Great tip. I ran into an engine, 8.75 series briggs on a toro timemaster, with such a blown head gasket, the oil got around the head bolts, and the head, and the gasket, it isolated the head from the block, and took the ground away, the spark plug would spark against the block, but not screwed into the head, a real head scratcher for sure.

I've used the gas cap trick before. Neighbor had his tractor quit on him in the middle of mowing. I pulled the cap, found the vent hole crusted over with dirt. I grabbed a drill bit that was a size or two bigger than the factory hole in the cap, and twisted it in with my fingers, effectively enlarging the hole. Tractor ran great then, and the neighbor treated me like I was a genius after that!

Everything you said on here yes. But you pull the recoil cover off and see all that rust on the flywheel you have to clean off the flywheel and take the coil off and clean it and where it mounts at also if no spark then replace the coil all these years I been working on them 60 % of the time that's what it was rust on every thing. I been doing this for 45 years now fixing to retire from small engine repair.

@waynestefinashen239 Жыл бұрын
Excellent video on easy testing but do not throw out that coil yet especially if it has a spark plug boot like the Honda one in the video or those that are metal shielded because they have a built in resistor that may fail. I believe these style spark plug boots are supposed to have 5K ohms resistance. On three cases over 9 years we have found them to have 10K+ ohms resistance which created the no spark issue. A simple spark plug boot replacement and away we go, great spark at a cheap part cost vs replacing the entire coil.

The presence or absence of spark is not always 100% for diagnosis ...example, a coil may be good enough to produce spark when cold but when engine heats up and coil heats up it may not. I saw this recently on a mower. Just seeing the spark on a cold coil is not always conclusive.

Hey T-Bone, I have a Hustler zero turn. I have no spark when checking the spark plug while connected to the wire, when I disconnect the kill wire, I get spark. When I do the screwdriver trick I get spark with or without the kill wire attached and the motor will fire both ways. My issue is the motor will run for 15-20 minutes and will die. I have to wait for an hour before it will start again. Any ideas?

Keep the terms straight. An ignition module contains a MOSFET which is a high current transistor that fires the spark plug like points once did. It doesn't contain the ignition coil. Both systems use a coil.

I have an old Solo (1975) chainsaw. It has points and no spark. I checked it out and the coil seems to be grounding out the points. With the coil mounted I have continuity on both sides of the points with the points open. I isolated the switch and it's working. I think the coil is shorted to ground, because when I remove the coil and then check the points they work fine and then put it on again, the points are grounded again. Am I missing something, or is my coil bad?

My friend dropped off his Dr brush mower it's got a 13 horsepower Intex single cylinder I've clean carburetors my whole life I've worked on this before for 5 years anyways he says you know it won't start cleaning the carburetor put it back on put a new spark plug in the rc12yc. I can get it running 5 seconds 6 seconds shuts off I got a spark plug tester initially I didn't see any spark I move the wire on the coil itself and now I got spark running into the spark plug tester and the engine runs for 20 seconds sometimes and then it dies I see spark the whole time and it dies. I know you're going to say well dummy it's got to be the wire going into the coils because if initially you didn't see spark and then you did that must be the problem. When it's running I see the spark light up the tester the whole time and it dies...so my prob is???
@RaleysSmallEngines8 ай бұрын
1st remove air cleaner. Run it until it dies and won't start. Shoot flammable brake cleaner into carb. Will it start? If so fuel issue if not fire issue.
@Abc-kn5wj8 ай бұрын
Gas is not an issue carburetor spotless.
@Mrs.T-bone7 ай бұрын
What about before the carb? Fuel line, fuel filter, fuel pump, trash in tank, fuel tank lid issues. If it's not a fire issue and the carb is clean work back from there.
