Is it possible to detect the radionuclide 115In (which makes up the majority of indium in nature) with your equipment?
@SimonsNuclearchemistry
@SimonsNuclearchemistry 3 ай бұрын
We did measure primordial radionuclides (there is a Video about it) and anything in the range of 10^10 years is easy to measure but 10^14 years in the case of In-115 might push it... would take some months but might just be possible

thanks for the video.. In the graph the X axis label is Channel number/ Is this related to energy at all?
@SimonsNuclearchemistry
@SimonsNuclearchemistry 3 ай бұрын
:) Yes it is. But the relation is somewhat exponential. Making it easier to differentiate radionuclides with similar low beta energies like H3 from C-14 but one could make the effort to attribute the channel number to energies. However we don't as we never need such an information :D

Finally, what you See in the Graph IS the raw Data of a spectrum analyser. IT IS derived from amplitude value of the pulse amplifier attached to the Beta sensitive Crystal. As the amplitude IS a function of the electron Energy consequently the Graph IS an uncalibrated Energy spectrum. Assining each x-channel with an precise Energy value IS quite a tedious Task, you rely ON an implizite calibration with known lines Like in the shown example.

I saw a documentary about the 2 Strontium 90 sources from then Lia case in 2001. Wouldnt it have been possible to shield the people who removed that thing with some plexiglas and a thin lead apron below it to stop the breaking radiation? Why did they throw it in a lead container and not a plexiglas one to prevent breaking radiation? Or does the source generate so much breaking radiation from shielding itself?
@SimonsNuclearchemistry

After a certain thickness the Lead generates and shields the generated breaking radiation at the same time^^

@@SimonsNuclearchemistry yeah, but why carry half a ton of lead to a remote place when a centimeter of plastic shield all the betas? As far as I understood betas dont have a halfvalue layer like gamma do, right?
@SimonsNuclearchemistry
@SimonsNuclearchemistry 3 ай бұрын
@@yaykruser tbh I don't know about that Lia Case but I'd guess because of the 2ish MeV line of its daughter Y-90 eventho its unlikely. In such high activities, it shouldn't be neglected
@yaykruser
@yaykruser 3 ай бұрын
@@SimonsNuclearchemistry Yeah, could be the hard betas, cause that thing was so hot the wood workers used it to warm themselves 🥵 But according to harvard even the 2.3Mev Betas should get stopped by just under 1cm of acryllic. Maybe I find one of these sources one day and can test it xd Btw, what are we measuring through the glass when you hold the geigercounter in front if it? Are those betas that penetrated the glass or is that breaking radiation?

Sr-90 is commonly used as a beta source in schools, presumably because it doesn't emit gamma so you can convincingly demonstrate blocking by a few mm of solid. So actually roughly half the activity will actually be from Y-90?
