Thanks for your insight. At school conference, a Chinese American scholar who writes on Eastern philosophies told me I ought to look into Chuan tsu. Because I'm already into a Merton this seems like a good place to start.

Although not directly relevant to the topic of this video, which is very informative and excellently presented, there is some controversy about the manner of Thomas Merton's death. There are discrepancies concerning the events of his death with many arguing that the electrocution from a fan idea is a cover story for which there is no supporting evidence. A recent admission that he was a 'person of interest' for the Counter American Activities programme being conducted by the CIA in SE Asia at the time of the Vietnam war, have led some to believe that he was murdered because of his support for the growing peace movement. Those interested in this story will find plenty of information on the web and You Tube. A useful resource is the book, 'The Martyrdom of Thomas Merton, an Investigation', by Hugh Turley and David Martin.

Reminds me of something Krishnamurti said when asked what he would do if he were walking along the street and his girlfriend was attacked. He replied that if it ever happened he would know then what to do. Fixed approaches deny the fluidity of Truth by trying to impose rules upon it. The dao is alive, is Life, and is always moving and changing.

Just a thought . . . isn't 'virtue beyond virtuousness', essentially another way of saying, 'Thy Will be done'.? Instead of doing what we think to be virtuous and correct, when we submit to the Will of God we move beyond what we want, and then act with true, rather than merely apparent, virtue.
