problem on a mower, swapping good parts from another I had nearby before discovering the flywheel had a bad magnet. They do lose they're power (magnetism) from a number of ways, shock being one of them. I found a description that stated if it doesn't suck and hold a screwdriver from about a half inch away then replace flywheel which I did and it ran perfect. Tested it on both flywheels side by side and sure enough huge difference. Haven't experienced that with my small 2-strokes but in principle it should apply.

… One thing you may, or may not have noticed in this video, He should have checked to make sure the wire end made good connection, within the spark-plug wire, before buying a new coil. It doesn't take much to take the end off, cut it back by about a quarter of an inch (most wires allow that much removal), and re insert the spring wire pin, back into the spark-plug wire in a new fresh position. Most new spark plug wires have carbon fibers, instead of wire (like in the old days), and the pin that sticks into that fiber, may, or may not, be making a good connection, which could lead to no spark, or a far weaker spark than the plug should have, causing the engine not to fire, when enough good compression, and fuel is supplied. So, before you go out and pay $50 for a new coil, check the spark-plug wire, that fits and connects to the spark plug. Over time of removing, and reconnecting the plug wire, it's solid like connect, may not be so well connected, as you think it is. The pin can pull out of the spark plug wire completely, or partly, making the connection very poor or not at all. By doing this, you may save yourself a $50 pocket expense, and wait time for the new coil to arrive in the mail, or a miserable trip to the repair shop, for a new coil (which all come with a new spark plug, cup end already installed on it. Instead of the coil being at fault, it was the connection between the wire, and the spark plug end at fault. Hope this little extra tip saves you some time , and money, and gets your engine back up and running sooner. … another small tip; take time to make sure your exhaust port is open, and free of carbon build-up. It also can stop your engine from firing up, if you have spark.

My 225 Lite Husqvarna was a beast. When it quit, I checked spark, good, I checked compression, also good. I checked fuel, also good. Only thing left was the mixture of air and fuel, which will be known when I get done rebuilding the carb. I believe it's pulling air like a car with a vacuum leak. Good video for the DYI.

Excellent video, I'm starting to dabble with small 2-stroke engine repair, I've worked on 4 stroke from Briggs and Stratton, and have a college degree in engine building, done more work on bigger engines. I'm quickly starting to learn 2 strokers can be a little more complicated and some brands like to modify parts ever so slightly. Only thing I can say from my years of experience with car ignitions, you're right with the dish soap, I've used a dab of dielectric grease too, but I was taught to slide the wire into the boot first, connect your plug end, then slide the boot over your plug end, it's a lot easier than trying to cram the plug end in the backside of the boot

Thank you for the useful video which really shows how simple the ignition system is when you get down to it. There was no need to clean the pole pieces of the 'coil' (actually the stator of the magneto) and the rotating pole pieces as, although you said that they would make good contact, you then ensured, quite correctly, that there was a 10 thou gap. There was never going to be any contact anyway!

Great video. My Echo 225 trimmer had a WEAK spark and wouldn't run yesterday - changed plugs, blew out the wet cylinder with compressed air... nothing. Pulled the ignition module/coil and sanded down the 2 contact points that interact with the flywheel and then the magnets on the flywheel with 220 grit paper. .016" feeler gauge between the flywheel and ignition module and buttoned her back up. Good video Kevin. One thing you might want to try before condemning the coil is to clean the coil around the bolt holes where it mounts to the engine and the engine as well so you have a good continuous electrical ground path. It can become corroded at this location and cause the coil to fail to spark.

Nice clear video 2 things though put a piece of a4 sheet to get your gap . and get a multimeter to check your coil and spark plug .all easy fixes .Very good point about returning old spares that shows your honesty . After using your machine remove the filler cap and put an old thin plastic bag over the threads then replace filler cap ,this prevents any moisture getting into fuel in damp conditions or storing for a while.

Suggestion: Not sure cause I've never done it but the two pieces you put in the spark plugs end of the wire MAY (again I can't be certain) be easier to slip the cable through the rubber boot, connect the metal loop and pull/push it in place. Thanks, Enjoyed the video buddy.

Actually no contact is made between magnets and magneto coil, The coil works on magnetic induction. two coils inside coil housing, the primary, few hundred turns, secondary a few thousand turns very fine wire. possibly a condenser reaches a given voltage then discharges into the primary coil.
@deankay4434
@deankay4434 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, mutual induction creates the spark. The air gap is important but not cleaning with sandpaper. That type of plug connector is installed using dielectric grease and holding it with either “Duck-Bill” pliers or needle nose. A “Hog Ring” pliers with a 45 degree angle works great as they are rounded and don’t close all of the way. One end of the coils secondary is at ground, otherwise it is not a complete circuit. You will find most are the same resistance on a digital multi meter. Testing the plug wire to ground would answer that 3 minutes after no spark was confirmed. Use an ST125 (Spark Tester, #1, 25,000 volts) it comes with an alligator clip on the side to clip to ground. I started on lawnmowers, then motorcycles. After that, cars. Only motorcycles use CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) because they are more expensive. ASE Master Tech since 1978 - Retired

Fun thing I learned in the last week is all Echo coils have a lifetime warranty!!! If it’s in the first 2 years from DOM, totally free at your dealer. If not you will owe the half hour to the shop for time. Blower ones run around $74, shop time was $42, And instead of paying $74 for just the coil, I paid for them to install warranty part.

I do agree that it was way to much effort for that trimmer but 3 things first his video might help someone that can do the job theirself so no labor charge second he will get ad money from video 3rd this applies to all string trimmers and some commercial trimmers cost way more than 200 bucks and to add a forth thing lots of times you can find parts on ebay for pennies compared to a dealer so you might only be out 20 or 30 bucks. Their are the people with a lot of money that just toss it and don't bother we live in a toss it world sad but true and some people are just limited in what they can afford and a video like this just might get them out of a bind. So all of y'all taking the time to criticize his video wasted your time and did not accomplishe a thing besides losing time typing your useless opinion. Great video man always going to be haters.:-)

If you go ahead and insert the feeler guage into the gap at the center of the pick-ups, because the pick-ups are radiused, the width of the flat, relatively wide guage keeps the gap much larger than the thickness of the guage blade. From that, you can go ahead and see the blade must be inserted only a short way into an edge of the gap, to be able to set the clearance at the correct distance.

4 things needed, proper air&fuel mixture/ compression/ good spark/ proper timing.
@charleseck3941
@charleseck3941 3 жыл бұрын
The timing is dictated by when the flywheel magnets pass beneath the coil. Unless the flywheel key is sheared (easy to check by looking at the key in the shaft), then the timing is not an issue with this engine.
