China’s Uighur minority live a dystopian nightmare of constant surveillance and brutal policing. At least one million of them are believed to be living in what the U.N. described as a “massive internment camp that is shrouded in secrecy,” while many Uighur children are taken to state-run orphanages where they're indoctrinated into Chinese customs.
The Uighurs' plight has largely been kept hidden from the world, thanks to China’s aggressive attempts to suppress the story at all costs.
VICE News’ Isobel Yeung posed as a tourist to gain unprecedented access to China’s western Xinjiang region, which has been nearly unreachable by journalists.
She and our crew experienced China’s Orwellian surveillance and harassment first-hand during their time in Xinjiang, and captured chilling hidden-camera footage of eight Uighur men detained by police in the middle of the night. We spoke with members of the Uighur community about their experience in these camps, and about China’s attempts to silence their history and lifestyle under the cover of darkness.

It’s always super insightful of the actual situation going on and shows the viewer what they’re not usually shown so they can make their own judgement. The sad thing is, as much as they tried to protect the identity of that individual on the train, the Chinese government can still tediously go through their records of when this reporter went on that train, see all of the people who boarded and/or bought a ticket, and be able to find out all of the ethnic Uighurs who were passengers. They can very easily find out who that man was, by process of elimination. They can get those answers out of the small handful of Uighurs who were on board, either through intimidation or torture.

+Last Word Maybe you weren't around for Pol Pot in Cambodia (Kampuchea): 2 million civilians killed. How about the Bosnian civil war during the early 1990s, or Rwanda (1994), where they tried to wipe out the Tutsi ethnic minority? The Rohingya situation has been ongoing in Burma (Myanmar) for some time now. So much for the 'peaceful' religion of buddhism, as buddhists gang up on muslims and Christians. ISIS and other islamic terrorists have been going after Christians in the Arab world ever since the so-called 'democratic' Arab Spring revolts. Kim Jong-un in North Korea is a butcher. He killed his uncle with an anti-aircraft gun and his half-brother with some shady chemical weapon. He builds nukes while peasants starved. His father before him was reported as saying, during a famine, that the death of 70 percent of his people would be acceptable so long as the regime survived. Sadly, this is par for the course. (Romans 3:23) 'For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.' But this is the first time in my memory that China has been exposed for 'ethnic cleansing'. This must be only a scratch on the surface of Chinese hypocrisy.

(Romans 3:23) 'FOR ALL HAVE SINNED AND FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD.' I mentioned quite a few instances of persecution. It so happens that in this case, Chines are doing it to Uighurs, using the EXCUSE of islamic terrorism. But the record of the CCP is well known. If it has murdered millions of its own CHINESE citizens in the past, why should it have difficulty commmiting crimes against a non-Chinese minority?

Fighting terrorism in Xinjiang kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2XGinhsepdqlck If you hate a none violence alternative such as the re-education camp, how do you feel about the millions of Muslims getting killed from the 19 years war on terrors? Brown University’s Costs of War Project this month released a new estimate of the total death toll from the U.S. wars in three countries: Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. The numbers, while conservatively estimated, are staggering. Brown’s researchers estimate that at least 480,000 people have been directly killed by violence over the course of these conflicts, more than 244,000 of them civilians. In addition to those killed by direct acts violence, the number of indirect deaths - those resulting from disease, displacement, and the loss of critical infrastructure - is believed to be several times higher, running into the millions. if anyones wondering what the situation is like almost 5 years later; I visited xinjiang to visit my grandparents just a month ago, and it seems that covid has pretty much obliterated all the police in the area. when I visited in 2019, the highway security checkpoints were almost like clearing international airport security and customs, but now you don't even have to get out your vehicle. there are also way less police everywhere and the CCP seems to be taking a different turn with the region, tourism. the flight I was on from Beijing to urumqi was over 90% tourist groups and so many cities in xinjiang have been transformed into tourist hotspots.

Thank you for doing this. As Chinese, I went to XinJiang in 2018 for a trip with my family and my heart sored every time we went through a check point(which was abnormally frequent). We never encountered any trouble there because we are Han Chinese, and we were truly there to travel. But I couldn't help but imagine how I'd be treated if I was Uyghur. At the time I had no idea what was going on expect that people were taken away from their homes and detained. We were only taken to places for tourists, and I never heard a world of compliant from the Uyghurs we encountered. Now that I look back, I realized they were forced to shut their mouth and act like everything is fine. While their family members were suffering, communities broke apart, and culture killed. The scale of the issue is so much bigger than I could ever imagine. Free the Uyghurs, no one is free until all of us are free.

