Struggles of the female DJ.
Today's question comes from a 23 year old female DJ who feels she's not being taken seriously by local (male) DJ's. She wants to know if there's anything she can do to change the way (most) people look at female DJ's.
Even though I feel that you should never care what someone thinks about you, I can understand that you do want to be respected as a DJ.
First thing you need to realize is that you will have to work extra hard as a female DJ. There are times when your skin color or gender can work against you and this is one of those times!
I would like to see more female DJ's in 'the game', but even I have had 'problems' with taking female DJ's seriously, because a lot of the girls had no skills or just looked real uncomfortable behind the decks. And let's not even begin to talk about the famous females who now call themselves DJ and just stand behind the decks, act sexy, dance and make a ton of mistakes ;)
I have no problem if a female DJ wants to use her sexuality to promote/sell herself by taking sexy promo photo's, but when it's time to perform you have to be able to deliver! Radiate confidence, show real DJ skills and turn haters/doubters into believers one by one.
Shout out to my homie DJ Jane Doe (@DJJaneDoe). I used her picture for the thumb of this video #realDJ
Enjoy the video and share the knowledge!

I'm a 43 year old Female Dj and I'm going to list a few things that I find works for me. 1. EVERYONE AROUND YOU IS YOUR BROTHER OR SISTER - Having this outlook will allow you to not only feel comfortable but keep your eyes forward for the job at hand. 2. HAVE PERSONALITY - I usually walk thru the clubs and SPEAK...SAY HELLO...SMILE! You don't have to have a whole conversation but people will take your serious when they don't feel like you think your above them. 3. ALWAYS BRING A MALE WITH YOU - I usually bring my brother or my cousin but people don't know if it's your husband or what and so they will usually think twice before they say something stupid or try to make a pass at you. 4. SHOUT OUT IMPORTANT PEOPLE (PROMOTERS OR ARTISTS THAT WALK IN THE ROOM) - Get's you A lot of Respect when you acknowledge those who work hard just like you. When they have events they will shout you out and it will earn you a lot of Respect. 5. KNOW WHAT THE HECK YOUR DOING UP THERE! - Practice Practice Practice. Smaller events are the best places to try new "tricks" not in front of thousands of people. 6. REMEMBER YOUR AN ENTERTAINER - Put on a show...Interact with your audience. Honestly I have the hardest time with this. I used to make sure I had and MC or a HYPE MAN so that I could focus on music selection but guess what..YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO DO BOTH at the same time. You want respect...you've got to be the complete package! 7. KNOW YOUR SET - If your using turntables or a controller...be able to carry and set up your own set! Tip...if your just starting take a sharpie and mark your RCA's so you don't have to guess what goes where. I'm from the old school so I've always used turntables...this is the first year I've used a controller and so it's a lot less work. Good to know how to use both. Anyway, that's just my 2 cents! As a DJ you are your business. I had to learn to dress differently when I meet with club owners, and respect myself when I dress for events. The guy who taught me to Dj made it clear he was into me, so from the very first lesson he gave me I told him that if he ever comes at me inappropriately I would take legal action. I've found that when I was no longer worried about being a B***h I was taken more seriously. When I talk to local dj's I talk about my gear and tell stories from my gig's. If you want the men in the industry to treat you like a Dj, always be a Dj at events, never slip into party girl mindset. And just a word of advice, we all have that fantasy of having a Dj boyfriend who gets what you do... Skip it.... It's a lost cause.

GREAT QUESTION!!! Thanks DJ TLM for giving attention to this question. I'm a fan of your channel and find your videos entertaining and helpful. Share the knowledge, right? To the 23 year old female DJ with the "not being taken seriously" question: I believe that as a female DJs, we definitely have to prove ourselves through our SKILLS and the way we CARRY OURSELVES. If you're serious about being taken seriously, in order to be set apart, we females have to work at our skills as DJs that will naturally show in our performances. Add some flare to your set with some baby scratches. Learn creative transitions between songs. Know your gear. Be cool behind the tables. Other DJs will notice if you know your stuff. Sizing up is reality. But skill also recognizes skill. Practice, practice, practice. Learn, learn, learn. And use that extra effort we as female DJs need to put forward as inspiration in honing the craft of DJing. It's not easy. But what reward is there in things that don't require hard work? So, hustle hard and become a badass DJ that has skills, knows her gear and commands those tables like a boss. Do that, and earn the respect you're looking for. BEST OF LUCK!

