They were the greatest band ever to mount a stage. It was so special to see them up there--- comforting, reassuring, welcoming. A feeling flowed out like... "OK, We're all here now." Each one of them had a unique persona, stance, style, and sound which on a great night fitted perfectly together in some sense such as to create a great six piece three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle orb of sonic enlightenment and pleasure. A pleasure to hear, a pleasure to behold as they meshed. What a time is was. JA rule!

The Airplane had an absolutely unique sound. Really the were a supergroup with so many musical and songwriting talents melding. Grace Slick had a propensity for caterwauling in concert, but mostly it worked; their live shows were dynamic -- and unlike some of the Dead's catalog, their studio work was solid in its own right.

I was there that night. It was my 21st birthday. Grace wore a white "buckskin" sort of dress with fringes. She looked like an Indian princess. The Dead set was remarkable with (I think I have the night correct) a visit from Steve Stills.

Being old, for the most part, sucks balls but I am so grateful I was alive and able to appreciate the 60s, arguably the most amazing musical decade of the past century. From Motown (early 60s) to the Beatles/British invasion (early to mid 60s) and through the psychedelic explosion (mid to late 60s), talent and inspiration were wildly abundant.

I think the Seventies produced more great music and with more variety than the Sixties, which only really kicked off in 1963. I've lived through both decades. There is absolutely no doubt that both were way better than the Eighties.

I was also on the Jefferson Airplane/Starship band wagon for years, seeing them last in Rockefeller Center, at Radio City Music Hall. It was wow, wow. I was also a Grateful Dead freak. I still appreciate music from the 60's out of all music out there, with an eclectic array of musicians, from Leon Russel, James Taylor, to a few weeks ago I finally saw Emerson, Lake & Palmer, at Parker Playhouse, tastefully done with video inclusions of late Emerson, & Lake. Yes, Jack was the best, but world wide, not just Bay Area. He is the pinicle of royalty with ALL other bass players thousands of feet below him. To this day no bass player even comes close!!!! As for Spencer....... His stalattco style of using the entire drum kit has never been matched. With Spencer supplying the machine gun like rythem ON TIME, and sometimes ahead kept the band using all their creative skills to match / keep up with him. Ad the fully intentional bass lines and creschendos of Jack's bass...... and that was the true definition of what JA was all about. Even later when Spencer was with the Dinosaurs, his style kept that Superb Group in line...... I miss him and Marty so GD much..... 😢 PS I was there for that gig...... Priceless!!! Lest I emit the greatest male rock vocalist of all time, Marty Balin. Personally I love his voice and his style.. My entire life I tried hard to sing just like him.... and I reached that goal. On stage Marty was the definition of cool..... RIP my friend...

I was at this show- the only time that Bill Graham experimented with each band doing 1 long set instead of 2- (dubbed early & late show, even though 1 ticket allowed you to see both if you arrived early)- fabulous show- the Sons rocked it as the opening act. Awesome Martha- best ever! And of course there's Jack.... who rocked it all night like no other!

Kaukonen was very good, but a bit limited - not enough dynamic range (not enough soft moments to balance loud ones). This limitation is even more problematic in Kaukonen's solo and duo acoustic playing. Hendrix, though great, had the same limitation. Contrast Kaukonen with Richard Thompson, who is actually better on acoustic than on electric, with which Thompson "noodles" too much. I'm still waiting for Hot Tuna to play electric in Chicago again, because I've never heard Casady live on his fantastic electric bass.

This is a fantastic concert recording, capturing the Airplane at their peak. Everyone shines here. The Dead put on a fine, typical '69 performance at this show (DS>SS>11>Lovelight), but I believe the Airplane outshone them this night.

Sorry, no video equipment in 1969 existed that could capture these indoor concert low light conditions. It was even early for reasonably portable pro quality audio. Expect this was t a k e n off the mixing board. Those of us who heard them won't forget either the sights or sounds
