Strolling Through Lagos' Brazilian Quarter

They were called Aguda, the Africans who had returned to their homeland from Brazil after the abolition of slave trade in the nineteenth century. Many of them settled in Lagos. Their heritage is still visible today. Go on a tour of Lagos' Brazilian Quarter with President Graciano Martins of the Brazilian Descendant's Association.

Things are shifting all over the world extremely fast. We NEED videos like this of our Elders passing information and telling us the truths about history and events. Too many things still are being whitewashed, distorted, or just removed entirely. It's cool to hear all the knowledge. For me, the religion part isn't relevant due to it being used to divide, oppress, and mislead people, but it's still knowledge of events. Conversely, knowing our connection and ties to each other is extremely important.

This takes way back! Most of the places touched here were my playground. Although my school was in Surulere many of my school mates had surnames like Cardoso, Pereira, Costs etc. As kids we were aware of great grandparents who returned from 'yonder' but never ever dwelled on the subject. We all spoke Yoruba though mine is slightly fading now. I still remember the Eyor Festival. Need to return too, I'm getting old.

Nice video. My friend who also lives in Brazil sent it to me. I'm a Nigerian currently living in Brazil. It's insightful to learn about this history. We still have relics of the cultures and traditions of Africans in Brazil, they are pronounced in some cities than others. Unfortunately, this set of indigenous Brazilians are not accorded the respect they deserves, even in their country, Brazil. Let's all go back to our root, Let's go back home. I just subscribed.

because they truly own the land. the returned slaves were settled there freely because they were yoruba descendants who were free from slave trade. They have a court ruling to the ownership of the land presided over in london and verdict given since 1920. The problem is many of these families (not all) lived an elitist life. Even though they dont exactly belong to that land, the locals took them in. Still, they repaid the Yorubas with treachery that culminated in some recolonization, like what we saw in Liberian and Sierra Leone. So when the Yorubas of then through Awolowo consolidated power, the Saros (as they are locally known) got relegated to the background. Their lack of good rapport with Yoruba people also ensures their grandkids inherit their parents' hate and elitist tendencies.

Am proud that our true Lagosians are now coming out to show awon Ara Oke Ajesin who are lying about their identities. We also have the Sierra Leonards, The Fanties, The Badagry, The Aworis, The Ikorudu Epe.and Nupe Tapa. Those are the early settlers of Lagos. Stop the segregation. Majority of Brazilian and Cuban returnees are yoruba hinterland people before the journey of no return to American. That's why they can come back to settle in lagos after slave trade abolishment. The language and yoruba tradition been practiced was the evidence. More also They are few igbos and delta who settle in lagos among the returnees as well. Study yoruba's history. The allen family trace their ancestry origins back to Ibadan, the alakija trace their to abeokuta. You are naive. Do you know the reason why the nupe or tapa as yoruba called them are settlers in lagos? Its was because of war between Ibadan and ekiti and ijesha combined. The Waterloo war of 1789 the yoruba's fought within themselves for 400 years. The trouble is spreading towards lagos that's why they decided to call for nupe warrior as a guard to defend the yoruba's in lagos at ido. Because the ijesha are the one who is selling a large size of cocoa to British in order to protect the English interest in lagos and when the war was going on the British supply them guns to fight Ibadan that was how the war was lasted for 400 years.

Aren’t the Saros also settlers?? There are Saros in Sierra Leone & other parts of the South West, so what is the difference between a Da Silva and an Egba family that has been in Lagos for 9 generations? Those from Isale-eko, Ikorodu & Epe could also claim that they are the “true Lagosians”. I definitely agree that the Thiefnubus are the worst of us & have no place in our politics, but let’s not forget that even the Saros were once immigrants, so what makes them the “true Lagosians”.
