I used to go mirror polished edges, Even to splitting hair, but with the paper towel test all that bite was gone, now that I've seen your videos I prefer lower grits with very aggressive bite that can do both, splitting hair and cutting paper towel. Mirror finish looks great but functionality is what I need. Also overstropping is a common beginner mistake that I've done.

I used to do the same thing, It took me realizing my old Leatherman always had a ton of bite and I never mirror polished it, I just hit it on a low grit and a medium grit stone because It was going to be abused as soon as an edge was put back on it.

Hello Jerad, as usual, very nice video with a lot of great info on sharpening and stropping; thumbs up and thank you very much for that! From about 1:55 to 2:05 (and some other times during the video), you briefly discuss about Sharpness by showing a sketch and I think there is kind of a confusion between Sharpness and Cutting ability... On the KnifeSteelNerds website, there is an article (Sharpness vs Cutting ability) where Thomas discusses about the difference between the two. Sharpness correlates very strongly with the thickness or radius of the very apex (micron or even sub-micron size) and is not really dependent on the edge angle which however is a strong component of Cutting ability. Sharpness and Edge angle are essentially two seperate variables that control Cutting ability. A LOT of people confuse both... The KSN article on the subject is really worth reading, as all of the KSN articles of course!

I'll admit, I have no idea if what you're saying is true, but I can tell that you're very passionate about this, so I'm subscribing. I suck at sharpening. I need all the help I can get. I even have a work sharp precision adjust that I just can't get right. Don't get me started on the Sharpmaker.

Jared..use a clothes lint roller to clean your stones plates strops..it pulls the steel off and it's so ez!

18°, 600 grit , strop off the bur ...works well on every folder. May not be the scientifically perfect method due to all the variables but it is the perfect no brainer do all that gives awesome results with all steels.

Thanks so much Jared. Stropping has been something that has been a struggle for me.

This video is great, but I still have a few unanswered questions such as what makes a strop good or bad? is hard or soft leather better why you would want one or the other as well as why would you use the smooth side over the rough side of the leather?

Seems like some steels respond better to stroping. The welmart d2 benchmade clone got much better with some stroping. The spyderco vg 10 improved but not as much. The vg10 and 420stainless seem like they don't want to get real sharp and they seem to get dull fast so i try not to buy those 2 steels anymore, the buck lockback with s30 was well worth the cost to upgrade from 420ss and the handle was slimmed down and they added a pocket clip

Whats best for a beginner to get started to be able to maintain the sharpness on a nice 20cv blade this will be my first premium knife and i wanna be able to take advantage of the sharpness of the knofe long term, i dnt think i could do a good enough job of maintaining an eagle to use a stone especially since im epileptic n shake some but im jus trying to fogure out whats best for me to buy to keep this new knife razor sharp bc right now i have zero confidence any of the pill through v notch sharpeners coild actually get any knife razpr sharp let alone a 20cv blade

If i buy the spray compound that you like whats the name of it gunny juice and can i spray that over the green paste that came with my strop.
@knifeknut699 ай бұрын
You really need to remove the green compound first. You can scrape it off with a razor blade. Use an edge trailing method so you dont cut your strop. Then, wipe off with some alcohol. Or just get a new strop.
@johnmackey31649 ай бұрын
You can make an old dirty strop like new in 30 seconds

Pt 2 Best Sharpness Tester can only work if it was machine driven. Same every test. Otherwise human variables screw the pooch.
