I have started my solo off-grid shipping container home build, and I could not be more excited!
In the last few months, I finished building my own house foundations for under $6k when I was quoted $60k for contractors to do it, I installed a concrete shed slab myself for under $4k, I got my SHIPPING CONTAINERS delivered and placed on the footings that I built, I got the jetty posts in my dam and felled some dead tree's all before winter hit!
I have recently moved across the country due to the housing crisis and bought an off-grid property with the dream to build my own container house.
I became an owner builder and after 8 months of design and planning I was approved to build my own home in Western Australia.

The guys below have given you some great tips Jazzy, I'm a welder by trade too and you're really nailing it girl. Maybe when trying to deal with the crap weather, only prep a small section the same length as the flatbar you're about to weld on at a time ... prep and weld one piece at a time, then prep and weld the next ... etc etc. That way mother nature won't keep ruining your hard work. The world needs more happy, positive, motivated people like you ... keep making videos and we'll keep watching them. 👍

Great work mate, as an ex builder there is no real way to beat the rain when working outside. Maybe invest in a good tarp that you can stretch from the upper container to the lower or do your roof first so you have a permanent area to work under

The idea of cutting a hole in the side of the top container to store tools in is worthwhile. Ideally you need to be able to close it. And place it where you intend to put a door, window, or whatever. You'll want access to the roof later on anyway. Think about it before you start cutting. Standard door size is 2040x820, so make the frame 2100x1000. Or less, so you can increase the size later. I've no doubt you'll get used to framing doors and windows later. Just make your openings a little larger to begin with.

It might be worth getting a simple camping tent to store your welder and other tools on the roof. Screw the corners of the tent into the metal roof, you can patch those holes later. Keep up the good work!

Love your willingness to learn new things. Welding is all about practice as I'm sure you're realising . Keeping the lead as straight as possible helps with preventing kinks in the wire, try moving the welder further away from where you are working. Also check the tension on the feed rollers, if the screw on the rollers is too tight it can cause the wire to kink. Good luck with the weather and with your awesome project. Jasmine the kink in the wire happens because it gets locked up in the tip. loosen the spring rollers enough so that when it locks up it skids on the wire rather than kinking it. Then when it stops you can use long nose pliers to loosen the tip. The twisting usually frees the wire. Good work. Keep going.

@@Building.a.Dream-Barefoot_Jas Hey Jas also the copper tip can shrink after a lot of use, so either get lots of tips (there cheap) or get a small round foil and keep the copper tip good and free, plus you also need to shield the area ur welding as the argon gas that protects the weld will blow away if its too windy, causing prosity which are small holes in the weld, keep up the great work ur a champ

A propane torch, like a weed burner, can dry off your work surface and warm the metal to help with your welding.

you'll find it much easier getting the welding wire out of the torch if you remove the tip, also it'll go in easier, also you local welding supplier, will likely have some tip dip, and anti splatter, buy both, every once in a while as you are welding, dip the tip of the welder into the tip dip, it'll help prevent it from jamming up. l would get help when lifting the roofing sheets, you do not want to injure yourself.

Ripping along. You could always put an old ad banner up to protect you from the rain. They slide into a c chanel..so you’d need a section of c chanel on your top container then slide the banner in. You can find used ad banners for sale on marketplace. I use them when I restore caravans to create workspace.

You are a very bright lady. My suggestion is when you need to cover up something like the welder from the rain is us the material you have at hand ( the metal strips) to hold the tarp down.

Have a look on line and you can get a welding primer, which would able you to clean up the areas that you are going to weld and give them a paint with the primer and it will be ok to leave and come back to weld on with out having to clean it again.

mate grab yourself a decent tarp and stretch it from top container to bottom outside the angle will keep you dry and your work area dry also don't get set back 3 steps forward and 2 backwards is totally normal

Just a suggestion. Because you are fighting the weather, work in small sections at a time. That way you won't have to repeatedly clean rust. Also, I believe that there is a weld through primer that you could use. Clean the metal, spray the weld through primer and then weld. If it rains all you have to do is dry the water from the area that you are welding. You have taken on a mamouth task. All the best of luck.

Keep your welding wier as straight as possible with no sharp bends. Make sure the rollers in the might are set for gasles wire. Paint all your metal with weld through primer. It will help keep your steal rust free a bit longer 👍

Those wire brushes are excellent for cleaning up rust before priming the metal. I use them heaps. It's all going to be worth it as I watch the rain come down and it will all be worth it. Enjoy the journey.

