I finished the 4th episode of Years and Years late at night 23rd February at my flat in Kyiv, thinking exactly the same: "oh god I can't wait to finish watching it, this shit is too dark for me". Guess what - next day my world got as dark as it gets. Now, almost 2 months later, I finally managed to finish the last two episodes, and then I watched your review - thank god it exists, it made me laugh and smile, and your cat is absolutely adorable. Hugs from Ukaine

I think we need shows like this. Bad dystopian fiction is "Humans are monsters and everything is shit and will always be shit look how edgy n dark we are" while good dystopia stuff is "This could be the future if we don't wake up and course correct! This is a warning of the world we don't want to move towards."

And accusing the media to lie about her. She wanted to cut all ties with other countries, therefore the country was going downhill (everything gets more expensive etc.). No control over population, criminalizing certain areas, because they are poor. Oh and don’t forget that they shat on the housing problem and not helping survivors of floods etc. (because they don’t give a f. about the people) and that’s why many people were homeless. I was just pleased that there was a show worth discussing at the moment. With so much junk on television at the moment, from reality shows to pointless political pissing contests, it's refreshing to find a show that actually prompts some degree of thought, one that stimulates ideas rather than strives to numb them. I was curious to see just how far it would go, and whether any interesting twists would come about at the end. But perhaps one of the biggest talking points about Years and Years is its "it couldn't happen here" rhetoric. We've often prided ourselves on being a tolerant nation, Britain likes to think that of itself, given how it won the second world war, but there is a prevailing blind arrogance behind it - that we couldn't get roped into the kind of fascism we saw in the 1930's and 1940's, because we fought it off, and it has created the idea that we "don't do fascism" in the UK, even though it has started to creep into politics. The character of Vivienne Rook exists to demonstrate that - all it takes is a tragedy, and suddenly a desperate people, once proud but now declining, find her words alluring. And yes, it could happen here, it could very much happen here, we have the kind of pride that makes us very susceptible to falling into these traps - even one of the characters justifies some of their actions, claiming we don't hear of the atrocities because "they worked", rather than maybe thinking we don't know them because of the concept of exceptionalism and shame; if all it takes is just some attitude that we can do no wrong to erase our misdeeds from the history books, then we're royally screwed. Also Spoiler Alert below: If they do a second series, then I don't think it will continue on with the Lyons family; their story is pretty much told at this point. Rather, I think it will continue from after Vivienne's arrest, but following another family, and the problems they face could be the consequences of Erstwhile. Because the consequences didn't simply end with the sites going up in flames, you have the survivors, relatives of lost ones, and those who were either wilfully complicit or were "just following orders". I mean, in the final episode Mrs Rook is arrested, but someone else, a lookalike, is in her cell. Simply arresting her wouldn't have ended the problem, she was just a figurehead and an outlet, allowing the truly despicable people to be emboldened enough to emerge from the shadows, and no doubt there will some taking the possible conspiracy theories and turning her into a martyr or an idol. It may take some years to finally quell that kind of monstrous ideology.

Stubagful honestly I've been feeling the same. When the "whotubers" (I actually hate that term and want to burn it) I watch talk about the really extreme and abusive comments that they see across the fandom I kinda thought it was a bit of a exudation. I watched another video that disagreed with but that was mainly because he wanted things to go back to how things were in the Russel era. Went down into the comments and oh my giddy fuck. Someone was saying that the BBC are anti white, strait, men, which I think we can all agree is arse gravy. He (and I'm assuming he) then went on to say that this could be seen within the daleks as they are a negative representation of white strait men. And the BBC use nazis as a propaganda tool to keep them down. My left tit has just lactated a substantial preparation of self righteous flavoured milk.

I remember when I was a kid, growing up in "Reagan's America", during the last decade of the Cold War, there was a sub-genre of sorts, of T.V. movies and feature films, themed around "what if a nuclear war happened... like, right now". I could never watch these shows. The reality of a nuclear confrontation between the U.S./N.A.T.O. and the Soviet Union/Warsaw Pact wasn't merely theoretical, but was something that could have happened at any moment, on any given day. In fact, such a confrontation nearly did occur, more than once, during the 1980's. That "reality of possibility" made it impossible for me to watch such media (and I could never understand how anyone else could), so I never watched any of that stuff, until well-after the Cold War ended, and even then, not really. I kind'a imagine that's what this show is like, and the discomfort you describe sounds a lot like the discomfort I used to feel. Still, it sound like it's well-made, I generally liked Russell's stuff, and looks like it has a solid cast. So I think I'll try to overcome my overwhelming sense of existential dread, and give it a watch.

