Hey Mike, Love the videos. Is there a jigging rod that is comparable to the ones you have in this video? Or specs that I should look out for? Trying to convince my dad into the whole flutter spoon technique, but haven’t had much luck yet. Tight lines!
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Жыл бұрын
Thanks Sean! We use my signature jigging rods that you can get from Rich Coulson. His email is in the description. They are super high end and specifically made for jigging these spoons. If they are out of your price range, any slow pitch jigging rod will work well. You want short and limber. 6’6”. Very light power rating and longer butt section. If you need something very affordable a short light ugly Stik will work ok. Not great, but absolutely doable. 👍👍

Once upon a time we (middle TN, J. Percy Priest Lake) had big stripe. We've always called 'em Rockfish here and we had big Hybrid stripe as well. Priest is the Stones River impounded in 1968. Man, I love the way y'all just crush fish and all start laughing and feeling good when hooked up, crazy fun, I love it! Kudos to you with your way of explaining fishing stuff and things, I get it and you're helping us out by sharing, appreciate. As a tribute to Priest, have an intro with the Hellion going straight into the Electric Eye put in a video while you speed graphing, that would rock!
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Жыл бұрын
Thanks Jack!!! That means so much coming from Old Salts like yourself. It’s a big reason we are called Team Old School. We believe in the older ways, when dignity, honor and respect were THE most important things. I won’t be able to use a Priest tune in a full length video, but for you, I will make a SHORT with that music. What point of the songs do you want me to use from this link kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZnZq4B9ed-nbZI

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Right on Mike, funny the full time of the video link is 4:20, ha! It's all so good ya hate to cut any of it, but a short is a short, right. I believe any true Priest fan would agree, but the beginning of the Hellion, 15-20 seconds would be cool...or surprise. Guarantee it'll be appreciated! I ordered some OS Copper spoons, gonna give 'em a good try soon as they come in. I see bearing swivel modifications coming soon to my spoons, nice!

Thanks brother!!! Rich’s info is in the description. He’s the best. I fall back on ABU Beast Baitcasters in TORO size and regular size. Regular beast for plastics and TORO Beast for plugs. I’ve also been experimenting with the Shimano DC reels for very light plastics. They have digital braking systems in them that are very aggressive. So far I like them but they don’t hold much line. I’ll probably stay with ABU Beast. 👍👍

So in freshwater here in Texas, with surface temp over 80 degrees will they be deeper than 30 feet?
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Жыл бұрын
They will usually be IN and slightly ABOVE the thermocline. Every lake is different, 25-35 ft is a great place to start. If you’re using live Herring or Shad you’ll know when you’re too deep if the bait keeps dying fast. There is very little dissolved oxygen below the thermocline.

Any preference to using casting vs spinning rods? Also, I love your blue framed Oakley's! Where did you get them?
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Жыл бұрын
Thanks brother!! They are Oakley Racing Jackets. I personally prefer baitcasters because I can cast 50lb braid further than a spinning reel can cast 30. I can also stay in touch with my bait much better where as spinners go full slack when dropping or casting.

Season striper catcher,watching you grab that fish carefully knowing the second you touch it is going to twist and try to take the thumb off
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Жыл бұрын
Thanks Glenn. Good eye. You’re a salty dog so you know. I’ve had lots of young people struggle with that. Dropping fish on the deck and taking 5 or 6 try’s at the waters edge before they get it under control. I taught my sons to take an extra second to decide when to go for it. Then GO HARD AND WITH CONFIDENCE. Squeeze super hard and wait a few seconds before lifting and never relax until she’s wet again. My biggest annoyance is when a guy holds the net in front of a fish and doesn’t SCOOP. They see the fish swimming and assume it’s gonna KEEP swimming into the net if they drop it in front of the fish. 😂. They almost always try to turn when they see the net. I’ve seen the same guy do it 10 straight times, and then drop 10 straight fish on the deck when they relax their grip. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️. You don’t see those guys in my videos anymore. 😂

Thanks Danny! I appreciate the support!!! Team old school Copper and smoked chrome are great for every water clarity, stained or clear. in cleaner water brighter patterns like chartreuse and chrome can be bad news. So copper and smoked are best in clear water, but also catch fish in mud. Chartreuse and chrome are great in stained water, and can often out fish copper and smoked when fishing the mud. Hope that makes sense 😆 Stained water- bright patterns (chartreuse, chrome silver) are a 10. Copper and smoked are a 7. Clear water - copper and smoked chrome are a 10, chartreuse and silver are a 2.
