Lomma, located in Skåne County, Sweden, is a town rich in history and natural beauty. First documented in 1085 as Lumaby, Lomma was a significant port for customs, shipping, and trade, leveraging its strategic position at the mouth of the river Höje å. This river served as a crucial transport link to major centers like Lund and Dalby.
In the 19th century, Lomma saw industrial growth with the establishment of a large brickworks by Frans Henrik Kockum in 1854 and the founding of Skånska Cement AB in 1871, which began producing Portland cement. This industrial development bolstered the town's economy and led to the expansion of its harbor. However, the town also faced challenges, such as the closure of the asbestos cement factory in 1977 due to health risks associated with asbestos exposure.
A notable historical landmark in Lomma is Alnarp Castle. Originally built in the 12th century, the castle was reconstructed in French Renaissance style in the 19th century. It now houses the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and features a park with one of Sweden's most diverse tree collections, accessible to the public year-round. Another significant site is Borgeby Castle, which dates back to the 1100s and has been home to various noble families. Today, it hosts a museum showcasing the works of artist Ernst Nordlind.
Lomma Beach is a key attraction, known for its pristine sandy shores and clear waters.