Put in a nutshell just get your game up so that when you're heard people are like "OH SHIT!!!!". Whatever genre you're gonna specialize in, master it. Or better yet master as many genres as you can. Cutting and scratching all though great in sets isn't really a must when rocking a crowd. Smooth transitions full of impact and good track selection is really what's gonna get you noticed when playing music. Master those 2 elements and then move on to adding turntablism to your sets because that's gonna take more practice to master and add into your sets at the right time. If you can do both then that just puts you head and shoulders above the rest. Share the knowledge!!!!

As you said, "men will be men." I have to disagree. We as men have to take some responsibility for ourselves. To all the men in the industry, just be professional! And learn to look past the gender of deejays. Simple as that.

You can disagree as much as you want, but what I said is a fact, not an excuse. A lot of men think with their penis first. And to say "learn to look past the gender of DJs, simple as that" is a bit naive. Trust me, I agree that we all need to be professional, but history has proven that it is not simple for humans to look past things like skin color or gender. We still have a long way to go.

Waddup!! Female DJ here!!! I definitely feel as though my barriers are harder to break because of my gender, but I will never let that stop me from dominating!!!! I practice everyday!!!! You have to really want that shit!!! You have to want to shut people up and make them see your talent!! I love meeting other DJs when I go out and here them say "Dammmn girl, you nasty" Hearing this helps but even if I don't that just makes me even hungrier to be the best!!!

I go to the DJ society at my uni where Djs hang out and we teach new DJs the basics. When I took my female friend down there because she was interested in learning, the main teacher suddenly started talking to her in a really condescending fashion, probably assuming she was a dumb girl who didn't know anything (despite her doing a music technology course). She soon shut him up though when she managed to beatmatch a track on DVS almost perfectly on her first try.

DJing isn't about your gender/skin color. It's about how the person delivers the show/performance. Is he/she professional or not. Men will be men but if men treated girls seriously then it would be easier. I as a Male DJ No one has really disrespected me but even when i see other DJ's I treat them by how they deliver the show not how they look or gender or their personality. I don't mind if the DJ Is a girl or a boy, if they deliver a good show then I will respect them and so should you !

ideally stop saying female djs unless you will call all men male djs. Sounds weird doesnt it "what do you do" "oh I'm a male dj" men are djs why do women need to be gender labelled? it separates us from the get go. if you aren’t being taken seriously work on your skills totally agree about the way a dj looks behind the booth male and female.

Literally just talked about this. I was contact by a woman that was terrified to come out as a feminist because she was worried her male piers wouldn't take her seriously. Go figure, eh? Female artists deal with awful situations all the time, wanting to stand up for themselves but we know the harassment that will come with that too. It's really heart breaking. Many of us still do, but too many are still afraid to. We need everyone involved in the conversation supporting one another.

Yo! That was the funniest video I have ever seen you make. You talking about female dj's and the sound of tarzan in the backround. Lol. That shit had me on the floor son. I know you looking out for female dj's. I personally think it would be easier for them to know what songs to play. Cause we male dj's are always trying to make them get on the dance floor.RIGHT! So. Being serious about your Kraft. Is the bottom line. As far as males not taking you serious. Only time and your skills will take care of that. Besides. Dominicanas are very sexy. 100% agree with TLM (as usual) but a female DJ in bikini with high heels and a strass necklace CAN'T be taken seriously, and yes I have seen some of them into the edm/dance/club scene. (even a topless one !) You don't need do dressed like a man, but no need to dress like a pornstar too... I have 2 female dj that I know well, and they mostly dress like women, not like sluts.

