As a rule, Ole Kirk “won’t” spread this Ekoplast 50 without adding or using the calcium formate as an accelerator, as Ole Kirk does not have the patience to sit around and wait.
I wait for no plaster or stucco to set. Thus, We dictate the dry time using accelerators.
But I suggest the average person apply a basecoat, then apply a finish coat on a separate or later day.
Ekoplast 50 is a Heat-insulating Plaster, Lightweight/Micro-glass Polymer Modified, Mold and Mildew Resistant, Class 1 Fireproof, Exterior or Interior, Sound Dampening, and has a few other benefits. However, it’s produced and used primarily in Europe; thus, it may cost more as it has to be shipped to the USA.
First, if you do this, clean the bricks. Note that no bonding agent, cement board, or even stucco netting or wiring is necessary; that would be counterproductive.
Nothing adheres longer or tighter than a natural mechanical bond.
If the bricks or blocks are painted, apply a bonding agent like Larson's "Weld-Crete" or "Quikrete." This is called a chemical bond, which also permanently adheres new stucco to painted surfaces.
That means the bricks are porous when a wet cementitious product is applied or spread; it bonds instantly and permanently.
If interested in this Ekoplaster-50 plaster, call my pal, Hickman, at (760) 801-8239

What timing . I have an ugly brick fireplace that needs covering up. This is exactly what it needs. Only difference is my brick is a chipped brick surface so it’s REAL uneven and very deep mortar joints. Guess that means I have to probly do two base coats then a top coat with the lime. Thanks for the how to !!! Now I gotta fine that chem Tex here in ohio.@@StuccoPlastering

It’s interesting how things are done differently in different places. In England, we would put the beads on, put the base coat on and leave about 2-3mm of the bead showing which leaves room for the finishing coat to fill the bead in plum. Regardless great job Kirk, looks spot on

Hi Kirk. I have enjoyed your videos for years now, and I think it’s awesome that you share so much important info to weekend warriors like myself that will try to take on just about any project we think we can do as well as the pros like yourself that have been refining your knowledge and skills for decades. I have a request that I haven’t seen you present in one of your videos yet. You did something similar in a video several years ago, but not quite the same pattern as what I am needing help with. I live in South, and I have an early 1800s stucco over brick home. Two hundred years ago when the stucco was applied to my house, the stucco was ever so slightly etched to give it the appearance of I believe it’s called ashlar. The etching is so slight that you can barely feel it with your hand, but it’s there ever so slightly enough that a pattern is there if you look closely. I’ve seen this same pattern on part of thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, and a just a few other old homes over the years. I am in Tennessee, and I can’t find ANYONE with knowledge of how to do this. Through lots of years and talking to lots of contractors, I’m afraid this is an all but lost art (in Tennessee anyway) and you are probably one of the few artists that is capable of replicating something like this….I would appreciate any info or contacts you might have in the this side of the continent that could give me some guidance/help in finding someone…..and THANK YOU if you read all of this…..I tend to babble. 😂😂 PS Only a small portion of my house still has this original stucco and pattern remaining, and you can well imagine that parts of it need repairing, and I really would like to do it just like it was done originally.

Evening Debbie, the fastest and easiest would be to use a twenty-minute joint compound. That's actually taping mud with accelerators. Clean your painted surface and paint with quikrete bonding agent, found at Lowes and Homedepot, for about 9 bucks a quart. Then you are ready to mix the joint compound and plaster it as smooth as a baby's butt. In this video, joint Compounds, Westpac Fast Set, or USG Easy Sand: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWjXdmlrZ9aCfpqVt/ 2:26, I show the two types of gypsums, Westpac and easy sand. Cheers. 😉

Great KZbin videos and information! Thank you for all the helpful info. There was one thing missing in the video on lime-plastering a fireplace...there's no info (unless I missed it) on what wire mesh you used for corners, where to get it and how it is attached to the brick? If the brick is painted, does it need to be stripped before applying the lime plaster? My fireplace only goes 3/4 of the way to the ceiling. Do I brick it the rest of the way and then lime-plaster coat it? Or can I frame in wood, to the ceiling and plaster coat the wood? Any advice is gratefully appreciated!
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering Жыл бұрын
Howdy Truth Dude, If you want your fireplace to go to the ceiling, yes, frame it in the rest of the way. Why go to the ceiling? The corners are on, they are called, "stucco corner aid," sold at HD or any plastering yard such as westside building materials. No bonding agent was necessary as this was unpainted bricks, thus pouras, the plaster adheres to it by suction, as long as the existing is wet or moist. If your bricks or blocks are painted roll or paint on a bonding agent such as Plaster-Weld by Larsons or Quikrete. Cheers👨🏻‍🔬

Hope i’m not bothering you at this point… I went through all the questions, and not one answer…I applied the ekoplast, came out great..we’re thinking about just painting it and moving on, primer + paint what do you think? It seems as if you could almost sand this stuff as it resembles a chalk-like finish!! Thank you in advance!
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering Жыл бұрын
Howdy, if your happy with the finish then move to painting, this plaster is like Structo-Lite, which means it's complicated to make it smooth without the top dragging. I can make it smooth with a trowel and lots of water, but it is gluey, thus some folks don't understand how to make it smooth. This plaster hardens to strong to sandown. If it's not as perfect as you like you can apply any finish coat over it 👨‍🏫

Hi Kirk: I need your help. After watching this video using Ektoplast 50, I ordered 4 bags of plaster to be shipped to me so I could do my interior, brick, never been painted, or coated 100 sq. ft. fireplace. A few questions. 1. Do I need to apply a bonding primer to the brick to assure the Ektoplast adheres properly. The guy at Kemset in Wilmington said I did not need a bonding primer on raw brick. 2. I want to end up with a smooth, natural white finish as you did in the video. What smooth, white plaster product will bond well to the Ektoplast 50 and when should I apply it? Also, I am a DYI homeowner and will not take any risks and mess with any additives in the Ektoplast. I would have you do my project but I live on the East Coast.

Hi Michael, no you don't need a chemical bond when applying ekoplast or any other interior or exterior plaster to any porous surface. Not sure if it's porous, wet it, like a brick if it darkens no doubt it's porous, I used Diamond lime plaster as a finish plaster. In the description there are many different base coats that can be used also.👨🏻‍🔬

@@StuccoPlastering Thank you for the reply. This will help greatly. One other question. Should the Ektoplast be totally dry when applying the Diamond? I will most likely wait a few days or more before applying Diamond, unless you tell me to do it at a specific time after the Ektoplast is applied.

Hi Dominick, I know of Meiswinkle; last I heard, my boy, Paul Gueteriz, was a foreman with them? Just so you know, any color can be added to any lime plaster or joint compound; I have done this many times at no cost, as I tell folks I can add color but can't guarantee it will come out that exact color. I know how to get the exact color, but I'm not willing to do it. However, I do have a video of how to do it. Some things in this trade are just too boring to repeat.

Howdy Santos, no problemo, The Structo-lite had not set solid yet;. And or you applied the Diamond and over-troweled it.