I work in a factory in north west NSW , but the fitters and turner’s have a container workshops and container garages out on there properties, instead of just having the container, they all built steel roofs over the containers with a gap, so in summer the container doesn’t heat up, but rather the roof does

In hindsight when you expect rain you should have taken only 1 flat bar up at a time so that rust doesn't start on all your new pieces. Just keep having fun and quit worrying about anything. CHEERS!!!

Hey Jasmine! A welding instructor here. About your welding wire getting stuck. Have numerous contact tips on hand and don’t be shy about replacing them when needed. It is also possible to clean slightly damaged ones using a tip cleaners and filing the end slightly to clean off spatter. When welding be sure to keep the contact tip the correct distance away from the work/arc….8-12 mm. Of course the proper wire feed speed and volts need to be set appropriately also. Keep on with all good safety practices….if you get hurt the project will come to a standstill! You are dynamite! Love it all! Cheers! 🎉🎉🎉. From Montana, USA

Just a suggestion with the MIG wire, use the smooth groove rollers. The knurled rollers are no good. I know they say it’s for the flux core but they are a pain in the butt! The knurling damages the flux core and causes it to kink / birds nest back at feeder. Should eliminate the issues you’re having and make the welding experience a bit more enjoyable! I hope that makes sense🙃 Keep up the good work. Living the dream! I’m pretty jealous!

I find a leaf blower really good for clearing water off a wooden deck, should be the same to get it off the top of the containers, then you can use it elsewhere afterwards.

You will need a set of hands at least. Those sheets can turn into sails with surprisingly little wind. Add in the structural coordination. more than one set of hands would be very efficient!

Im a Roofer, and can handle 10m sheets byself. If you lift one end up u can drag up easy. Another way is drill a hole in the underlap and use like cargo strap hook to use like fishing line to lift one end up onto the roof... Wish was there to help but im 4000miles away

If you stick (arc) weld as long as you can keep your welder dry you can weld the wet roof but don't do it mig welding. As you run the bead the heat generated will dry the steel. Definitely invest in weld thru primer. It's great seeing you learn the different trades as you progress 😁

roll back your pressure on your feeder rollers, you basically want it to just push the fire through your fingers gripping it at the tip end, make sure your lead doesnt have any twists etc in it aswell, that should stop it from birdsnesting as much

Hi . What about a ibc tank or those blue plastic 44 gallon drums as a storage to put on your deck to keep stuff dry. By memory there not that heavy. Cut a flap or the bottom or top off if u get what I mean. Can pick them up cheap on marketplace.👌

Hi jas how about a large silver tarp and fix it 2 the blue container and temporarily to the red one and just move it along as you weld sections it will cover you and your gear as you weld and you could protect the gear from weather overnight as well gr8 job your doing what a little dynamo you are like a whirl wind of energy and determination Really enjoy your enthusiasm for your task.cheers That old dude

Can you weld the offcuts from the flat bar to the outside of the containers to make scaffolding platforms then when you have done the outside walls you can grind it off then weld it onto the next section and so on

amazing work Jamine - just found your channel. 👍👍 in regard to handling the roof sheets... its "possible" if no wind but will be more than twice as quick with another person and heaps safer if there's any wind around. I'm a chippy and have done my fair share of pergola roof sheeting and like with the welding, once you've done 2 or 3 sheets you'll figure out "your way" of handling them. if you were doing it on your own it would work to lean a sheet up against the container - lay a piece of timber or a towel or something to slide it on - then climb up and pull it up from the top. I'd normally say don't try on your own but looking at what you've done on your own already you're probably up for the challenge. biggest tip - make bloody sure the first sheet is square with the structure. second biggest tip, don't screw the screws down too hard (if you squash them more at one end they can creep out of square) and don't put them all in (the screws) until you've got all the sheets down and square. maybe start with screwing the top, middle and bottom purlins with 3 or 4 screws each sheet (work out a pattern making sure you have a screw in every overlap) until you've got all the sheets on, then use a string line to make sure your screws hit your purlins. have fun 👍👍💪👏👏👏

