I can't get along with the interface of the BigSky and prefer the Eventide algorithms. If you find the Space has too many presets, you can easily limit them to however much you need through the software. Afterall, a preset is just a bunch of settings within an algorithm. The BigSky always sounds like it's on top of the mix to me, rather than part of it. What I really like about the Eventide algorithms is that no matter how ridiculously far you push them (be it large or small), they'll still sound amazing. It's all taste though. The high end Boss (Rv-500, even worse interface), Meris (also the Polymoon!), Empress and Ventris stuff also really has to be mentioned when talking about other options, they weren't around yet when I was in the market though.

Watching this with the captions on and the translator trying to make sense of the synths is fun . So yeah this pedal is amazing . I do think if you are on a budget the zoom multieffects stomp box is a incredible value tho . The playability of the big sky is tough to beat tho .

I narrowed this down to the Strymon and Eventide. I ended up going with Eventide and agree is quite a dark reverb. A hidden gem in my arsenal is the Lexicon Vortex rack unit from the 90s. Cheap and quirky if that's your thing.

It's about reverb for synthesizers and nobody mentions the wonderful OTO Bam? I was recently faced with the task of deciding on a suitable reverb for my setup. Shortlisted were Bigsky, Space, Meris Mercury 7, Empress Reverb and Bam from OTO. What differentiates Bam from the others is that it is a desktop effect and therefore you can operate buttons instead of the footswitches. As far as the sound is concerned, i think we are in a price and quality class where taste is probably more important because none of those sounds bad. Bam could convince me completely because it not only ranges from large ambient sound effects to subtle Room impression (which makes it very useful for mixing purposes aswell), but also percussive sounds or drums benefit greatly from it because the transients are not washed out as I had the impression with Bigsky. I can not remember being so impressed with a reverb.

Best results for me have been using as a fx send in a mixer, blending the dry synth sound on one channel with the wet on the return. I found this to be better sounding than running my synth directly into big sky and then using the wet knob on that to mix, at least for my prophet 6. The chorale sound is otherworldly on pads! Hey even if your fx send is in mono, you can still run a stereo output back to your mixer for a great sound (as long as you have two mono channels or one stereo channel available). That's actually how I use it with my Yamaha MG10xu.

Wait.. so say my synth has stereo.. it would be better to have the effect pedal just take two channels on my mixer (Stereo) and then bus that to route to each channel my synth has a recording on? Or just the live channel to my synth to tweak it that way? Good thing I have a 64 channel mixer but yikes.. I can see this becoming an issue for those with 5-7 pedals on their rig xD So to sum up, having the effect pedal go into the board, and then send to the synth was better?

Really great demo. I've not tried the BigSky personally but it always sounds great in demos. I swear by the Strymon Dig, Deco and El Capistan though. As for reverb I've tried a few others and they all had strong and weak points (Strymon Flint, Boss RV-7, Meris Mercury 7, Neunaber Immerse). Finding an all around superb reverb pedal is a tall order. I'm currently seeing what I can do with a Ventris. Edit: I was going to be sad if you didn't play the OB-6 in this demo. It sounds so good it's retarded. Thank you!

Versus older pedals or digital pedals make it sound potatoe It’s like when people pay for mastering and send a crap mix and get mad at the engineer. @jonaseggen2230
@jonaseggen2230 5 жыл бұрын
From looking at many different reviews and trying loads of pedals I think it's mostly a matter of tastes. Strymon, Empress and Eventide are maybe the tree best, but it also depends on how you want to use it. These three pedals take loads of dedication to learn how to use as they are wherry complex instruments. They are a bit different in operation and something to take into consideration, not only how they sound. Most people who got any of these pedals find the settings they like best and forget the rest. Then there are other really good upper mid range options like Meris: "Mercury7", GFI System: "Specular Tempus", Ventris: "Dual Reverb" and Earthquaker Devices: "AvalancheRun". Less expensive but really good for synths are also Earthquaker Devices: "Afterneath", Read Panda: "Context", Digitech: "Polara", and TC: "Hall of Fame". Electro Harmonix: "Cathedral" is also a really fun pedal. Cheap and bang for the bucks is the Zoom: "Multi Stomp". For many, and maybe particularly guitarists who are not used to tweak so much, or people who play keys and have enough knobs as it is, It might be better to buy two or three cheaper pedals.

Unless they deliberately pronounce it differently, I'm pretty sure it's Even-tide, not Event-ide. It basically means evening. I'm still a newbie, and I have a hard time justifying such an expensive reverb (i say that even as I plan out a Eurorack system to start on in the hopefully near future). I'm using a Digitech Polara. I'm pretty happy with it, although I need to play with it more to really learn how to dial it in where I like it. With my future Eurorack, I'll probably start with something cheaper, like an Erica Synths Pico DSP or an Accutronics spring reverb tank, while I save for an Erbe-Verb.

