It is crazy that we flew a vehicle like that to space (and back!) routinely. Its capabilities sound like sci fi these days. Of course, we paid dearly for it in dollars, lives, and lost progress. But it doesn't change how amazing a machine it was.

That was the most incredible space rescue mission when it came for the Hubble oh, it was beautiful it was work and space I mean real work you spent hours outside of the capsule

I remember when they added new Gyros, they replace the Widefield interplanetary camera, and the deep space camera oh, and the great thing about the Hubble is that it was scalable to a lot of the great with these replacements

Ever since I've played "Space Shuttle Simulator" the whole space thing has amazed me. I had no idea how space worked and they didn't teach me about any of this in school. I used to think the rocket went straight up and just floated there after a certain height. I find the whole orbit and rendezvous thing to be amazing. The fact that its possible to build a space craft that can move faster than gravity can pull it down makes me want to drop to my knees and cry.

I worked at the State Aeronautics Commission in Columbia SC and fortunate to meet and even talk to many astronauts. Bolden, Mc Nair, Col Duke to name a few. Their transportation of choice were T-38s which 1 out of 5 blew or flat spotted tires. Anyways, the one thing all would mention is just how busy their schedule in space is. Their schedule is literally filled and down to the minute. All wished they had more time to just stare at the earth. All I met here truly humble, proud and had "the right stuff."

Riskier and more expensive than a capsule but so much more capable. The Shuttle really was a cool piece of machinery and felt more like a real "spaceship" than just some pod you were crammed into until you got where you were going. Shame that it was statistically, a death trap, due to compromises and bureaucracy.

It was so much bigger than it needed to be. The payload bay was the size it was to accommodate DoD payloads and in the end the full size was only ever used once - for Hubble. And the best use of the shuttle, to retrieve and return to Earth satellites, was never utilized, AFAIK.

@@Tara19040 There were 5 satellites retrieved over 4 missions. 3 were long-term experiments, two were malfunctioning (both on STS-51-A). Four went up on the shuttle, but the last, the Japanese Space Flyer Unit, went up on a H-II because by then, it was cheaper.

The floating washers while gracefully exiting the shuttle bay, could be extremely serious if they are in the same orbit as the ISS. Fortunately the orbit will decay and burn up in the atmosphere.
