You could have used a dremel to cut a slot in the screw.. and the motherboard

True, but then I would need to get a dremel (which I don't have). Not to mention that you gotta take precautions with the dremel to ensure that metal shavings don't end up inside the device. The pliers ended up being the cleaner and more accessible option for me.

It depends on where the SSD screw is located as well as the screw's size, but (generally speaking) it should work with a stropped m2 SSD screw.
