Fabulous! I find Orch-OR sounding very plausible to my ears. Great conversation! So the bottomline could be this(?): Orch-OR says that the collapse of the wavefunction happens 1st of all, because spacetime is quantized like all other physical phenomena and those quantum "chunks" are basically defined by the Planck length, the Planck length as a restraint for the conditions that are present. So when entangled particles need to "decide" on "which end of the Planck length they need to "show up", that's when the wavefunction collapses. Understood (I hope). And when it does (collapse), that is what Hameroff-Penrose coined "proto consciousness" - an event that provides a potential for consciousness, but goes "unregistered" as no sentient being is "around to witness" the collapse, something like that? And hence no "qualia". Then, as soon as sentience enters the picture - i.e. complex biology with a nervous system that grew to sport a neocortex which is capable of very complex computation - those conscious moments are associated with sensory perception, the sensory perception is rendered into an experience, upon which the neocortices'' "CPU" can reflect and process it ad infinitum, voilà: Conscious Awareness! Like that? Fine by me, so far. However, it seems as if ideas of "soul", "spirituality" and such ideations then aren't supported - or at the very least not addressed by Orch-OR, which I can understand. That's not what it is about or was intended to comment on. But essentially it would then follow that qualia require at the least a complex nervous system, which provides the capacity to have sentience. No biology, no sentience, no sentience, no qualia and no conscious awareness. (?) I'd love to have someone's input on this, if so inclined. Thank you. Great interview. Max Tagmark (MIT) in a debate with Hameroff presented and proved mathematically that decoherence would not allow for microtubules to incorporate quantum mechanics. As far as I know, the Hameroff / Penrose paper has been considered debunked by the physics community. I also read somewhere that Hameroff and Tagmark had lunch together and by the end, Hameroff couldn’t disagreed with the math.

@@Ascendlocal Tegmark published a critique of Orch OR based on his calculated decoherence times for microtubules of seconds at biological temperature, far too brief for physiological effects. However Tegmark didn't include Orch OR stipulations and in essence created, and then refuted his own quantum microtubule model. He assumed superpositions of solitons separated from themselves by a distance of 24 nanometers along the length of the microtubule. As previously described, superposition separation in Orch OR is at the Fermi length level of atomic nuclei, i.e. 7 orders of magnitude smaller than Tegmark's separation value, thus underestimating decoherence time by 7 orders of magnitude, i.e. from 10 (to the)-13 to microseconds at 10 (to the) -6 seconds. Hagan used Tegmark's same formula and recalculated microtubule decoherence times using Orch OR stipulations, finding 10 (to the -4) to 10 (to the - 3) seconds, or longer. In any case, experimentally, Bandyopadhyay's group has found 10 kHz resonance, i.e. seconds coherence times. Also, as stated earlier, there are versions of the beat-frequency scheme that would require much shorter decoherence times, though at the expense of correspondingly larger bodies of material being involved in the quantum-coherent states.

Regardless of the specific mechanism, whether it be mediated by microtubules or not. In fact, I am willing to go much further down that line of reasoning, to multiversal superposition and entanglement of minds with other versions of self. Unfortunately, the only information, or data that could most probably be recovered, may be subjective qualia recorded through dreams. At least until there exists a true brain/machine interface, and even then, real objective data may be elusive.

I have seen and experienced too much to ever believe that consciousness is confined to the brain. I just can't. There is literally no way of explaining countless phenomena I have experienced unless consciousness is fundamental.

Can you briefly elaborate on just a few of those experiences? I am on the fence as to whether consciousness is actually anything other than something happening in and among brain cells of life forms. I can think of no experience I've had or that I've heard described that can't come down to what is going on in (still) living brain cells. But that's just me and perhaps I am 'finding ways' to interpret things to suit my preconceived notions. But if consciousness if fundamental, what does that say about the suffering and misfortune that (I think, at least) is happening out there in the 'real' world that is NOT due to someone's or something's thoughts? What does it mean for any kind of serendipitous and unfortunate outcome? If consciousness IS fundamental, what is causing things if not the very consciousness that is fundamental?

@@legionreaver I didn't say anything about determinism. But how can you (or anyone else) tell that the choices in the tests weren't determined? I watched some donald hoffman. Nothing he said contradicted what I said about consciousness going on in the brain. My description is as good a 'hack' as anything else, so it works...like us all being cognizant of fast moving trains or high cliffs. Of course the reality...whatever it is...isn't literally a fast moving train or a high cliff or thought going on in literal brain cells, but us perceiving whatever we're perceiving...me perceiving that thought goes on in the brain..works well enough for us to survive...ie avoid the effects that ignoring whatever it is that makes us think we're seeing a fast moving train would cause. Because if we ignore it...whatever the reality is...it will result in us being affected in a way that will result in something like death...whatever that is. If we ignore the idea, the hack, that thought goes on in the brain and casually/inadvertently destroy the brain...just like jumping off the cliff, whatever those things actually represent will have a result that will be tantamount to ending those thoughts. Nothing he said was a surprise to me...I've known for years that our 'perceptions' are made up illusions...hacks, if you will, that aid in survival. So what?

