Kirk Love your videos ... I'm redoing the outside of my concrete stairs ... They were unfortunately painted all over in latex paint by the previous owner, some of the paint is holding moisture & peeling. My question is do I need to remove all the latex paint before applying the bonding agent so I can apply a thin cement coat ..... Wish they would have just left it without paint. 😡😠 Thank you.
@cynthiagranese72644 жыл бұрын
Kirk I have the same situation here as Angieb52. Can you apply cement over a bonding agent that hes been applied to a latex painted wall???
@StuccoPlastering4 жыл бұрын
Howdy both of you guys, when cement decks, stairs, bricks, cinder blocks have been painted. You first pressure wash with at least 3500 PSI to remove all the dust dirt and grime. Then you allow to dry, the next day, some paint may still lift or peal, no worries, remove any of this with a putty knife, Now, it's time for the bonding agent if stucco is to be applied, If the paint is to be applied the best quality primer money can buy. An important tip, if not properly cleaned or prepared, your next coat of stucco/paint won't adhere forever, as it is only as good as what it's attached to. I installed new windows and door and removed windows as well. The wall needs to be repaired/stuccoed. The plaster guy said the wall is chalky and needs to be ground down by using a hand grinder. Otherwise it will crack later down the road. Is he right? The house is built in the 1950’s. Thanks!
@StuccoPlastering2 жыл бұрын
Good evening Rowena; if it's chalky or did he mean soft? If it's either, I would suggest pressure washing. As grinding stucco releases silica into the air, where it will then settle, then when disturbed by walking by it will become airborne. Your kids' animals will then inhale it; it's toxic. Go's into the lungs but does not come out. Not good. His suggestion makes little sense to me; perhaps he knows something I don't, or is a fool? 🤔

Hey Kirk...can you do another video where you repair/resurface concrete landings? Kinda like the porch landing just above the repair you did here in this video...secondly, I have a similar issue with a raised concrete porch on my home here in Baltimore. The original construction was made with some sort of large concrete blocks and now all the seams between the blocks have deteriorated and the old stucco material is flaking out and falling apart, likely from freeze/thaw over the years. Is it best to attach and secure wire mesh over the old and apply another coat of stucco?

In my opinion from a guy who does foundations think it's an area of fail because of the oil on the concrete from the forums when they poured the wall. On the short walls the forums we use are usually on their last leg and the wax backing and extra cool stays on the wall. The original guys should of probably used a hot water soapy pressure wash

I already think I know the answer to my own question (experience) but will ask it any way since it seems to be a problem still for me. How do you keep from flat out making a mess. Either when mixing, or applying it just makes a mess. I occasionally repair chimneys I find it difficult to keep the shingles clean. I use tarps, roof paper, plastic tarps are too slippery, my mud tends to dry too quickly so now I’m misting what I’ve just completed, which soaks the tarps bleeds thru now I’m hosing down the roof for an hour. Any tips with just keeping the area clean and organized. Especially on a pitched shingled roof

I have a question, have you ever done a clay lime fine sand mix on interior walls.
@StuccoPlastering8 жыл бұрын
Evening Calvin, somewhat, I have applied American clay, Tadelakt and Eco Stucco more than a few times which all fall in line with your question. They are all pretty, unusual and cheerful in every room except in a shower, in a shower the beauty will be less attractive when a person realizes they need maintenance or they will mold big time. What happens when mold drys and you walk by it? Great question glad you asked,m it becomes airborne thus you inhale this toxin and become ill or run down. Great video, once again. Quick question, if the service life of SikaHyflex is 10-20 years, and the service the life of stucco color coat is 60+ years, wouldn't something like a slip joint perform better long-term at the porch/house joint?
@StuccoPlastering5 жыл бұрын
Good evening Oak Ridge, possibly, however, I was asked to blend the new to the existing, not to perform cutting and installations of slip or expansion joint. This cementitious color coat lasts forever. They lighten with age, but if applied correctly, adhere forever. I was working on a house next door when the fella approached me to fix, he said he had the material, I charged him 200 dollars for this fix, so cutting and installing metals were out of the question. I did this at a low cost to show folks what can be done with a bit of knowledge. What do you do with water stains over a few years on the "maintenance free" finish? See a number of lower sections discolor from water and such. I am considering this, yet I also dont want all that staining look...I have heard and seen of a "Fog finish" over it, but that I am not sure if it is something I want to do every 5 years.

Good morning Phil dude, excellent question.🤔 I'd suggest you wait until it rains for a day or longer, then when still raining, use your water hose with a spray nozzle. Most will come right off, sort of like taking a pan of burnt spaghetti and trying to clean it right away. Bad idea, fill it with water first, let it sit overnight, and most will just come off with water. Let them both soak. Sound weird, it's not as it works. Hey kirk! Im a painter and im curious as to why you guys do a color coat? Isnt it easier to just have the whole wall primed and painted?
@StuccoPlastering4 ай бұрын
@@RioFoundation Of course it is. But a good paint job last 7 to 10 years. Cementitious color finishes can last over a hundred years and provides extra insulation as it is 50 to 70 times as thick as painting. Plus stucco covers imperfections while painting enhances imperfections. These facts are just the tip of the iceberg.

@@StuccoPlastering great to know, I wasn’t aware of stucco being colored as the last step. Most work I do in florida is painted stucco and a lot of them are chalky so we seal and paint. What are some signs of stucco being colored vs painted other than it being a flat sheen?
@StuccoPlastering4 ай бұрын
@@RioFoundation Easy, wet the walls with the garden hose if it darkens like a brick or concrete it’s cementitious, if the color does not change it’s painted. 🕵🏼♀️

Looks to me the the rain is falling of the steps and sitting on the top coat and after 20 years that top coat has failed.
@StuccoPlastering8 жыл бұрын
Morning Andrew, my thought was they pressure washed the entire home but failed to hit this area, or perhaps they did hit this area, it may have rained along the way before the completion of the home, thus causing the excess dirt from simply mowing the lawn which blows into the air and settled on the porch, hence, the rain allowed this dust dirt moss to drip down that wall which comprimised the clean finish, and without realizing that wall may have been compromised, color coated right over it, nothing adheres to dust. If it were the way you suggested the wall would be filthy, but filth such as even diesel fumes, dirt and such does not loosen a color coat, Cheers my engineering pal, kirk giordano Plastering

By looking at the mildew on the wall the rain is running off the porch steps and sitting in the skip coat and after 20 years of rain its failed. I think your thinking into it to much. Cheers my best youtuber plasterer Andrew Pedley Plastering :)

Howdy Andrew Dude, no doubt, fellas like me who are foolish perfectionist find themselves wondering and worrying about some silly little things that don't add up to nothing also have the tendency to overthink, still,properly applied stucco does not fail with hundreds of years of dirt, rain and 100 degree intense heat instead the colors fade.
