Hey Free Range Cottage friends! Do you love the stripped wood look of a lot of designer (pricey) furniture?
I sure do. But of course there is that price!
I decided to try and DIY some stripped wood for myself. There are a couple of people on Instagram that I had seen doing it!

In this video, I'm showing you four projects that I "oven cleanered"! You have to watch to see if they were flips or fails!

Love the results of all your projects. My new fav thing is to strip off all the paint….that I painted on everything, just a few years ago 😂 I love so many styles and I enjoy change. I’m getting back into all kinds of unpainted wood again. I’m doing a lot of the raw wood, but I found sealers change the color slightly. However my local saw mill shared an amazing sealer that does not change the color of the wood at all. Most of the time I just leave raw wood raw except kitchen or bathroom counters. Love your videos. You’ve inspired me to leave some new trends behind and do more what I love. Not sure my hubby loves you as much as I do haha!
@FreeRangeCottage

Yes, I’ve definitely been leaning more to the raw wood vs painted! If you don’t mind sharing the name of the topcoat, I would love to check it out! I’m the same way as you are. I love a lot of styles and I like to change things up. My family just accepts it at this point. 😂I tell them it’s cheaper than therapy!

A paint scraper, rather than the water hose, would get that dissolved goop off more easily. Lye spray-on oven cleaner is a standard method during removal of build-up cooking gunk on cast iron pans. The lye breaks down the proteins and fats and whatever in the gunk. Never heard it used on paint etc. on furniture. The dresser turned out beautifully!

Thanks for the tutorial. I have a slightly more vibrant turq than you showed on the little chest on my circa 1960 front door, which I repainted to perfection in the 90s. Now it's scratched, peeling & just imperfect enough to look bad. I'd been considering doing a Dionne Woods' multi-color, blended drippy finish on it, but I may just do the oven cleaner, expose a bit of its natural pine & stabilize whatever crustyness remains with Delft low sheen clear coat. I can always do an adaptation of Dionne's style on top if I'm not satisfied with the 1st phase.

When you're using these lye based oven cleaners.... Always use gloves as this will harm your skin if you do get it on your skin do not use vinegar use water to rinse it off vinegar will actually burn worse than the lye. This method seems to work really well on removing old finish

Love this idea of using oven cleaner to do all in one steps...THANK YOU, I'm excited to try this! I see it's been a year since posting, have the pieces had any negative outcomes from using the water to clean off the paint and stains. I surely would rather hose everything off with water but concerned of warping or wood separation 🤔
@FreeRangeCottage
@FreeRangeCottage Жыл бұрын
No problems! I did it on a sunny day so that the piece could get very dry. If you have a power washer, it would be quicker to rinse so less moisture exposure.

Always a good day when I see a new video from you! What a fantastic method, I will definitely be trying this at some point. I’m off to thrift today 💕, and reminded of you mentioning that you had tried a booth at a flea market (or some other venue? Can’t quite remember), but it didn’t work for you. Do you sell at another place? I’d love a video on your experiences with any in-person sales you do, as I’m researching to try it next year. ❤️❤️❤️

Hi Kathy. I’ve had several Flea Market/Antique booths over the years. I’ve always made a decent profit. I did have a space this last year. I really love the shop that I was in. I was just so busy otherwise that I couldn’t keep up with it. Then it became a source of frustration! So I opted to close it down. Now we just sell on our Etsy. But I’m always considering my options because we love treasure hunting, but I certainly can’t keep it all AND I hate clutter! 😂 I have a past video with a few tips from my experience. I will definitely consider making another one in the future, if there is interest. Hope you find some great treasures today! 🤞