I have a question now, I am lost to what is a DJ.. It seems in your view it is scratching, cutting, and mixing.... The other DJs who are standing around and hoping around are usually DJs/Producers.. I am sort of lost why these the other DJ's who scratch cut, and mix hassle the DJ/Producer. Or is it just the EDM scene they attack. I just don't get it.. IF they were a DJ/Hip-hop producer doing the same as DJ Mustard it doesn't make sense because his sets are usually the same but with gun shots with a transition and talking on the mic.. I am lost what is a real DJ and why all DJ's attack each other crafts.
@djonixx7149
@djonixx7149 9 жыл бұрын
Chatto soce That is a good question. First, I would like to say that I have been following TLM's channel for about a year or so and have watched most, if not all of his videos. I have to say that he is one of the few that have not "attacked" another DJ still and seems to be very open minded and progressive in this art form. TLM has stated several times that he prefers a certain style of music and that is what he plays, but it is not a knock on other DJs or genres. What I have seen him do is challenge DJs who work in other genres to step up their performance for the sake of the audience who have paid good money to see and hear them. All of that being said, having grown up in the Bronx during the birth of Hip Hop, I know that what constitutes a DJ as we know it today, stems from that culture. From it's earliest days, performers always challenged (attacked) each other, this is a part of what made the culture so strong. It is also what pushed these performers to better themselves, thereby elevating the art form. This no different than rap battles, dance battles or any other form of the culture's battles. To address your question of "what is a real DJ", I feel that a "real DJ" is someone who can move the crowd with music. They connect with their audience and play what that audience wants to hear, even if the audience doesn't know it yet. The DJ doesn't have to scratch or perfect turntablism, but he/she should always be working to make their set better every time they play. A "real DJ" will rise to any challenge presented to his/her craft.
@Chatzosauce
@Chatzosauce 9 жыл бұрын
DJ Onixx Thank you for your comment. Yeah, I agree with you that each and every DJ should push to better their craft in their genres. and on that note thank you.
@djTLMtv
@djTLMtv 9 жыл бұрын
Chatto soce In my opinion a good DJ is someone who rocks the crowd (most important part) with technical skills (mixing, eq, timing, knowledge of beats and bars, etc), musical knowledge (deep crates) and has the ability to read the crowd and react accordingly. If that DJ is also creative and able to show his/her personality through their delivery and choice of music, you have a great DJ. Turntablism (scratching, beat juggling, etc) is not what makes a DJ a good DJ, but I think it is a great skill to add to your skill set and it can set you apart from a lot of other DJ's who do not have that skill. I never attacked the DJ/producers. I only talked about the lack of creativity that is being displayed by (a lot of) the superstar EDM DJ's. I have no issue with any genre. My roots are Hip Hop music, but I play Hip Hop, R&B, Dancehall, Soul, Funk, Disco, New Jack Swing, 2 Step (UK Garage), Trap, Dubstep, Reggaeton, Salsa, Electro, Latin (House), EDM, etc. It all depends on the party I play. Most of my gigs will be Hip Hop/R&B, but at certain events I add small blocks (10/15 minutes) of House to make sure I please the whole crowd. And I've seen one DJ Mustard set (on KZbin) and it was not good. I love his productions and he might be a good DJ, but that set was nothing more than playing a selection of his own productions with no real blends or skillful transitions. Just a lot of screaming and gun shots ;)

My thoughts are know your craft and be good at what you do, don't rely on sync, be able to beat match with your eyes closed, work on every technique possible, even now as a female DJ representing the UK, i learnt on vinyls before i was 10 playing lovers rock and reggae in my dads room however iv never learnt the craft of scratching, however practising more and more and locking it down gradually. i feel there is a stereotype about female DJs but as TLM says don't let it ruin it and prove you are good even if you have to go that extra mile. I experience all kind of things especially because I'm a female, the colour of my skin and maybe because of my hair too, there always a perception however let your talent and craft do the talking.
@DJStarkS23
@DJStarkS23 9 жыл бұрын
Why is it so important to be able to beatmatch without SYNC when you can use it ??? the point is the vibe you give to people no matter the way you make it. The listeners don't care of witch button the DJ hit or not. They just want good sound. I prefer a DJ who use the SYNC well with goo music than an other who beatmatch with ears but produce sh*t.