When the US and its western allies keep on spreading the misinformation, propaganda, about the genocidal campaign against the nation’s ethnic Uyghur population is a BIG FAT lie. It has been known, often, those videos from those so-called investigation journalists and often disguises as a tourist were staged the interview and paid to the person or persons who interviewed and put in the videos. So that the investigation journalists got exactly what they wanted in order to support their biased one-sided reporting journalism. Often the journalists would paid the interviewer from $500 to $1000 Renminbi; if that person in the video can show more emotional then would received more money. The whole damn video interview was staged and paid for by the journalist. Fact in point if there is really a genocidal campaign against the nation’s ethnic Uyghur population in Xinjiang, then how the hell you can explain the fact in the decade to 2020, the population of China’s ethnic minorities grew 10.3 per cent, while the Han majority expanded at just below 5 per cent, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Last year, Han people accounted for 91 per cent of China’s 1.412 billion people. In any genocidal campaign the population should always keep on reducing and eventually down to a very significant in size or even down to nothing at all. As in the US, the Native American Indian was genocides by the US government during over two hundred years ago. The total American India tribes were reduced from several thousands to only few hundreds as nowadays. And this is what we called the genocidal campaign by the U S government to the Native American Indians. If you believe those video made by those investigating journalists you might as well believe that is a $3 US dollars bill in the US currency.

when i worked in Urumqi Xinjiang in 2016, my colleague told me not to travel southern part of xinjiang. such as kashgar and hotan. because it's very dangerous for the han chinese . Many locals were so poor ,undereducated and brain washed by the separatists supported by foreign countries. They were hostile to the han chinese. that's why the government wanted to reeducate them. we han chinese ppl are also ppl, why should we have to risk our lives just travelling in my own country? Do you guys know about the massacre against han chinese in xinjiang and yunnan ? you just know one side of the story. No one 's willing to figure out the real reason why there are so many police on the street. Our goverment taught the locals to be as a chinese, send them to schools so that they can not be easily brain washed by the terrorists. Especially the schools gave them skills to make a living ,rather than killing. what's wrong with that? There may have some tragic stories happened as recorded(although the woman looked pitiful, she and her family may have done some terrible stuff to other ppl . who knows? The journalist may never ask and she may never tell.that's what western propaganda always do) , but the good side definitely outweighted the bad side. the locals can speak their mother tongue, have their own religion, just not to be extremists. Imagine massacre targeting some race happened in your country, what your government would do about it? To be honest, i think you may never empathize with us, cause there's no such a large country in the world like china with so many people and so many peoples.

To give some more context, the Uyghur also were being fed misinformation or deliberately being fed views to encourage killing non-Muslims from Western social media platforms like Facebook. Its why there was such a peak of violence including several ethnic riots in Xinjiang around 2009 that led to innocent people being essentially lynched by mobs of people then leading to several other terrorists incidents in China. The beliefs were along the same lines of Islamic Extremism as groups like ISIS, and the US state department even labelled the East Turkestan movement as a terrorist group (when it was geopolitically convenient and before they became a proper CIA astroturf grass roots movement that is) Its also why Facebook got banned in China in 2009.

The difference is, the Uyghurs conducted terror attacks within hte country and wanted cessession, while the Hui did no. As such, this is a security issue, not one of "vanishing Muslims" (of which there are over 20 million).

Any Chinese who thinks this is right should accept that their own children should be locked up in a so-called kindergarten where they are forced to sing pro CCP songs and praise the regime non-stop. There are even locks at the doors preventing anybody from gping in or out including these children's parents who might want to pick up their children after 'class'. Talking about parents, have you guys noticed they are nowhere to be seen and these children never go out? It's perhaps because it's not a kindergarten but it's actually a re-education camp thus a damning evidence ethnic cleansing is taking place in Xinjiang and the Communist Party is responsible for it. I just want to know if a single Chinese here would accept his own children to be treated this way? China has 1.4 billions inhabitants and I can't think how this country would have become so rich without the government control. It is awful to see and hear what this people have to face but it is necessary to consider how China would be poor and how many millions of people would die from poverty and diseases in a caothic "democratic" state. There are many different ethnic groups in China and is very likely that they would have fought between them for independence or control, resulting in millions of deaths. The changes that need to be done in China will come through the hands of the new generation of chineses which are well educated and have access to a lot of resources and finance.

As an ordinary college student and an ethnic minority, such behavior is espionage. If you want to praise her for what she's done, okay, fine. I'm from a minority group, dong, we have our own language and our own culture, and the Chinese government has stepped up efforts in recent years, hoping that we can protect our cultural heritage. I have never been troubled by the fact that I am a minority. In fact, when I was in high school, there were more than 5,000 students in my school, most of whom were ethnic minorities. I can even say that there are many ethnic minorities in Guizhou province, China. Now it is distributed all over the country. I go home for the Spring Festival after the Spring Festival. I have never met any so-called trouble. If you don't believe it, I understand, if you simply believe it then I am shocked!! In China, there is only one kind of people in prison, that is to violate the social rules of China, such as splitting the country, this kind of behavior I feel is shameful!! If you don't know, there are 56 peoples in China!! Unless you do something extremely bad, prison is out of your reach. Believe it or not, a look will tell.

