I don't have any of those but I need the Carlyle CHT WSCCP now 😎 I have the Southwire S5N1 (5-In-1 Multi-Tool Pliers). They are great, thin profile tips but with large aggressive round gripping teeth so a full pliers head really. The cutter is large and works awesome and the crimper is on the back side close to the pivot point so crimping is effortless with that leverage. It reams and has comfort grips.

My #1 is the Klein J207-8CR "All-Purpose" pliers; needle-nose, strippers, cutter, crimper. * I have those KNIPEX; (impulse buy while at the Electrical Supply house), but, for the reason you stated, they got put in my electrical toolbag at the house because the crimper isn't suited to HVAC work. They really shine if you're doing 12-14ga romex, electrical boxes, and EMT. * I have the green-handled Snap-On version of those Carlyle crimpers; they're really nice, but aren't needle-nose - so they've been banished to my automotive tool box (where, as you mentioned, they're starting to get surface rust because of that shinier finish on the stieel). I forget exactly how expensive they were, bought them on eBay. * Those Klein 2005N stripper/crimpers are nice....but, again, lack the needle-nose - so the 'All Purpose Plier' wins again.

I wish channel lock came out with a stripper crimper combo. I like the channel locks better than the kleins cause I crimp a lot of insulated spade terminals and you dont have to open the tool up all the way to get in there cause channel locks is on the top instead of the bottom like klein

Very good point. And that's the kind of stuff I was hoping to see in the comments. That kind of stuff helps other guys choose the correct tool for them. I actually meant to mention that in the video but forgot. I do like the idea of putting the insulated crimp on top, furthest away from the rivet. 😎👍
@throttlebottle59063 жыл бұрын
one thing to note is the difference in strippers for solid wiring vs. stranded. like the kleins only list the wire gauge for stranded(STR). that model knipex appears to be labeled for solid wire(didn't look it up, maybe not) but the difference is usually one gauge size off. examples, stripper for 10awg solid = 12awg stranded wire and stripper for 14awg solid wire = 16awg stranded! if you don't pay attention and use stripper solid wire marking on stranded, it deeply nicks all of the outer strands and causes them to break off very easily, which makes a weak point when terminating(crimp/solder/lug/wire cap) make no difference.
@throttlebottle59063 жыл бұрын
ok, I couldn't resist temptation. the knipex stripper holes are labeled for solid wire, with stranded(STRD) it's 14 and 16awg! knipex-tools.com/index.php?id=1023&page=art_detail&parentID=&groupID=2216&artID=34120

Carlyle has a nice multi tool with a very thin needle nose that I like for control work.- model CHT WSCCPLN, but they have gotten ridiculously priced for a Taiwan-made tool. They were $30 just a few years ago. Also, NAPA will not exchange a defective tool without a receipt, so I'm not sure I will continue to buy from them. Snap on 29ACF are also a solid choice, with insulated crimpers closer to the end of the tool but expensive. If you get bored sometimes test the quality of your crimps with some weight. UL486A standards are strength pull test of 70lbs for #12, 50lbs for #14, 30lbs for #16, and 20 lbs for #18.

Generator and hvac tech with an automotive background. Basically a maintenance repair douche. The crimper portion of those Klein’s sucks. The little snap ons (same size as the Carlyle) have more leverage for crimper. The Klein’s crimper head isn’t the same as the OG Maroon crimper. The cable cutter portion of the Klein’s below the rivet fold over on fine stranded wire. I was very disappointed in them. Maybe my set was just a dud. I wish knipex offered more wire sizes for the stripper portion. Not all of us in the sparky field use cutters and strippers for romex. I also wish knipex would make a 10-12” pair of cable shears like Klein does. The cable cutters Knipex makes are a stepped design and do not work well with double insulated SO cables. My gotos are the snap on shortys. 4-5 pairs between the service tuck, work, veto tech pack, home, etc. or the OG Klein dedicated crimper. OTC and cornwell also make a 90 degree head version of the snap ons/Carlyle that make awesome crimps in tight spots. I like the wide nose forged Klein stripper combos but the leverage point for the crimper makes it difficult for proper crimps.

So you're 100% sure that the Carlyle unit is made in the USA?? With USA steel? Snap On has to meet government "mil spec" quality control that Carlyle doesn't. Maybe the Carlyles are Snappy rejects and rebranded. I don't know. For the average homeowner and occasional HVAC dabbler, the Carlyles might be fine, but a pro mechanic can write off the Snappy and Klein additional costs on their taxes and the homeowner can't. IF a reject fails the homeowner, he or she has to take time out of their free time to go get it replaced. IF a pro has a tool fail, it's costing them money to go chase replacement parts and tools when they should be finishing up a job. I've pretty much lived by that old slogan, "Buy The Best and only cry once.". I do like your detail in this video and I'll be looking for a pair of the Kleins at the next few flea markets and yard sales I attend.
@sknight0391 Жыл бұрын
I don't believe I remember saying the Carlyle were made in the USA. They're actually made in Taiwan. Which is slightly better than China product. They are actually very good quality and also come with a lifetime warranty through NAPA auto parts. You can go into any of their stores and exchange them if they ever break or tear up on you. Thanks for watching 😎👍