I have something inexplicable by traditional medicine called _kundalini syndrome,_ a constant churning of energy that causes pressure in my head, swirling in my heart and churning in my gut. It's awful. (ChatGPT describes it much better than Wikipedia.) It is well-understood in the Eastern traditions as a disorder of the subtle body, the energy body. Now, one could argue that I am manifesting something that is a disorder of my nervous system. And the nervous system and the subtle body are intertwined, so I would understand that viewpoint. When my nervous system is agitated due to anxiety or whatever, my kundalini syndrome kicks up. But here's where it gets interesting. I was losing my mind due to this crazy disorder and the constant pounding, and after some googling I found a healer who lives 400 miles away who is able to 'see' my energy body from a distance and clean up and balance my energy, so that the kundalini calms down. He can do this at any time, and I can tell when he is doing it even when I don't know the time of day he is working on me. I feel more relaxed and the pounding energy quiets. There have been many instances where I was trying to sleep and could not until literally the minute he started his work, and suddenly it felt like a tire deflating as my energy sorted itself out. You could argue that this is the greatest case of placebo healing known to Man, but it would not explain why I know when he is doing his work even if he hasn't told me, and it would also require recourse to a level of placebo effect that is staggeringly high. I have been so wigged out on pounding energy that I could not even go to the bathroom, and then after an hour I would feel so relaxed I was fast asleep. So how is this even possible, if consciousness is only local? How can someone 400 miles away who I've never met manage to do this? I've also had many other experiences of being helped by energy healers, like after the horrifying psychedelic trip that started all of this (instances of kundalini syndrome and other energetic disorders are rising in the West partly for this reason, and partly due to improper meditation techniques), and I became depersonalized, constantly spaced-out. The energy healer was able to fix that by 'pulling me back into my body' so to speak. I'll answer the rest when I'm less tired, lol.

Self-illusion or thinking is like a transparent curtain that adds an extra layer of information to our vision, we see our thoughts but they do not exist in front of us! This is the human ability to see things that do not exist! The problem that occurs in humans is that, when the nervous system contracts, the thinking process automatically begins to think! And because most people have more or less nervous system contractions, they have this extra thought! And in the long run, these thoughts almost become an additional operating system, and it makes its own decisions! Every identity theory, whether it's neurons or quantum reduction you identify with blueness, can just be accpeted, but not really grasped. It's still not obvious that quantum reduction *is* the same thing as blueness for example. They didn't came to that conclusion because it's so naturally obvious that quantum reduction and qualia are the same things, but because they needed some physical candidate to identify qualia with. They worked according to the process of elimination and excluded all the physical correlates until one was left which they hold the most probable one. So it wasn't because of real, deep understanding.

If consciousness is a human phenomena, whereas consciousness is not developed the same by each individual, how can we talk about other conscious beings, when we don't even know the emergence of our consciousness. I know that consciousness can be trained to higher possibilities, it's the continuous experience that feeds the correlation between brain and consciousness, provided the quality of the brain. If consciousness never emerged in humans, we would just live a life like animals, without suffering to know where we come from, and where the whole universe came from, it's us the only conscious beings that build stories about us and what our imaginations throw in the scene. Each one creates a mentality due to his education and inheritance, all other changes are the natural consequence of evolutionary adaptation, be it positive or negative. We talk about consciousness as if everyone has the same conscious potential, but as we can observe, it is not the case. In the future we'll have some advanced civilization groups, due to the evolving conscious experience.