There are some interesting facts: Firstly, literally, every major city has many surveillance cameras in China so that we can ensure security, no one could dare to steal a car or commite other crime, because there's no place the camera won't catch you. Just like Americans setting their own cameras in front of their house. Recording every conversation is over-described. Secondly, interviewing such a lady to represent how Han peoples think about Uighur minority doesn't make any sense. i could also interview a neu Nazi and let him represent people in his country. Thirdly , The Chinese are generally simple, interested in foreigners, and unguarded. She probably even didn't aware of that she is recording. It's really so pointless and unconvincing for HBO to utilize this kind of stuff to discredit China and create an atmosphere.

@@timshrader64 well coming out and disavowing said statement is what you call being held accountable. Whether or not others still choose to be associated with that person after learning what they said 10 years prior is based upon how apparent that change in their character is. Usually if someone is fired or reprimanded it is because they deflect the outrage by pointing out how long ago it was said instead taking accountability. What someone said 10 years prior may be indicative of their current views especially if they’re currently using dog whistle rhetoric, & being associated with people that substantiate the idea that they may still hold such views. Perfect example is Justin Bieber, it was revealed that he has said racist things when he was a teenager. Although there is a certain segment of the population that is outraged, it has not seriously effected his brand because he immediately took accountability & apologized.

The video only showed how strict they are manage situation there after terrorism, it has nothing to do at all with the title vanishing muslim. It is very misleading. And what make me question the reliability of those people that did the interview is at 16:35 , that woman stated they give her letter stated she is terrorist, but they didn't even show us the content or a peek of that letter, isn't that supposed to be use as solid prove for their argument? And at 23:31 , the girl said 培訓(pei xun), which mean training, but the English subtitle wrote detainess. This video is full of weird play/manipulation/presentation.

@@TheExtraterrestrial99 You had to deny every other piece of evidence in this entire video to pinpoint on possible questions? Really dude? The entire video is full of damning evidence of what China is doing, along with countless reports, satellite surveillance, demographic data - all showing the same thing. This is not an argument. It's a fact. It's not "strict management". China has a whole shitload of horrific crimes which go on in their own city streets. I have literally been shown, folks being cut up with a cleaver in broad daylight in China. Are those not considered terrorism? Where are the re-education camps for them? I don't know if you're trying to deny it for your own mental comfort, for some deep bias, or for other nefarious reasons. But whoever is reading this, don't buy into the doubt he is trying to sow in your mind.

@@InaamHD Proved you don't really know China. Commit murder in China? That doesn't need re-education camp, it can go right to the death sentences or at least a very long sentence in prison. Ya, the so called "evidence" you found in video about Xinjiang, its is basically the same footage over and over again, and wonder if you notice, those video look kind of old. It is during the period they are cracking down terrorism. Re-education camp is not just for those already committed terrorism, it also for those have connection with them, to re-educated them to prevent this kind of act from happening again.

The entire video is biased and lack of authenticity. A photo-shot over one pad-lock of a residence's door = village is empty?? Unfortunately China doesnt have guantanamo bay to perform de-extremization off-shore. After several waves of terrorist attacks in Xinjiang, I believe security is the best welfare for all ethic groups. I've no clue about how does it contribute to the documentary of taking video in security checking point? is it thing she will do in the states?

I live in an ethnic minority area in the interior of China, where the conflict between ethnic minorities and communism is less obvious than on the frontiers. Partly because of industrialization and population movement (younger generations go to other cities to go to school)
@user-fs4rc4en8r
@user-fs4rc4en8r 3 ай бұрын
I don't think China has a problem with ethnic minorities. The problem is with religion, especially Islam, which is simply incompatible with the communist party and with the main population. The Islamic religion has the problem of inability for muslims to merge with other people through marriage without others converting to Islam. This necessarily means that, through long time, either Islam takes over the country/region, or is taken out by force. Any third option of coexistence is simply temporary and hoping it lasts is delusional. This can already be seen in European nations that have serious conflicts between muslims and the secular society. Without dramatic policy changes, most European democracies will eventually be voted to become Islamic nations practicing Islamic laws due to demographic changes in a few decades.

Have you ever thought about this is probably not because of government, but it’s because of stronger culture? Just like more and more people study English and live a life like western, wear a jeans instead of Chinese traditional clothes. Can we say that is cultural invasion from America or uk?
