In the real case, Loeb was similarly apathetic and more dedicated to the thrill of killing than his lover, and Leopold simply loved Loeb. Leopold and Loeb hatched a plan to commit the "perfect crime." It was not so much the idea of murder that attracted them, but the idea of getting away with murder. I urge any fan of true crime to research the case. It's an incredibly interesting one.

No no no. This was all part of Billy's plan. I believe that Billy never intended to let Stu live. His plan was to kill Stu and be the sole surviour. He's not stupid to let Stu off alive, given how Stu is tactless and would probably blab their secret at some point. Since Stu is also an intended victim, why wait to stab him ? Stu is just Stupid with a capital S and just laps up whatever Billy tells him. So when Billy tells him "I stab you first", Stu agrees.