You're a big fan, but clearly not a great listener ;) When did this topic change to "the harassment of women"??? This was about a female DJ who was not taken seriously by the other local DJs and she wanted to know my take on how not to be viewed as a sex object. Please do not change my words. I do NOT condone the harassment of women and I did NOT make excuses for men's ill behaviour! When I said my opening statement: "Men will be men and there's not much that's gonna change when it comes to that. When you're a woman and you dress nice (not even sexy) you're gonna get that attention. And most men that give you attention are only out for one thing". What I mean by that is that a lot of men think with their penis first and that's not going to change. Unless you want to start drugging boys when they hit puberty to suppress certain hormones ;) And when it comes to my description of the girls who touch the equipment in a "girly" way I'm just being honest that I have doubts because it often looks as if they're touching the equipment for the first time. They weren't radiating any confidence which made me not take them seriously. Btw, I have those same doubts when I see a lot of dudes standing behind the decks, but this video was all about female DJs. And yes, I do feel that something that has not helped "the cause" is the fact that a lot of females without skills chose to use their sexuality to promote their DJ brand. All they posted were pics and vids of them dancing behind the decks in the shortest dresses (or even less), but no footage of actually DJ'ing. I understand that sex sells so I would never knock that, but if sex is the only selling point it's a shame. And let's not even go into the celeb females like Paris Hilton. That did not help either. Luckily things are looking up! I follow countless female DJs on IG who post a lot of performance vids. Actual footage to show their skills. That is the best way for any DJ (male or female) to be taken seriously by other DJs.

I admit I hate when women accentuate their looks and sex appeal to get ahead in the DJ world but it happens in pretty much every industry and when you think about it a guy can just be as guilty in a different way. A lot of the time I see guys with all the swag, attitude, and personality but will be train wrecking the mix and still think they're all that. I guess I'd have to agree, if you bring something to the table besides skills that pushes you forward in your career, that's all great but you best believe you better have the skills to back it up. You may be more famous but it comes with the cost of respect.

Love this! It is important to be as good or great as a guy. You will be exposed eventually so work hard and do the research. Always be super professional no matter how you look. Talk like an exec and play like you are in back parks in the Bronx (Oh the memories!). xoxo -

First thing you can do is just be better than your competition, Male or Female. Next, Network with the DJs that DON'T give you crap because you are a female. Go over to each others houses and practice with them. Have hours long scratch Q&A sessions with them. build a team scratch routine with them, Something you could impromptu show off at either of your clubs. These will work even if you don't consider yourself a turntablist. Book a few gigs as a team with a friend DJ like TLM does with DJ Turn. Now for the real meat... Don't give a crap about what the other DJs think (except the ones that WANT to NETWORK with YOU or MENTOR you) Instead worry more about what the managers and club OWNERS think about you. Learn how to rotate the dance floor and increase sales at the bar. Also developing a following that increases the draw at the door ain't bad either but the sales at the bar will always rule. If you can show that people spend more money at the bar when you spin than when the other DJs spin then that's all the owner cares about. If you know how to rotate the dance floor tell the bar owner to look at the sales figures on nights you spin compared to DJ BOO BOO (who only spins for his friends) Make the bar money and you are golden, leading to more bookings for higher fees and other DJs wondering how you get those payouts.

Hi all.. There was party last weekend here, and promoter was asking me if I can borrow him my needles, at first I was like, boy you are doing party and you dont have needles? But then he told me that al Djs playing are females and bum my inner knight/gentleman alarm went of, and I was all like hell I cant leave ladies without needles :D So I think there are some + in being female DJ. They were all proffesionals, but not from my city- thats why none of them had needles. and for the promoter I send him link to your Never assume anything video :D