My new understandings of what many call 'God' - resulting from some of the extraordinary ongoing after-effects relating to my NDE... Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what some scientists are now referring to as the unified field of consciousnesses. In other words, it’s the essence of all existence and non-existence - the ultimate creative force behind planets, stars, nebulae, people, animals, trees, fish, birds, and all phenomena, manifest or latent. All matter and intelligence are simply waves or ripples manifesting to and from this core source. Consciousness (enlightenment) is itself the actual creator of everything that exists now, ever existed in the past, or will exist in the future - right down to the minutest particles of dust - each being an individual ripple or wave. The big difference between chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo and most other conventional prayers is that instead of depending on a ‘middleman’ to connect us to our state of inner enlightenment, we’re able to do it ourselves. That’s because chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo allows us to tap directly into our enlightened state by way of this self-produced sound vibration. ‘Who or What Is God?’ If we compare the concept of God being a separate entity that is forever watching down on us, to the teachings of Nichiren, it makes more sense to me that the true omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence of what most people perceive to be God, is the fantastic state of enlightenment that exists within each of us. Some say that God is an entity that’s beyond physical matter - I think that the vast amount of information continuously being conveyed via electromagnetic waves in today’s world gives us proof of how an invisible state of God could indeed exist. For example, it’s now widely known that specific data relayed by way of electromagnetic waves has the potential to help bring about extraordinary and powerful effects - including an instant global awareness of something or a mass emotional reaction. It’s also common knowledge that these invisible waves can easily be used to detonate a bomb or to enable NASA to control the movements of a robot as far away as the Moon or Mars - none of which is possible without a receiver to decode the information that’s being transmitted. Without the receiver, the data would remain impotent. In a very similar way, we need to have our own ‘receiver’ switched on so that we can activate a clear and precise understanding of our own life, all other life and what everything else in existence is. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day helps us to achieve this because it allows us to reach the core of our enlightenment and keep it switched on. That’s because Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what scientists now refer to as the unified field of consciousnesses. To break it down - Myoho represents the Law of manifestation and latency (Nature) and consists of two alternating states. For example, the state of Myo is where everything in life that’s not obvious to us exists - including our stored memories when we’re not thinking about them - our hidden potential and inner emotions whenever they’re dormant - our desires, our fears, our wisdom, happiness, karma - and more importantly, our enlightenment. The other state, ho, is where everything in Life exists whenever it becomes evident to us, such as when a thought pops up from within our memory - whenever we experience or express our emotions - or whenever a good or bad cause manifests as an effect from our karma. When anything becomes apparent, it merely means that it’s come out of the state of Myo (dormancy/latency) and into a state of ho (manifestation). It’s the difference between consciousness and unconsciousness, being awake or asleep, or knowing and not knowing. The second law - Renge - Ren meaning cause and ge meaning effect, governs and controls the functions of Myoho - these two laws of Myoho and Renge, not only function together simultaneously but also underlies all spiritual and physical existence. The final and third part of the tri-combination - Kyo, is the Law that allows Myoho to integrate with Renge - or vice versa. It’s the great, invisible thread of energy that fuses and connects all Life and matter - as well as the past, present and future. It’s also sometimes termed the Universal Law of Communication - perhaps it could even be compared with the string theory that many scientists now suspect exists. Just as the cells in our body, our thoughts, feelings and everything else is continually fluctuating within us - all that exists in the world around us and beyond is also in a constant state of flux - constantly controlled by these three fundamental laws. In fact, more things are going back and forth between the two states of Myo and ho in a single moment than it would ever be possible to calculate or describe. And it doesn’t matter how big or small, famous or trivial anything or anyone may appear to be, everything that’s ever existed in the past, exists now or will exist in the future, exists only because of the workings of the Laws ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ - the basis of the four fundamental forces, and if they didn’t function, neither we nor anything else could go on existing. That’s because all forms of existence, including the seasons, day, night, birth, death and so on, are moving forward in an ongoing flow of continuation - rhythmically reverting back and forth between the two fundamental states of Myo and ho in absolute accordance with Renge - and by way of Kyo. Even stars are dying and being reborn under the workings of what the combination ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ represents. Nam, or Namu - which mean the same thing, are vibrational passwords or keys that allow us to reach deep into our life and fuse with or become one with ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’. On a more personal level, nothing ever happens by chance or coincidence, it’s the causes that we’ve made in our past, or are presently making, that determine how these laws function uniquely in each of our lives - as well as the environment from moment to moment. By facing east, in harmony with the direction that the Earth is spinning, and chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo for a minimum of, let’s say, ten minutes daily to start with, any of us can experience actual proof of its positive effects in our lives - even if it only makes us feel good on the inside, there will be a definite positive effect. That’s because we’re able to pierce through the thickest layers of our karma and activate our inherent Buddha Nature (our enlightened state). By so doing, we’re then able to bring forth the wisdom and good fortune that we need to challenge, overcome and change our adverse circumstances - turn them into positive ones - or manifest and gain even greater fulfilment in our daily lives from our accumulated good karma. This also allows us to bring forth the wisdom that can free us from the ignorance and stupidity that’s preventing us from accepting and being proud of the person that we indeed are - regardless of our race, colour, gender or sexuality. We’re also able to see and understand our circumstances and the environment far more clearly, as well as attract and connect with any needed external beneficial forces and situations. As I’ve already mentioned, everything is subject to the law of Cause and Effect - the ‘actual-proof-strength’ resulting from chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo always depends on our determination, sincerity and dedication. For example, the levels of difference could be compared to making a sound on a piano, creating a melody, producing a great song, and so on. Something else that’s very important to always respect and acknowledge is that the Law (or if you prefer God) is in everyone and everything. NB: There are frightening and disturbing sounds, and there are tranquil and relaxing sounds. It’s the emotional result of any noise or sound that can trigger off a mood or even instantly change one. When chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day, we are producing a sound vibration that’s the password to our true inner-self - this soon becomes apparent when you start reassessing your views on various things - such as your fears and desires etc. The best way to get the desired result when chanting is not to view things conventionally - rather than reaching out to an external source, we need to reach into our own lives and bring our needs and desires to fruition from within - including the good fortune and strength to achieve any help that we may need. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo also reaches out externally and draws us towards, or draws towards us, what we need to make us happy from our environment. For example, it helps us to be in the right place at the right time - to make better choices and decisions and so forth. We need to think of it as a seed within us that we’re watering and bringing sunshine to for it to grow, blossom and bring forth fruit or flowers. It’s also important to understand that everything we need in life, including the answer to every question and the potential to achieve every dream, already exists within us. This is a desperate attempt to pretend to understand consciousness, like when you try to understand space and time, at the end you feel you don't understand anything. Our senses doesn't guarantee that our experience is true, similarly consciousness also fails to guarantee anything, because true reality is not fixed.

