Flat Face male coupling seal replacement

Hello, I have a few questions. The old seals consisted of U Teflon and O-ring. But the new Teflon is flat and different. What is the difference between old and new sealing? Another question I have is, if I put the backup ring, which is used as a new backup ring, in the back instead of the front, what would be the problem? Because I can use the product in different flow direction. Socket-to-plug or plug-to-socket. Thank you.