Thank you for the work you're doing. Hopefully, I will be going through the same process here in North Texas. Because of the heat here, I am planning on going subterranean, with geothermal cooling. I was planning to use only two containers, but after watching you, I believe I'll redesign the structure to accommodate four containers now. I have also come up with what I believe is a unique idea for rain collection and filtering. I hate to see the hardships you are encountering, but they say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Hey mate, if you loosen the bolt holding the wire feed wheel in your welder, when the wire gets stuck in the gun it will just slip on the feed wheel instead of kinking. It’s just been wound in too tight, that’s why it’s doing that. Also have you tried Galmet rust converter and sealer? You can just scrape off the big flakes of rust then brush that on and it kills the rust and seals in one step. It’s amazing. Good luck with the build!!!!

let some presure off the rooler on your wire feed if it was to weld it self to the nib it will slip on the wire at the roller rather than nesting , saving you lots of time re feeding the wire youll just have to clear the nib , hope this helps and well done you doing great

Jas, I am not a welder ... not one moment in the construction business. BUT, I do live in one of the wettest corners of this world (PNW) and so I have endless thoughts on how to keep your gear and materials dry. After 35 seconds of deep thought, here's my answer: Build a little temporary A-Frame out of wood and wrap it in a REAL tarp (waxed canvas) materials : a) 10 4 meter boards (your dimensional lumber is a 90x45, right? That's what Architect Google sez) b) a handful of trimming scraps to elevate it about 2-3 inches... keep the canvas from sitting on the wet metal surface c) a bunch of scrap plywood bits to make a floor inside the canvas enclosure d) heavy waxed canvas tarp : 6 by 4 or 6x5 meter, kinda/sorta Then construct 4 (four) isosceles triangles, 1.5 meter per side. - Space them 1.5 meters apart, like a tube. - Connect them with the long 90x45s (4 across the bottom, to support some weight) - Put on some short legs on it, to lift it up off the metal deck. - Wrap it in the canvas. (use the free-end's eyelets as a tie-in for some 1 cm rope, and wrap it around the tube at each eyelet... this keeps the wind from lifting the skirt, so to speak. - Toss in the plywood scraps, so the metal and welder have something to sit on. - IMPORTANT : find a good spot to place this tri-tube on TOP of the containers. THEN, tack-weld on some big metal eyelets about 1-2 meters out and away from the tube... use these as tie-downs for the eyelets on the ends of the canvas... since the canvas will be pulled down towards the eyelets, it creates a natural sloping roof to run the water away from the tube's contents. - You'll probably want to buy a simple eyelet punch/crimper anyway. This way you can put eyelets exactly where you need them. Canvas tarps, ropes, and selective eyelet positioning will allow you to build nice, light weight shade-spaces in the Secret Garden and the Pond/Jetty. ( you don't have to carry around meters of hardwood and shingles and such) Saves construction time/can take them down if big windstorms are threatening/easier to re-build when wind damage happens anyway. Also, a great way to capture and direct rainwater... loads of Mad Max uses. (at the end of the roof-side welding, take apart the A-frame and re-use the lumber for another project... don't cut the long timbers if you can get them in those 3-4 meter lengths... in vest a little extra in the bigger tarp. Pro Tip, if you make the Tri-Tube big enough, you can toss an inflatable air bed in on top of the materials in the tube when it rains, and you can start an entire new series of videos : "Day Camping with Jas, Welder and Dry BarStock"... at least, your backside won't be hanging out in that downpour_ So, I love the progress, admire the skills and wish I had a whole nuther lifetime to pursue something like your project. Stay warm. Stay Dry. Stay You.

@@Building.a.Dream-Barefoot_Jas A couple ideas for finding waterproof canvas/cloth : a) old sailcloth : see if a marina or seagoing supply shop keeps old ripped up sails. Some are waterproof, some not. b) look for the big hay operations (if Aus does that thing... it's big here) . They have huge canvas tarps to keep the sun/rain off the hay during transport, and they tend to tear right along an edge (hundreds of miles of high winds on the road).I can get 500 sq ft for free with just a phone call... but the cost of shipping to Aus would be more than buying a round trip ticket for a herd of turtles. Gotta get back to 'work... mowing a few pastures to keep the fire danger down.

@@Building.a.Dream-Barefoot_Jas sadly I don't think the weather is going to improve anytime soon we are in winter after all I just pick my days and get out there and do as much as I can before it buckets down rain again it's hard when you want a productive day and mother nature has other plans lol I'd go crazy if I was stuck inside I'm glad I've got animals to keep me busy now it's baby season so new additions to the farm the piglets have started next is lambs then cows
