I moved to a new house and needed to get my wood shop set up. I knew I needed more floor space so decided to build a 12x24 foot shed. I did the math and discovered I can save many thousand dollars by doing it myself. I designed it all on sketch up and the plans are available in the link below. I also bought some new tools for this project that worked out great! The Wen Track saw and Wen Roofing nailer were awesome! Not to mention the most cost effective option on amazon. Links are below.

This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things kzbin.infoUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.

Here is a little tip. When you make the framing for the floor. Get some cheap, The cheaper the better, Powered Detergent mix it up thick like it is paint. Paint the frame with it. It makes it termite proof, and rot resistant, Plus the shed will smell good. Good job thanks.

Quick question. I know 1/3 is a gym - do you have any issues with the foundation support? I ask because if I do a clean or snatch and fail, I don’t want it to blow through the floor. So thought I needed a cement pad instead of temporary foundation. Also, did you just use pavers for the foundation? Wondering what that is, the deck supports are like $10 a piece so was thinking I might need to get creative.
@KeimpieceCarpentry
@KeimpieceCarpentry Жыл бұрын
Hey Brittney, I'll do deadlifts up to 225 inside and theres no issues....so far. But I poured a concrete pad outside so if I'm doing really heavy stuff I do it out there on that but honestly I don't do super heavy shit and I don't have bumper plates so I don't ever drop shit or let it slam. I certainly wouldn't drop 225 onto the plywood floor.

First I want to say the shed looks great but a couple things to think about. The window headers should be turned wide side up and down, they are stronger that way. Second, the drip edge should have went under the drip edge. Water will get under the shingles and then find its way under the drip edge causing the fascia to rot.

@@timpalmer-logstolumber1999 that's not always the case. Read your building code for the state you are in. Here in Florida it is approved both ways under and over. 99% of roofers in FL nail there eave metal after the underlayment is installed.

You really did make it look easy, but I know different since I am not a carpenter. However, I do want one of these shed's and was making up some plans to submit to the county for a permit. I'm a tall guy so the inside ceiling needs to be over 6'6" so I don't have to bend over with my bad neck. I was having trouble with the floor system and seen this video and you solved the problem I was having, so I bought your plans and now all of my designs are out the window. I'm going to use yours and will change them as I need. I was wondering if you had any Google Sketch files I could get off you for this 12x24 shed plans? I could then change that and submit the outline to county when I pull the permit. Thanks.

Looking back do you wish you would have poured a concrete slab or is doing it this way with the blocks and gravel holding up well? Any reason you preferred this way? Thank you for your insight!
@KeimpieceCarpentry
@KeimpieceCarpentry 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and the question. Pouring a concrete slab is the best long term option, it would also likely double your construction cost. This isn't my forever house so I didn't want to do anything that permanent, I also didn't want to spend that much money. The way I did it with the blocks was the easiest and cheapest. Looking back I wish I would have done something a little more robust, perhaps some poured concrete footers. So far after a few years, everything seems to be holding up just fine. I do wish I made it a little higher though, on the south side, the siding is dang near touching the grass, so I'm sure its absorbing moisture and that will increase the rot rate of the wood. But so far everything is holding up.

I would of laid down concrete that craw space looking frame you built is gonna rot warp over time and then floor is gonna cave in. Cheaply made. I suggest a solid foundation with bolts in concrete. Pre drill holes in frame to be perfectly lined up or use steal beam then build off of it. But this video hear is a guy who wants it to get blown by tornado

No doubt a concrete slab foundation and "steel" beam construction would make a more durable shed. However it would also triple my cost. It is a shed, not a house. If this shed was to get destroyed by a hurricane, my house would also be destroyed, so I wouldn't be very concerned about the shed. The shed would also be destroyed if it had a concrete foundation.