Since I am a female DJ, let me give you insight to what I have experienced and respond to what others here in the forum are saying: When I first started training, It was with a longtime friend/Owner of the BoothPimps.com / Houston Rockets Official DJ, but unfortunately it's a bit difficult to drive to Houston for more lessons and exposure. So here in Austin, I had started networking with new DJs by simply going up to them and introducing myself. Yes, I've already had some DJs lure me into hanging with them claiming to wanting to help me / show me mix + transition tricks and suddenly trying to kiss me.(Ug!) So Ladies be careful...cause we can be too nice sometimes and not realize that guys will still be guys. OR when I have a boyfriend, then some other DJs will basically not show as much interest in helping / working with me or get together to go over some tricks + technical stuff. So yes, I feel that in those ways I was not taken seriously. Some events I have had to dress up for but by no means would I ever go topless or wear a bikini, LOL! I am a girly-girl and will always try to look my best or damn cutest but tasteful. Many times when I have reached out to my real DJ friends that have been DJing on turntables for nearly 2 decades because I want to "up" my game, they all tell me the same thing, "If you started on a controller, then just stay on a controller cause after 2 years of DJing its just going to be hard and expensive for you. Stick with what you know" so many times I get confused because I see that most of the DJs in bars / clubs are ON TURNTABLES. I have reached out deeper to a couple DJs buddies to let me be their Roadie at their gigs, show me the full set up / then let me do the work, let me hang with them in the booth (some are too small though) so I can watch and listen in on my headphones, and to let me "go in" once in a while, but again...it's like pulling teeth to actually get some action going. I'd like to learn more technical / sound stuff but the DJ school here is so darn expensive. and yes, I wish I could be like Kayper...she's bad ass. and Thanks DJ TLM for addressing this question:) Have a great day everyone:) ~Alicia DJ Free The People www.DJFreeThePeople.com

Hi TLM, I have a question for you: I'm getting into Djing and I really dig hip hop music and turntablism, but when I think about playing in a club or at a party, my idea is that 99% of people are there to dance and have fun, and they aren't really there to watch and listen to the dj scratching, trick mixing etc. How do you deal with it? Do you have any rules about putting tricks during a gig? Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your job.

Hallo. Groetjes, Siebren.

I am a Fair person and believe female can do anything they want. But unfortunately you are going to have to put in work like every other Dj that is working to be a legit DJ. I love seeing females that can mix well. scratching is definitely a plus. But don't let any one hold you back.

Yeah I just feel like people who take DJing seriously will be able to take a female dj seriously if she shows that she takes it seriously as well. I mean Paris Hilton being one of the top-paid female DJs is not helping them out. There's obviously a bias, but if you get people who really care about the music, I think they can look past it.

minigand Yeah, Paris isn't really helping. If she had skills, she could really help to promote female DJ's, but from what I've seen she has no skill level at all.

Big Ups to all female Djs. Just do it your style. I can't believe it's hard cuzif you hav skills and play nice music I will be entertained to hear ur sound . Neva doubt on yourself. Sexy or not sexy? Be real. Be confident with decency. I wouldn't respect a guy whos doin the same if hes doin or sayin strange things to get attention from girls. By the way. Best Dubstep Dj in SA is a girl and her set was dope. And shes known to be the best. And that club has alot of male Djs.Another girl... Dj Zinhle Is crazy good (also producer) but it will be hard to find songs from her. Mostly u find one song which is boring. I remember when I was sitting wit my friend in a shack of another friend we were goin thru all his sounds on the computer the refresh my friends sound. We were jumpn jumpin...picked a song here and there...since we stucked in the folder of Dj Zinhle . So sou just see Females r respected. Respect yourself and always try to be the best u can be and make researches every day for a unique sound. Peace

Shane Flaa Hi Shane, could you be more specific with your question? I didn't understand the "can u say what should I do and gig" question. Are you asking me if I think you are too young to do gigs? And if you are just starting I would say practice, practice, practice. That's where it all begins

Being a female Dj is just like a dude wanting to be a cheerleader. Is it odd? Yep. But to breakaway from the statistic, you've gotta be better that then person trying to challenge you. You you out mix a guy on their on gear you will earn their respect. Just like if the male cheerleader out benches the guy making fun of them, he punks them down. To be the man, you gotta beat the man, so practice practice practice, then take on your challengers. Woo pig out.

Wtf is this comment. Why would it be odd for a female to want to be a DJ? Is there something in our Gender DNA that says only men would be interested in mixing music.

@@TheMPExperience Not here in Europe. especially the techno scene in Berlin has many great female DJs and lots of us go see female over male DJs because they tend to play much darker and more energetic sets than their male counterparts.
