Got this one coming to my studio! Strymon, love that you are converting some of your pedals into Eurorack modules like this for us studio folks (Volante/Magneto & NightSky/Starlab). Please keep that going! Guitar pedals are great for live performance/amp users but for DI and Synth applications in the studio I’d rather have modules like these. Not that you can’t use pedals that way, I do, but modules are a great option for studio work. Would love to see expanded versions of Deco, DIG & the Mobius “destroyer” algorithm as Eurorack modules!

Ahhh, interesting. It always seemed like my NightSky felt like a synth module jammed into a pedal format. This makes much more sense. Although tbh the parameters are less forgiving than, say, the Big Sky. Definitely gotta find sweet spots carefully. Which would make me think twice about using those CV inputs. Be sure to leave some hp for attenuators next to that behemoth.

To understand what the StarLab was doing, I had to "reverse engineer" the modules on the left side of the rack: a lot of modulation: LFO's, sample and hold, and dynamic filtering going on. So aside from watching Pete twist a few knobs, the "last module" before the StarLab was 8 LFO's controlled randomly, for example. At 34 minutes this video was pretty daunting, but adding a few seconds of "clean tone" (bypassing the StarLab to a vanilla VCA/out) would help. That said, it is an incredibly interesting demo, and I own several Strymon FX pedals that I program with and without MIDI so I know it's hard to know when to stop demo-ing what their stuff can do.
@strymon3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the feedback, Frank! We will be adding some recording notes to the video description to make the audio path a bit more clear, we hope! Pete does start several of the examples dry, including near the beginning of the video when each reverb texture is introduced at 01:00, 03:54, and 05:06. If StarLab's Wet knob is at minimum and the Dry knob is turned up, then you are hearing only the unprocessed input signal. The Instruō øchd 8-LFO module you mentioned is present in the skiff but is not used in any of the examples. For all the examples that required an input source, Pete used a very basic input signal consisting only of an oscillator running through a low pass filter, with the filter output connected directly to StarLab's input. Hope this helps! :)

I have been a long time Strymon fan, but they are the only pedals that I have ever had to send in for repair. I had an Iridium that just stopped working - all my pedals are powered by an Ojai. I thought maybe I hit the Iridium with phantom power from my preamp by mistake., but I can't be sure. Pedals usually last forever. But then I recently got a Zelza. I loved the sounds, and it worked for about a week. I had bought both pedals from a local store here in London, so I took them in and they had them both replaced free of charge under warranty. One week later, the new Zelza stopped working. Every other pedal in my chain has been fine, so it isn't a system issue. I realise things break, but two Zelzas and an Iridium makes me wonder if QA has slipped. If you think I am a hater I am not- I have an El Capistan, a Blue Sky, and a Sunset in my small-ish signal chain, along with the aforementioned pedals and power supply.

@BenWard293 жыл бұрын
Great sound! I was comparing it to my Magneto and it looks like the underlying hardware is identical (switches/knobs/buttons/jacks)- my experience in product design says that the board is probably identical as well- better to reuse a robust hardware platform, make a new front panel and spend all of your design time on the DSP/firmware. I know you guys would love to sell me one of these (and I would love to buy one!), but would there be any way to "demo" the unit by uploading it's firmware to my Magneto via USB? I understand why you would not want to "advertise" this feature but I am a man of limited means (and rack space). Would be a great option if possible.
@joshuaforbes19482 жыл бұрын
The circuitry is actually different for this product. The audio send/return of the Magneto went away. Also, the clock out circuitry was also replaced with CV inputs.
@BenWard292 жыл бұрын
@@joshuaforbes1948 Yes- I did see that- but depending on how the board is wired, it is possible to use relays or an analog switch to make these universally switchable inputs/outputs. I haven’t dissected my Magneto just yet, but if I was developing a board that I was intending to use for multiple product lines (future proofing) I might just do this to allow for reconfigurability. Also, I did check product images and the main control board is identical- the power, DSP and gpio- it’s from 2017 and both boards have the same revision (from my magneto board and the starlab pics on Strymon’s site). So if there is any difference, it’s in the accompanying analog board, and I would very much expect the analog board to be similar enough so that the 2 ins/outs you mentioned would not break the basic usability. You’d likely just lose those features.

I thought it might have been my long awaited Iridium 2....or new amp sims for the original Iridium cuz I love the Iridium so much but struggle with sparkly cleans and perhaps it could have an effects loop for delays or maybe just more headroom. They could also throw in a stellar looper and make it a larger format pedal...and maybe make it hugger orange with SS stripes. That's it. I just know that Strymon wants to do this for me (OK, us) and that's what makes Strymon great! Thx.