Oh man I didn't even notice that when I first watched it. That's a big no no . You must stagger everything when you build,it makes it stronger and won't pop up at the seams. You have to do it in block,brick, plywood subfloor and sheathing, drywall, finish floor,roof , even the sod is staggered. You don't have to go 50% but you must stagger 33% min . If that had been in a house, the finish floor would be popping up , swelling, peaking etc.. Never build with 't' seams , always only 'T'

Hey, I'm considering something similar. Do you think 12x24 is large enough footprint for a wood working shop? Would it be limiting? I have a lot of space in my property, but I'm worried that building bigger than 12x24 on my own might be too big of a job.
@KeimpieceCarpentry
@KeimpieceCarpentry 2 жыл бұрын
It all depends what type of projects you do. If its just for a hobby I think 12x24 if fine, it's similar to a 1 car garage. If you intend to make money wood working then you'll def want to go bigger. 2/3 of my shed is for my cnc, laser, and wood storage. The back 1/3 is a gym. I have my 2 car garage as my primary wood shop. There are some creative things you can do though if you decided to do it yourself and stick with a 12x24. For example, you could build a big hard cover overhang on one side that you use for wood storage so it's not taking up floor space inside. Not sure what your climate is like. You could also have a large concrete pad built so as you use your tools you just roll them out from inside the shed to the concrete pad to use them like your table saw, planer, jointer, bandsaw etc.

From the cheap seats: the floor panels should’ve been staggered so not to land on the same floor joist and a longer level would’ve been more accurate than a torpedo on those wall studs. The sheathing looks like LP Smartside panel siding which requires a house wrap behind plus 6” ground clearance and the bottom edge must be painted, according to their instructions. Ridge venting alongside a gable vent...you may want to Google to see the problem with that. Most residential sheds greater than 200 square feet require a building permit, which isn’t to say a permit isn’t required for sheds under 200 Sq Ft since then a zoning permit is required to verify setback compliance. The difference is in the foundation requirements, which in my area is a 42 inch footing for sheds like yours. Another consideration often overlooked is RADON, which even I disregarded until I discovered that it indeed does cause cancer. With your structure so low to the ground, it may not have a natural way to vent out and may find a way to accumulate inside the shed, plus rising ground moisture has to vent as well. I hope you’re considering screening the perimeter to keep the rodents out.
@KeimpieceCarpentry
@KeimpieceCarpentry 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve great comments. I'll try to address each. 1. Staggering floor panels .... yes you're 100% right, that was my original plan but ass I was hauling those 3/4 sheets I said F it and just threw them down. 2. Longer level = more accurate . . . yes you're 100% right. I just didn't care enough to spend the money on a larger level. 3. Panels requiring house wrap and ground clearance . . . you're likely correct, but it's a shed and those things don't matter to me. 4. Ridge vent and gable vent . . . I have done the research, there is not issue with my specific use case. I have a cnc and laser running inside that half, so I have an exhaust fan hooked up on the back side of the gable vent to assist in pulling out dust and smoke from the cnc and laser. I do not have a gable vent on the back side which is a gym. The soffits will be vented providing circulation up through the ridge vent. Plus it's not like it's an attic in a house, it's a shed, it's all open so I wasn't too worried, I just want to keep the humidity as low as I can but NC summers will probably make my effort futile. 5. Permits. . . my county required a permit for sheds over 12 ft. I did go through the proper permit process for this build and everything was approved. They made me do a double bottom plate, I originally didn't plan on that. 6. RADON . . . . you're prob right, but it's a shed and I don't care. 7. Rodent screen . . . . yes you're right, I should get around to that but my back yard is fenced in and I'm sure you noticed my Chesapeake Bay Retriever that didn't leave my side during the build, I'm sure she would love if a rodent tried to make a home under the shed. All great points that people should think about if they're building a large shed like this. Thanks for taking the time to lay everything out, hopefully some people read it and utilize your recommendations.

Doubt the latter but still and could you like stagger the horizontal boards? Just enough to be able to shoot completely and correctly into both sides of the board?
