Thanks for sharing this. Your use of the parfilm and cap plastic, here, is brilliant. Do you recall if you used the acetone solved plastic, or the alcohol solved? I'm not sure it matters, because of the epoxy parfulm. Just curious. Until now I had never actually considered the occasional usefulness of painting the sculpture before it's been moulded, but I do see how that can be useful in certain circumstances. Very cool. Just a side note: Over the past few years, I've learned a great deal from you and Todd. Although we've never personally met, I have a huge amount of respect, appreciation, and gratitude for you both. Thank you, (and Todd, both) for your respective contributions in helping me to become a better artist. 🌻

What an amazing video! Can i ask what is the hardness of the clay you are working with? It looks like this would work better with a leather hard consistency.

It is 55 grade - which is hard to quantify. It softens with heat and hardens when cold so keep a hairdryer and a can of plumbers freezing spray to affect the changes you require.

Ahoyhoy! I have been an through a house fire when I was 3,due to being" gifted" with the ability to reminisce something that early has made it impossible to work with any tool that produces fire or heat. I have always been a 1987 kid but am trapped in a mortifying modern time. I would give my soul to the devil himself just to be able to bring back animatronics from the 60s - 80s and have a g3 powermac computer in my home right now. I've always adored and grew fascinated with animatronics science I was about 4! I wish I could give up my memory for the ability to work on these majestic pieces of equipment but I guess I'll never follow my heart.

Plastiline like Chavant or Monster clay is best. As to plaster - there are better materials than plaster but in the UK, Crystacal R is good and the US its Ultracal 30.

What’s the name of that liquid clay that you are using??! Where can I find it and the syringe used to apply it??

At 9:50 I show the liquid clay being made. It's plastiline mixed with lighter fluid. If you Google 'syringe supplier' I'm sure you'll find a laboratory equipment stockist that supplies needles and syringes. Don't get too narrow a needle as this is a thicker liquid and we are not looking for painless injection. I'd say a mixing needle is the size you want, maybe half a millimetre to a millimetre inside bore.

When colouring the sculpt after with bald cap, could you do this with latex also? or would it damage the sculpt for moulding?

Latex itself doesn't actually damage the sculpt. However, if you intend to mould this and make silicone appliances then you many find the latex may still leave some residue of sulphur which can prevent silicone from setting properly. It is known as 'inhibition' and latex is commonly used in FX. As a result it usually need to be kept away from anything that involves silicone. For example I no longer even use latex gloves as touching moulds with them could cause the silicone to inhibit.

Car Body Filler for repairing dents and damage to car bodies. You'll get it in auto repair shops. Brands include Bondo in the US, Isopon P38 in the uk.

Román Kampelmacher It's a Grex, but there are many brands that don't have a top trigger. This is a pistol grip, which is rather more comfortable and used in all the airbrushes and spray guns for tanning and painting cars in the body shop. You can hold it for hours comfortably.

Oh I see it melts when heated by a torch. WED clay would do dry up and stiffen instead.

Thanks. Nope, plastiline. Oil based ckays, usually used for appliances because water based clays will dry and shrink when sculpting thin things with fine edges. Chavant and Monster Clay are common in the States, in Europe these are popular also but I also like Plastiline by a company called J. HERBIN based on France which have been involved with waxes etc for about 300 years!

Not sure what you mean, I suppose if you warm the plastiline then to some degree it can be smoothed using plastic. I'd still need tools for the rest of the sculpting.

@@stuartbray I mean like if cling flim was on the clay etc then, u used like a bit of pipe etc, with no clay etc shape in it, so when u push down on the cling film using the bit of pipe etc, it might also push on the cling film to make round edges on the clay etc, altho it might need to be thicker material than cling film maybe.

I use oil based clay known as plastiline. There are a few brands, including Monster Clay and Chavant.

I think i's the same, but for some reason, the oily component gets absorbed into the mold material and messes with the curing.

Do you men the plastiline absorbs into the plaster cast on which you are sculpting? And also that the surface of the silicone mould or appliance made from it is tacky or not setting properly? That sounds like inhibition, where the process of the two silicone components 'crosslinking' is compromised. It may be due to sulphur being in the plastiline. There are 'sulphur free' plastilines like Chavant which are better for use where silicone is involved.

stuart bray Yes and yes, and the same with polyester mould, i also tried to use a thin layer of liquid latex, but it turns into goo if i leave it for more than two or three days, i think i will have to use regular clay, even if i can't recycle it.

where did you get this plasticine and what grade is it/

it's by a French company called J.Herbin. It's 55grade and I like the grey although they also make an ivory colour too. That shows up every bit of grease and dirt so I don't usually ever use the Ivory!

No, but I did apply cap plastic before painting it so it could be peeled off afterwards to mould. It's at 11:30

Nope. This is just the sculpt. It needs moulding and then casting out appliances from that mould using silicone.

Yup, its just like clay but oil based. You can buy different types and they have different softnesses depending on your preference. In the UK its cold more than it is warm so I use a softer grade than if it were 90 degrees outside 70% of the year.
