Do you ever have one of those days when things just won’t go right?
The next time you have one of those days and your friction saver doesn’t come down, pull this little party trick out and impress the rest of your crew.
In this video we show you 2 method of rescuing your friction saver from the ground.
The first method is for when the friction saver gets stuck in a fork or caught on a stub.
The second method is for when you forget to attach a retrieval ball and pull your rope out but the friction saver stays in the tree.

The first 45 seconds is soo true - whether we acted on it or not: it was certainly an expression so tempting to do. Tying the throwline to the rope prior to pulling it out could be another option to save a lot of time as a “just in case” measure.

I would share a long story but I’ll keep it short and simple, I had this happen to me a few years ago, I tied a log hook onto a rope, use the log hook to get my line free, although I don’t advise it, because I forgot about the point😳 I did not damage my rope or rings but I thought about it afterwards. The first bit of the video was me about half an hour ago as I was out practicing setting a friction saver. Tired on a limb about12 foot off the ground. Did fine. Then I tried on a higher limb, about 20 foot up. After I finally got the throw line over the limb (took FOREVER!!! lol) I noticed that I forgot to pass the throw line through the big ring of the friction saver. Started again. Several throws later... Everything going well...got the friction saver up... and then noticed that, somehow, I managed to get the cord twisted round the side with the big ring. After a several attempts, the only thing I could see to do was to let the cord down and leave the friction saver. Was low enough (was only practicing today thankfully) that I could use a long pole to knock it loose. Wish I'd seen this video first. Would have been something else good to practice. Do love your videos. Fantastic. Brilliant work.

I am relatively new to tree climbing, but I am pretty experienced rock climbing. Used an ascender and a gri gri. Everything went perfectly. Cut a few branches. The last step was pulling rope down. I attached a lead line twine rope to my climbing rope because I wanted to leave the twine up in the tree for a few weeks to practice some more (found a great spot/crotch to top rope from). The carabiner got stuck when I was pulling the lead line back through. I went to pull the lead line back and it snapped. My rope was completely wedged. I was angry. Very angry. Haha. I threw another twine line up, irrationally, IT ALSO GOT STUCK. I literally set that line on fire with the idea of melting both out.--But I quickly put it out for fear of starting a forest fire. I then shot it a thousand times with my paintball gun trying to lubricate it. Tugged. Forever. Nothing. 2.5 total hours of futile toiling and cursing. Went inside as night fell. Found your video. Went back out this morning and got it out in less than 15 minutes. Took a victory picture. THANKS AGAIN MAN! You have restored my faith in tree climbing. 😆

I recall encountering problem where a similar, albeit simpler trick was. Same type of problem, but different piece of gear stuck ... Not even had main line up yet. Got the throwbag lodged in one of the consistently not-too-wide forks of a southern hemisphere podocarp ... so I threw another throwbag on the opposite end of the throwline over another fork two metres further up, and pulled line through there. What had felt like a throwbag wedged as snuggly as a well crafted mortise & tenon then proceed to be fished out with ease that belied the tribulations of the preceding efforts to dislodge the PITA Incredible how if the angle of pull is no good for effecting release, just how hopelessly ineffectual (at best) or detrimental (at less-than-best) the escalation of force sometimes can be ...

Today during the hottest part of the hottest day of the year, whilst practing ropes in the park I did a very foolish thing of setting and pulling up rope into friction saver , but not leaving any tail in the rope. So the knotted end of the rope was not heavy enough to come down with gravity. I have only started learning, had not ascended any tree yet and didn't have equipment for srt. But I did try to do SRT with footlocking for ages and couldnt make it work. In the end I did ddrt with other end of rope , directly into limb. No friction saver. I was forced to ascend tree for first time. This whole "ordeal" took two additional hours after my planned one hour of practice. I was so thirsty that whenever passers by asked me what I was doing I could not reply, my mouth was glued together, dry and gummy. But once I got up the tree, I got my rope and friction saver down, thankfully.
