Have to admit, the absolute last person you want around in this situation (and even more so in an actual emergency) is someone who over-emotes; typically women, but not always will sometimes just scream or go into panic mode, even when the emergency is happening to someone else (and they’re not in danger). It’s annoying when it happens with car accidents and, say, downed power lines, but it’s genuinely dangerous when it happens in high-stakes emergencies. Hurricanes, for example; it puts people in danger if there’s someone sitting in their car at an intersection screaming and panicking, as everyone else on the road is trying to evacuate. I watched a video of a mountain climber, whose team was struck by an avalanche. This was supposed to be a seasoned climber who understood the risks, and was trained/prepared for the likely event that someone on her team, at some point during her climbing career, would be seriously injured or killed. And yet, when disaster struck, she didn’t rush to help or logically work through what to do next. She stood there and screamed at nobody in particular, stuck in the panic that tends to get people killed in that situation. All of that said, I completely understand this man’s comment. There’s no benefit to getting worked up about it; you can flee, leap in to help, or stay put, and in their case the latter was their only real option.

@@robertc.5558 I understand the extra precaution but when power lines poles are falling and the wind is just chucking things, how much can you really avoid? It can possibly occur on their side of the road, those poles are so big that every lane was covered on the other side. Looks like both sides had the same lane space, the lane next to the divider was literally the best option for that unpredictable weather outside of actually just getting off the road.

This is him saying, I am aware of the problem, but focusing directly on it will not lead to a solution. I will focus on what I can control, rather than what I can't. It's perfectly reasonable to have a verbal confirmation that everyone recognizes the immediate danger, and then to shift focus away from it to actual solutions. A+ marks to everyone.

Public safety reminder: if power lines land on your car put it in park, turn off the engine, and remain in the vehicle. Avoid touching metal surfaces. Call 911 and wait for emergency crews to turn off the power and Remove the lines from your vehicle. In modern grid systems the power will try to close the circuit three times after detecting a fault so just because it stopped arcing (the pretty white/blue light) doesn't mean it won't reenergize in a few seconds.

@@VjReedus fair point. i will agree with you on that one, but still those are men that are reckless, and stupid. there are some guys who actually care about people's safety, do not compare those guys to us men. like i said, not all men are 'reckless'. i guess it just depends on who is behind the wheel and what their backstory is, but i have no explanation for your response. it's basically hit or miss with these type of situations.

I work at a power utility. NEVER under ANY circumstances get out of the car if you are ever in this situation unless being in the car poses an immediate threat to your life. Fuses are supposed to blow to kill the line if it goes down, but there is no guarantee that the line is dead until the electric company can open the nearest disconnect. Your car acts as a Faraday cage in this situation and all of the electrical current will run through the metal body of your car to ground, so you are safe in the car, but the ground near the line could still be energized which can result in something called a “step potential” which basically means there is voltage between your feet when you take a step, so DO NOT exit the vehicle. If it is a dire emergency and being in the car poses a direct threat to life and limb, JUMP out of the car making sure you don’t touch the metal bodywork and keeping your feet together, and hop on your toes away from where the power line is. You will look like an idiot, but it is better to look like an idiot and stay alive than to actually _be_ an idiot and get fried by a step potential from a downed power line.

If powerlines go down anywhere around you, do NOT get out of your car especially if the ground is wet. Call 911 and let them know immediately.

Exactly. Just stay put & don't even open the window. Although it looked like it might not have been fully touching the or only the wires were. Getting out would still possibly kill you. But you might be able to just drive or back the car out. But don't do anything except put emergency blinkers on from inside the car until directed to by emergency response. You might be what's holding it out of the water.

Don't ever get out the car near a downed power line, when the ground is wet. Water is a conductor of electricity and the electricity will kill you instantly through the water

Even if rainwater is particularly conductive, there is so much water all over that a lot of it will disperse harmlessly past a certain point.

My uncle lost his life to something exactly like you said. Fortunately it was the day before school so there were no kids but he was doing his routine bus route so there were no wrong turns, and he crashed into a telephone pole on a rainy day. The bus caught on fire and he was either gonna get burned or get electrocuted. the most horrific death ever, RIP Uncle Tim💔

Most shoes have rubber bottoms which don't conduct electricity so if you stepped out into the water that had electricity coursing through it the bottoms of your shoes would start to melt first

Maybe for them but I can speak to my partner and not have an annoyed response to my fear. We know how to treat each other respectfully and not like the other is being over dramatic for having a normal fear response.

Thank God they weren’t hurt! So dangerous! Here in El Paso,Tx we’re praying for rain! Sunday it was 112 degrees and yesterday we had a haboob that blew in! Dust so thick I could barely see across the street behind my house! Thank heavens it brought just moisture that settled the dust afterwards!

Must have never heard of Hurricane Matthew? Hurricane Florence? High winds, historical flooding. Had 5ft of water in my house. Not to mention that I lived in a elevated house with @ 2 1/2-3ft of crawl space. Had @ 10ft of flood waters surrounding. Lost everything I owned except family and pets. Had to evacuate by boat. I think that NC has had a lot worse weather.