@@dbadagnaif you haven’t learnt in the last few months, it is the 11th episode of the fourth series of Doctor Who (after it came back in 2005). The episode was written by then showrunner, Russell T. Like Years and Years, the episode focuses on an alternate timeline where the character Donna never meets the Doctor, and thus the Doctor dies and the whole world (Britain at least) gets a bit messed up over the course of a few years.

I know the show got better but I couldn't keep watching after the 'trans-human' subplot was introduced. We're just not there yet. There is already SO MUCH misinformation around actual trans experiences that to riff on it for your sci-fi show that implies that this is the logical next step is really not brilliant

I watched the first episode but clicked off because I realised it just wasn’t good for me. I’ve been trying to work my way out of despair and nihilism for a while now and that show was like all my expelled anxiety concentrated and force fed back into me. So yeah, I’ll pass.

This is not the review I was expecting. I've been watching less of your content because you seem to have a much higher tolerance for horror and creepy stuff than I do. You've been more disappointed with Doctor Who because it wasn't allowed to go this far under Moffat and Chibnall, you've been making those Class videos I can't handle, you have no problem with Black Mirror... but *this* is too much for you? Colour me surprised. Years and Years is so grounded and banal, it almost allows me to connect with and understand the scary future shit. I'd like to imagine that if you took someone from 2004 and showed them today, they'd also be frightened, but there's something uncanny valley about this series that reminds me it's all just drama. Fiction. It's a very British way of doing science fiction: what if today, but worse? Idk, maybe it seems less scary to me because I live on the continent and RTD's dystopian Europe aligns more closely with the skewed British perception of Europe than reality. Same with China and America. There was a time I was afraid Trump might nuke somebody -- the first two weeks after he got elected. Then I realized it's not that simple. Even if he gets re-elected (and he will), it's not the end of the world. It's just America stabbing itself in the foot, as usual. Also, Stu: I'd like to see your review of Turn Left (or other classic Who stuff). I bet you'd have an interesting take on it.

I love how RT refers to his time on doctor who in 2008 as being when everything was nice n jolly then when he left everything went to shit. Very politically aggravated rant below. This is just my opinion and I am only 17 and go to a art college. This show makes me more angry than depressed. It's not that I don't find it depressing but it's more that I'm a liberal teen that feels let down and alienated by the current state of the left wing movement. I know that the more angry side if the right use the term "libtard" as a petty argument tactic instead of actually arguing like a adult but i spent the hole time watching this having imaginary arguments with people I don't agree with and losing because they ,and by extension myself keep on calling me, call me over emotional and stupid. I know this is incredibly self destructive of me and should be thinking about your cat instead. But literally every point that was raised in the program I sat there having a inner argument with some binary brained bigot that is of my own fabrication. "For god sake sam just look at the bigger picture" when they say that they don't mean be grateful for what we have and would it be that catastrophic if we aloud in more asylum seekers instead they go on to say what right do they have? Other than the human right to free movement and shelter? Whats ironic now is I am binariesing (yes that is a word shut up) the right which shows my ignorance! Something I find quite reassuring is listening to people with apposing views that articulate them in a way that I tolerate. It's a bit like when your parents tell you to pretend that your vegetables are chocolate. Or watching Boris Johnson on have I got news for you. God this show must be brilliant otherwise we wouldn't be getting so angry over this.

Grow up kid! Come be a conservative! Just kidding, I am actually a 20 year old socialist(profice pic is fake due to boredom) so I am kind of in the same position as you in life. Although I am angrier at the right wing movement than the left wing one cause I am hard left-I agree that even if it's not indicative of reality, I engage in a hypothetical discussion in order to understand the other party-However, time and time again, I arrive at the conclusion that I am right and they're wrong then I carry on with whatever the fuck I was doing. Also, does it really take someone imaginary person to say you're "emotional and stupid" to lose an argument? With all due respect, I don't think you should concede so easily. But I do in fact listen to real opposing ideas (mostly from the right) at youtube and reading secondary literature and I am still not convinced by them. Unfortunately, I haven't seen the show so apologies if I have gone off topic. Will the show be worth watching for lefties like me?

Craydog Doctordroobe give a go I thought it was amazing. It just tackles some really heavy subjects that I feel very passionately about like immigration and so on. The show perfectly articulates my feelings which courses me and my over active imagination to imagine someone disagreeing with the show which then leads to me having a internal argument that I can't win. Still if you have been blessed with a brain that can't out smart or stupid you then definitely give it a go it's amazing!!!

@@craydogdog1530 The problem is that mindset you have of anyone on the right is evil is wrong, most people on the right are like most on the left are, normal people. They want jobs, peace and believe in human rights. The far right are a small group no one cares about, the same with the far left, yes they do exist. Don't pretend the Left does not have extremes on it's side as well. It is actually dangerous for a political system or a democracy to only have one party or side in it, look at China,North Korea and Soviet Union even modern Russia.
