GAP element is an contact connection between two nodes. The contact behavior by GAP elements is defined by the initial separation distance (clearance) and orientation vector. In addition, GAP elements can be modeled with temperature degrees of freedom, custom stiffness and friction.

Can the contact detection not take care of the gap into and out of contact by itself?

Gap is only relationship between two nodes. For interaction between nodes do you need to difine gap distance. By (normal) contact conditions is contact tolerance - min. distance to search for contact between contact pair.
