But the very initial sound is that of letting air out of a balloon while squeezing the opening.

Some sound like helicopters, true strobe rocket propellant, used in the ones with a slower strobe pulse rate. The secret of adjusting the scintillation (strobe rate) is in the mesh size of Magnalium metal powder fuel used in the formula. If you use finer Magnal, (-325 mesh) the strobe will be that of a Harley Davidson motorcycle or A-10 Warthog. If you use a little bit coarser grain size (-200 mesh) then you will have a more balanced strobe rate with more powerful “pops” than the strobe used in the rockets you see here, since Cody’s friend who built these might not have had -200 mesh Mg+Al on hand, or preferences the faster-paced strobe effect… Knowing this, you can literally obtain whatever pulse rate you think sounds best, by tuning the ratios of mesh sizes until balance is achieved. Honestly, Strobe Rockets are as complicated as they are amazing!
