Hi Bob, thanks for all of your content and videos, thanks to them I was able to successfully re-paste my asus zephyrus M15 with RTX 2070 Max q (used kingpin kpx for both the cpu and gpu instead of the factory liquid metal on the CPU) and I'm enjoying better thermals now than before. (Paricularly better on the GPU side with much more less thermal throttling, it's a very small and compact chasis...) Thanks once again and looking forward to more content from you!!!

So much goop!!! This is why I stick with thermal pads when I can. Less stuff to clean up. But that’s just personal preference. Really nice to see the thermal compounds and liquid metal they use is applied well. That’s a far cry from the good ol days where you HAD to repaste your laptop day one and get 5-10 degree drop. Nice undervolt too. 8 degrees is a massive gain.

I’m some instances, the reason why thermal pads are not used is because the tolerance is so small that even a .5 thermal pad may be too thick. But if you absolutely have to go that route then get the thinnest pads.

Bob, what was the fan noise like on balanced profile on the mech 15 g3, i only saw max fan at 52db, was it too loud for headphoneless gaming other than office mode? How was that 1440p screen in non gaming scenarios, was the text sharpness noticeable? I dont think i could run it at 100% scaling, probably 125-150%. I ask because im starting to do alot of text based work on the computer work doing programming. A high quality 17 inch 1080p FHD panel should be just as good and be ran at 100% scaling? I haven't been able to look at enough QHD or 4k screens even with scaling to compare. Do you know if windows 10 still suffers bad from scaling issues? its either that 15.6 inch mech 15 g3 1440p or MSI GE76 Raider 17.3 inch 1080p, Im trying to decide between these two machines.

I guess my comment got deleted because I put an external link in, but I don't know how to show you in i-m-g-u-r. But the computer turns on. I want to get it cleaned off but not sure, first, if I need to get the residue from underneath, and if so, how to access it to fully clean it properly.

Very interesting repaste video, considering OEMs and even high end boutique vendors are going for heterogeneous thermal interfaces, liquid metal on CPU and paste on GPU. I have never applied/reapplied liquid metal so here are my concerns: While repasting the GPU, can we leave the liquid metal as is on the heatsink and GPU die instead of removing it and cleaning the surfaces for reapply? or does removing the heatsink screw up the perfect contact and fitment needed for liquid metal to perform it's magic and are forced to reapply liquid metal every couple of years just to repaste the GPU? Knowing that liquid metal (LM) if left alone can easily last 5 to 7 years without degradation according to some users on notebookreview forums and my vendor HIDevolution told me LM is good for the life of the system I do not like this new approach one bit. Liquid metal is much more expensive, requires higher skill and patience to apply (risk of shorting MOBO) plus is not easy to find outside of Europe, USA and rich Asia (Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Japan, Australia). So when the thermal paste on the GPU eventually dries out and pushes out in 1 to 2 years (unless you use phobya nanogrease or IC diamond, 3/4 years), so the user needs to repaste the GPU but if he can't find liquid metal, can he just leave it on the heatsink and CPU die or will he have to remove the LM and downgrade to thermal paste? I mean I get it why they put paste on GPU and liquid metal on the CPU because the heat-pipes are shared they give the better thermal conductivity interface to the hotter CPU so they GPU runs warmer because exchanges less heat to not saturate the heatsink so much. But this is wasteful and super expensive when it comes to maintenance and reapply... I prefer Liquid Metal on both CPU and GPU as done on my laptop (can't be bothered with repastes) but the fact that recently, even high end boutique vendors are doing this heterogeneous approach to TIM is not to my liking one bit and they are charging the same price as they did for liquid metal on both CPU and GPU back in 2019-late 2020...
@BobOfAllTrades
@BobOfAllTrades 3 жыл бұрын
Once you break the LM seal you really should clean and redo it. The reason why LM isn’t on the GPU is because Nvidia won’t honor the warranty. Companies like HID eat it should the GPU fail.
@Frencho9
@Frencho9 3 жыл бұрын
@@BobOfAllTrades Well sheet... I got lucky to get a laptop before Nvidia pulled that warranty stunt on liquid metal. I don't plan to upgrade until 2023 (raptor/meteor lake or Zen 5/5+, RDNA 3 or Lovelace/Hopper) I hope it gets sorted out by then, or vendors at least use long lasting paste like phobia nanogrease and not Gelid or kryonaut.

@Frencho9 3 жыл бұрын
@@BobOfAllTrades Thanks for explanation, I really thought it was a cost saving/thermal optimization rational decision due to shared heatpipes. But turns out it's just Nvidia being ahole drama queen as usual. I mean, if CPU makers are cool with liquid metal when manufacturers like Asus or Playstation put the necesary safeguards like foam dams and kapton tape I don't see why Nvidia makes a fuss about that. If you can do it for a CPU SoC so can you for a GPU SoC. OEMs and vendors always getting the shaft with Nvidia, G-Sync certification fees on a per panel basis is another cutthroat thing they do. I wonder if AMD will greenlight liquid metal on their mobile dGPU if OEMs guarantee anti spill safeguards. Also I hope we get freesync on the AMD dGPU and not have to bypass via the vega iGPU like on ampere cards (again I suspect Nvidia not playing nice with AMD freesync just to push their G-sync). No wonder TSMC does not want to do business with them lol.

@BobOfAllTrades

Thermal pad replacement paste is different than cpu/gpu die paste. The surface material, viscosity and temp requirements are different. Should you use cpu/gpu paste everywhere, you could be slowly frying your surrounding components without knowing it since most is not read by sensors.

Hi, if you want you can also use the same thermal paste for the components like pasting the gpu. K-5 Pro, like mentioned in the video, is in my opinion the best for components. @@Kirschbluteee It’s risky, but thinner would likely be your best bet since paste was used. If it’s too thick you’ll have poor CPU/GPU contact and you’ll notice this quickly. If it’s too thin you won’t notice it right away, if at all. It’ll either throttle and you won’t know why or you’ll burn something out. I’d source something appropriate even if it’s a K5 substitute.
