Hi instructor, I'm taking a building code course in British Columbia and your video helps greatly. Can you give me some hints on the following question? "what is the minimum required footing width for an interior non load bearing masonry wall that extends from the basement floor to the second floor ceiling (6900mm high)? " The question itself is similar to your example in the video except I got this floor ceiling of 6900mm. Although our codes may differ could you please offer me some help? My actual course instructor is not responding my email for weeks. Thank you !

Look at table 9.15.3.4 in the National Building Code.

@@buildingreno I did. In fact in 9.15.3.6.(2) it says "Footings for interior non-loadbearing masonry walls shall be not less than 200mm wide for walls up to 5.5m high and width shall be increased by 100mm for each additional 2.7m of height." the sentence fits the question that i'm trying to answer; however, the figures 6900mm and 2.7m height is really throwing me around, I don't know how both figures relate to each other. Help! Thank you.

So, a 5500mm (5.5m) wall needs a 200mm wide footing. Your question asks what if the wall was 6900mm (6.9m) tall? 5500mm+ 2700mm = 8200mm....your question wall is bigger than the base of 5500mm....and not over 8200mm...so add 100mm to the footing. Therefore 300mm. Please know, I'm out camping without a code book so take my advise with a grain of salt.

Hi there instructor, would you happen to know which part of the code book mentions about the requirement for glazing of the window that is located within a shower or bathtub enclosure? Thank you.

You won't find any information on shower enclosure in the code. Unless it is a barrier free washroom. Then there will be required demensions.

Good Class! for your students however experience is a good teacher as well, draw a 9'' wall with a footing one and a half times the thickness of the wall is 13& one half inches. to figure out the width of the footing draw a 45 degree angle from both of the bottom corners of the wall where it stops that's your width of footing Now draw an arrow in the center of the wall pointing down this represents the load then draw 4 arrows under the footing pointing up this represents expansive soil draw a jagged line alone the 45 degree line till it stops at the bottom corner this is where it will crack, if a footing is not wide enough it will crack under the wall and become an expensive fix. your students should also know the maximum length of the block wall before it needs an abutment support for the soil pressing against the wall
