Matt is my Mentor and I can honestly say his lessons have been an absolute game changer for me! I've been playing for 10+ years and always struggled with accuracy and speed around the kit and since working with him on a 1-1 basis my playing has come on leaps and bounds! Keep up the good work dude this lesson is awesome!!!! Love ya Broski! (It's Tony btw 😂)

The purpose for learning the Free/Full stroke is to allow the student to understand the full rotation... the "plain" if you will, of the stick. The 4 basic strokes need to be understood and practiced slowly so that one can understand the physics and feel them in the hands. Similar to the double strokes where you pull the second double out. Joe Morello's book Master Studies I addresses these issues and strokes. It's not the whole equation but it's an important one.

Great video, Matt! I have got caught up too much in spreading myself to thin on the drums. I am trying to master too many things while trying to learn songs for gigging in the blues and blues rock band I am in. Time to wind things back so I can improve what I need for the current music I am playing and once that is to my liking, then commence one other thing to master/get better at, one at a time without other parts of my playing suffering.

Inspiring and great lesson. Wow. I’ve still got my syncopation book my dad bought me in the early 70’s. Same book as yours. My teacher then had me doing some exercises which may have limited my learning. Like , holding coins against the stick with my fingers. To make sure my grip was always firm. I always used heavy 5C sticks. Now having better success with lighter sticks. Just need to unlearn my bad grip habit . Thanks man
@infinitydrumming8 ай бұрын
There are alot of methods that can actually make things harder rather than easier. It's important to stay as loose as possible with the grip while maintaining accurate control of the direction the stick. One cool tip, on those days you find your hand are dry or cold, use Mr Zogg's stick wax to create some tackiness, so you don't have to grip the sticks too hard to maintain control. 😁

Great video - I’d call your attention to 7:37, where your hand looks pretty much the way I strive to make mine look when I’m doing doubles. I don’t draw a distinction between doubles and drop catch at the beginning, because I think it’s about energy management. But I would give students the very advice you caution against at the beginning as a means to get their hands doing what yours are at 7:37. With all due respect, it looks like you’re dropping the wrist below the axis of the forearm - which is no criticism because I think this is a Good thing - because your hand can feel how much energy is needed to put into the stick to get an even bounce back. I agree that once you’re specifically working on doubles as independent from push pull, you need less energy, so the “drop” wrist motion can be more attenuated. The other difference in our approach is I don’t emphasize fingers at all, because one of my first teachers over emphasized fingers and that caused me to “force” the stroke by pinching it, instead of working with the energy of the stick. I’ve seen many students get caught in similar quagmires, and I wonder if simply practicing singles is an easier way to get students to incorporate the fingers without overemphasizing them. I like the approach you do leading up to 7:37, and the sound you get with your doubles, so I think it’s just about different coaching cues getting out students to a similar place.

Great . This is exactly why Tommy Igoe doesn’t talk about upstrokes . If you bully the first note you get “ the lawnmower roll “ I love this stuff but even Gordy Knutson who uses graphs & that stuff has said if you can do a double stroke well you’re utilising push pull . I find my former biggest flaw was not being loose enough & letting the sticks do the work . Sorry I don’t think improving facility happens with dedicated and regular practice but perhaps wisdom does .

Matt, that was great and a much better way to explain and teach the double stroke roll. You need to post more content. I’ve always struggled to get a double as clean as you have it down. So I’ll work on this lesson. A double cheat sheet you say? I’d be interested in that. And maybe, break down that double stroke solo you did at the ending. Basically the transition from the roll to the toms and back again so smoothly. 👍