Really good summary. I'm finding it exceptionally hard to choose a reverb pedal. There are just so many options and most of them sound very similar and very good. I'm also looking at Zoom G3n and Line 6 Helix LT for all the effects I need in one box solutions.
@jonaseggen2230
@jonaseggen2230 5 жыл бұрын
Unless you have other pedals with other effects you like and want to continue to use such a pedal is probably for most reasons the best option. What first comes to mind is price, power and space issues. Lets say you don't have any pedals. Then I would go for the cheapest of the two you mention, in this case the zoom. This because then you can after the novelty has faded find out if you more than occasionally use other effects than two or three, or the most common ones. If this is the case and you find the sound in that Zoom pedal not to be good enough on these settings then you can add let's say a dedicated reverb and a delay, or one of several combinations of these two, for example the Avalanche Run. This of course depends on how picky you are and what type of music you play. I would however think twice about an expensive multi stomp like the Line 6 because it is loads of money for something that has maybe only two or three effects that sound really really good in your ears. I also in my list forgot to mention Boss. They are really good and since produced in such large numbers you get the most for your money. If you are or end up being a pedal-head, then you want to tweak as much as possible, experiment with the order of the effects and such, and then getting and trying out as many pedals as possible becomes a thing in it self, but to go down that rabbit hole is another story. My hobby is modular synths so for me it could be natural to be a pedal harvester, but at the moment I only use reverb and sometimes delay. My first reverb was a TC Hall of Fame that I still think is a really nice pedal, and the first delay I got was a Digitech Obscura. The TC HoF also has this Tone Print function that lets you make or download custom reverbs. The Obscura is also really nice with loads of cool functionality. I find it a bit clinical or to clean sounding for my tastes, but as I don't use delay that much it's more than good enough. The Only pedal I really use at the moment is an Eventide Space. Ridiculously expensive but an instrument in it self. For most guitarist, unless you play ambient, I think this one is rather pointless because as I said, it takes a long time to master and means loads of tweaking on knobs and reading to be fully utilized. This is for most people probably time better spent on playing.

@@jonaseggen2230 Hi thanks for your excellent response! I make electronic music with synthesisers. Any kind of synth music really from ambient, down tempo, techno and soundtrack type stuff. I'm looking to expand my hardware setup and get way more live tweaking and hands on control. I generally use plugins by Soundtoys, Lexicon and Valhalla DSP but I really don't enjoy programming in the box. I don't currently own any outboard effects. I could quite easily see myself becoming a bit of a pedal collector though although I am used to the more all in one type deal. I've been watching A/B's between Strymon, Source Audio, Eventide, Empress, Line 6, Boss etc. They all sound pretty good and at most usual settings I don't think there's a great deal between them sonically which makes it very hard to pick. I've also been comparing delay shootouts and finding the and thing. I do quite like the classic chorus like the dimension and Ce2 though.
@jonaseggen2230
@jonaseggen2230 5 жыл бұрын
Made in Machines Oh, yes, synths. If you have not already got a mixer I do recommend that. On mine, a Soundcraft EPM I can sett up two fx chains, although to many pedals would be a hazard for me regarding extension cables/electricity and grounding issues, that kind of thing. An alternative to pedals is rack units. After I got my Eventide pedal I was offered secondhand one of the best Eventide rack units for half the price of my pedal. I'v also seen Lexicons secondhand. No regrets though because work space is limited and racks are not that tweakable. But it's a thought. As studios close down or people get kids It is possible to get really good studio gear secondhand. (Btw all of my Eurorack consists of secondhand or is bought on sale.) If I hadn't got the Eventide for a good price I would probably go for Empress or Meris Mercury 7, but that's just about taste. One of the cooler chorus pedals I'v heard is Julia by Walrus audio. Also their Decent Reverb Octave machine is wherry good for mono synths. I got a Harmonist ps 6 by Boss that is also nice to use with mono synths. My other Boss is a looper that I find great to use for ambient stuff and recording, although a Ditto Looper by TC is probably easier to use. At the moment all my money goes to synths/modules and not pedals, but I like to test and watch demos of all the new and interesting pedals that people make.

I do need a new audio interface - I've been looking at the RME ones and the Focusrite. I've been considering some of these multichannel usb mixers as an alternative but am not sure about the quality or audio interface reliability/performance. Since I have a drum machine that would take up 6-10 outs alone. I do like the idea having a hardware mixer but I'm not sure if it's the way to go since i'd be running that into an audio interface anyway with individual outs - more cable mess and possible degradation of sound. I didn't know you could set up 2 send returns. I'm not really sure about racks - they put me off with their depth, menus and lack of hands on control. Which lexicon and eventide racks are you referring to? One of the soundcraft mixers actually has built in lexicon effects I've been watching demos of the Empress and the Tempus as well as the Big Sky. They all sound really great. It's quite a hard choice. Ocean machine seems like a really good hands on delay /reverb too. Really like this big sky demo and the Peter Dyer ones - kzbin.info/www/bejne/on-kZoOJhNGJbbc I'll have to check out those chorus pedals.

I've watched of your videos now, I really like how professional and informative you are. But I'm like a donkey trying to catch a carrot dangling in front of its head, it can never quite catch. In other words I;d love the gear you show, but I can't afford it. This is wonderful. I got rid of my neighbors with a Roland JD 800, now I know what this box of tricks does, I'll scare the whole block. I'll have to get a bigger piggy bank. you play really nice. keep it up. Greetings from Sheffield. UK. Home of the Human League.

moog Dome - There are always cheaper ways to get similar results, I’ve got a much less expensive MXR 300 and it does the job for me.

The Eventide space I tried had a high frequency I could not get rid of. Like when you have a light on a dimmer that starts to squeak, it was awful. Problem was, the salesman couldn't hear it. After plugging in the Big Sky it was obviously going to be part of my setups. I have used it on guitar, synth, and percussion with great effect. You could probably put a wet fart though it and get a usable tone.

Ventris Dual Reverb much more natural sounding tails and with the dual engines your f/x possibilities are much deeper. Look up Sonic States review of the VENTRIS.

The Ventris sounds really nice and silky on Sonic State. I can see each box being used to get a different kind of sound out of those long sustaining reverbs. I think it's really down to personal preference regarding how you want to color your sound.

If you don't have a lot of money to spend on a pedal I would recommend buying a Zoom MS 70CDR, it's a lot of bang for your buck.

That’s some heady reverb. Almost makes your brain think there is accidental audio in the video, coming from a “forgotten webcam mic” in some instances... very cool!