It seems problematic to say that consciousness is merely a product of complexity, that it comes into being. The physics of the very small and the very large both need "magic" to explain how consciousness could come into existence if such a property (consciousness) were not inherent to whatever comprises the universe.

A well presented programme a Lawrence very much on the ball. What Stuart does not explain is how consciousness continues after death in near death experiences and also how does reincarnation work. There are many convincing cases of the latter, where I could point to certain cases if this site permitted such links. Well Stuart look at some of these cases of NDE's etc and explain how a purely physical explanation works, I am all ears.

ORCH OR actually is one of the few theories of consciousness that could explain those phenomenae. Non-locality and entanglement could allow a conscious quantum system to go on as the body (along with the microtubules) fades. Please look into that. Google is curiosity's best friend.

Here we go again. Some aspects of quantum mechanics are not understood, some parts of consciousness are not understood....so let us connect them. The word Quantum is a favorite of many of these theories. It seems to have some kind of magic associated with it. Just like calling a wine Champagne makes it more expensive. I think this comes from the original word observer used by early quantum physicists in the context of quantum function collapse. Then, maybe, the thought of observer was to mean a conscious entity. Modern quantum physics does not require observers to be conscious. Instead, it can be any macroscopic apparatus, e.g. a camera will do. And the camera is not conscious. All of chemistry is based on quantum mechanics. And this includes all the chemistry that occurs in the brain. And the same is true of chemistry in microtubules. This shift happened when the solar system model of the atom was replaced by the probability wave-based electron cloud model of the atom. It is all based on quantum mechanics. So what is the big deal about microtubules? Calling it "objective collapse" has the same Hollywood-like ring to it - remember flux capacitor, phasor gun? And even if there was some "objective collapse" happens how does that help with any explanation of consciousness. According to early quantum theory proponents (which is no longer a prevalent view in modern physics), consciousness causes the collapse of the wave function. But Stuart's theory is other way around, the "objective collapse" in microtubules causes consciousness. Backwards? The problem happens because there is a thought that consciousness is a thing. it is not a thing. It is a collective name for a class of phenomena we conventionally call conscious. Stop looking for consciousness as a thing or a substance. Just like the fuzzy-at-the-edges concept of the visible spectrum of light, consciousness phenomena are fuzzy at the edges. It is a matter of degree. IMO proto-consciousness does not make sense. More conscious, less conscious is the more correct way to talk about it.

Once sentience existed, Existence learns that animals with higher brain function have a better survival rate than lesser intelligent species. Fast forward to _Homo sapiens_ and Existence now experiences intelligent humans using their intelligence to increase their own intelligence. That's new data! That is why humans are proudly perched at the top of the food chain ... even over the bigger, stronger, and faster species. That's also why we rank higher than slugs in regard to our existence. We are the ones cranking out the highest levels of data. *Note:* This is based only on what is currently supported by science. I personally believe intelligent life exists outside of our planet, but I cannot use that in my arguments because this still remains unknown. Even if we aren't the most intelligent species in the universe, the process is still the same.

Man is indeed self centered & selfish And we have known for over 2000 years, why Man does what Man does. Thought,, ideas, beliefs, reasoning/deduction, logic, objectivity, ethics, theories ... are all ABSTRACT constructs from an intelligence with free will. Purpose, meaning, design, rules/laws, properties, data, information, knowledge .... are all ABSTRACT constructs from an intelligence with free will. Anything that has a purpose, rules, properties & information that can be used by an intelligence with free will ..... is MADE by an intelligence with free will. Existence is both Abstract & Physical ... and revolves completely around an intelligence with free will. Everything is an ABSTRACT ( time, space, Laws of Nature ) or PHYSICAL ( matter, energy) Function with purpose, rules & properties .... made UNNATURALLY by an intelligence with free will.
