I'm a woodworker and never knew of this. That's pretty neat. Wonder what would happen now if you used oxalic acid or bleach to further lighten it.
@bluecurlygirl
@bluecurlygirl 2 жыл бұрын
Would you put oxalic acid into your oven while the oven cleaner is on it? I doubt it would have a good reaction. Being a woodworker you must also be aware of how absorbent wood is. Can you just imagine the effect that oven cleaner will have that has penetrated deep within the grain and doesn't get washed off? Can you imagine how toxic that would be inside someone's lovely warm home?
@Mr_Rick
@Mr_Rick 2 жыл бұрын
@@bluecurlygirl she rinsed it off. Oxalic acid is washed off with no problem to environment. You could neutralize before with a baking soda application if you're so concerned.

You missed some steps. What did you do after it sat in the sun? Did you use the oven cleaner twice? Did you topcoat it? You never showed or mentioned what you did.
@BeautyWithinHome

I didn’t do anything else after that actually. This piece didn’t require me to do the process more than once. Also, I didn’t use a top coat on this piece. You certainly can seal it if you want but I didn’t. Let me know if you have any other questions

Did you end up sealing the wood with anything?
@BeautyWithinHome
@BeautyWithinHome 10 ай бұрын
I used a matte polyurethane to seal it. I do not like to see any shine on my pieces. So you can use satin if you prefer.

Turned out nice but missing the transition from removing finish and the final beautiful piece. What was used as new color/varnish? How did you prep the remaining original stain. Seems like two videos spliced together switching to hardware. But looks great.
@BeautyWithinHome
@BeautyWithinHome Жыл бұрын
Hi Kelly! These are the complete steps I took. I didn’t do anything else… I didn’t use a new stain color or varnish on the piece. This is the raw wood that came through after the easy off. I didn’t have any remaining stain on the piece. It all came off with just the process showed in the video. I do think if you are doing a dining table or nightstand you should put a top coat on. I personally would do a flat or matte to protect it. If you have any other questions just let me know 😁

Amazing! Do you know if the sun has anything to do with the final outcome? I ask because I live where there are 4 seasons and these are projects I often do in the winter in my workshop in the basement. I have a very good ventilation system there for when I have to solder stained-glass, etc. I also use a dehumidifier, but wonder if that should be on or off, if it would dry the wood too quickly or if it matters. I can see several long put-off projects occupying my time this winter! One more question! Would this work to help remove some extremely stubborn spots of old varnish on these old hardwood floors? I have been TRYING to get the last of it off for months! Even the sander is taking forever, and with several dogs, I'm not real keen on kicking up that much dust, not being sure what that old finish has in it. I only know that stuff was meant to NEVER have to be redone, lol.

OK, a couple of things. First of all, you should have removed the drawers then you should have dried off the piece before letting it dry in the sun. Water is not good for wood. Secondly, you sprayed heavy chemicals into this wood, and then a bunch of water, and it doesn’t look like you conditioned the wood afterward at all. You can’t just use bare wood in your house without putting something on it to protect it even if it’s just a light wax or a linseed oil. Pretty good job.

Thank you! ❤️ It is totally ok if you aren’t comfortable with it - I do get the concern. It sounded strange when I first heard it, but I tried it and it didn’t damage the piece. I love how it turned out but the process is not for everyone ❤️

I literally popped on here to say if anyone else is thinking of following this trend please DON'T. IT IS UNSAFE. Oven cleaner was NOT meant for use on wood/ply/laminate. That material will ABSORB IT. It will then continually omit DANGEROUS FUMES for an extended period of time inside someone's home. I don't know who started this trend but I really wish they hadn't. I've seen too many youtubers do it now and that is only encouraging others to do likewise.

The bottle literally says fume free. You’re also washing it off and letting it sit in the sun. It’s fine…

@@xxaubreyann It doesn't say chemical free and don't believe everything you read on a bottle. It's FAR from fine. Washing it off won't remove what has penetrated deep into the wood.

@Elmer Henry While I agree with being careful & doing some investigation- There are many many dangerous products that are regularly used in this type of Trade- arent there? Oven cleaners are much more tame since the newer ovens w better coatings.. Also someone may decide to sand doelwn a little as they may be planning on anyway- tgem sealing it -know he didnt here. May reduce any escape. Yes- if fyrniture strippers today are a great deal better- I wld think long term- it wld be better to consider whatever product is safer- esp @ sm. cost. Thanks for the info!
