The key word here is *acknowledge.* The USA acknowledged China's position, but otherwise it was not entitled to interfere in how China handled its domestic matter. Many Americans still feel they are entitled to interfere in Taiwan's politics, and that they can come to Taiwan's defense in the event of military conflict. This entitlement only manifests as the USA's imperialist behavior on the world stage which China does not accept.

The US was slower to establish diplomatic relations with the PRC until it was realized in 1979, while France was earlier to establish relations with the PRC in 1964.

This would NEVER had happened if the USSR had not broken up with a fellow socialist ally. Imagine if USSR and China have united as one powerful ally, the world would be different today.

History is always a lot of 'ifs'. An entertaining but futile exercise.

At that time China was so poor and hard to organise that it could be catastrophic for China to follow central planning model of Soviets. I think Deng Xiaoping -ironically- saved the probability of socialism in China and even in the world.
