Stuck In Mud with Excavator: Beaver Dam Removal Gone Wrong

Beaver dam removal with excavator gone wrong, stuck in mud with excavator. I removed 3 beaver dams to fill up the pond and get rid of the beaver dams. But the beaver dam removal has gone wrong when I tried to gross the big ditch to reach the last most bigger dam. I was sure that the bottom of the ditch is good to go because I'm done it before from the other side of the bridge. I made a mistake and didn't check the bottom of the ditch and it has quite deep shores too. The bottom was blue wet clay and the excavator got stuck immediately. There were a few different options to get the excavator out but we choosed the harder way. After all, we managed to get the excavator out from that ditch and without the big damages. One door window is broken and I have to do a lot of washing and cleaning. So, I got beavers revenge!

That’s one thing you get to learn when working with companies over the years. Especially companies that like to hire inexperienced “cheap” “operators”. 😂 when I first started in the field I worked for a few of those companies. I got to see a LOT of crazy things happen. Drug addicts blacking out at the controls of excavators. One guy slumped over the swing stick and was spinning wide open for hours. Cops came. They tried throwing rocks at the cab to wake him up. Didn’t work. 😂 he finally woke up and stopped. Cop ran up and opened the door. Guy had a needle in his arm. Scary stuff.

I'm not a machine operator, haven't even played one on TV, but I have owned pickups (and a '91 Ford Festiva, my personal favorite) that I've gotten mudded up pretty deep before. Floor mats and dry brush always saved the day. I got the Festiva in a couple situations far worse than you have here where everyone was telling me to give it up and let it RIP as it was already mostly buried, but that silly smurf blue car never let me down and always managed to dig itself out once I sacrificed the floor mats and fed it some scrub brush! Don't tell the ladies, but we know it's all worth it if you're having fun.

Damn, I'm glad we don't have beavers in my country ha. Have you ever thought of making a bracket for the back of the machine to carry 2-3 wooden mats, or time for the bigger tracks. I used to work on the bogs in Ireland cutting turf, drawing/windrowing peat and ditch digging and we would have massive tracks on the xe 100s and trackers, you should look up on here Irish turf cutting and Bord na Móna stuck. Thanks for the great upload. 👍

Here we needed to remove the dam because we raised the water with pond dam and we didn't want to leave the dams under the water. Basically we removed the dams and raised water back up. So beavers got more water to live on.

I once got a skidsteer stuck in some stuff like that. The more I tried to get myself out, the worse it got. I had to have a friend extend planks to me over the swamp so I could get out of the cabin. Luckily my neighbor was working his field with his big 9R with tracks, he was able to pull me out. Once nature patched in the area, it did make a nice little deep spot by the creek, kids can swim in it lol. My engine bay was hit too, full of swamp gunk, smells like a turtle's gym sock.

@FattyMatty024
@FattyMatty024 4 жыл бұрын
When you pull yourself you pick up the leading edge of the tracks to get up on things. In this situation you would just push yourself deeper especially in the bottom of a drainage ditch. I’m wet mud like that suction is your worst enemy.
@AFHProjects
@AFHProjects 4 жыл бұрын
@@FattyMatty024 Yeah, that's right. I know that well but as you see I didn't do that enough when I was going into the ditch. I realized this immediately when I reached the bottom and I knew that now probably I get stuck. I broke the bottom of the ditch with the tracks leading edge.

Did you become stuck because the excavator was not strong enough to be able to pull you out just with the boom and bucket into the ground? Or is it just more like the mud acts as a suction cup. I was just curious, some guy told me he has a older one and it's very strong, slow, bad on fuel, but he said he it would lift the entire machine off the ground. If the thing is close to like 40 thousand pounds in weight that is some pretty heavy lifting. I doubt that was it i just figured you would of been able to lift and grab yourself out, at first it didn't look too bad then after awhile i was like oh man he really is stuck lol. I probably would of done the same thing thinking i would be able to get out too. It happens, especially with machines with tires. It's one reason why i always skip over looking at skidsteers with tires, it's tracks or nothing for me :P

Having no experience whatsoever, I have a curiosity question. If it were permissible, once stuck, would it have been possible to dig the opposing bank down to the level, maybe lower, of the stuck machine? Dig under the front tracks and place the drier dirt there for a base? Do this until the tracks could get traction and clear of the mud? Is what I described even possible? I know you were relieved once you got out. Thanks for posting.
@AFHProjects
@AFHProjects 4 жыл бұрын
It is possible. But in this case the water is flowing through and fills the hole. But we dug out the wet clay all the time and put the dry dirt back under the tracks. Basically we did this way.

Wonder if you had lifted the boom as far as it would go and the dipper right in when turning you might have been able to push yourself up properly looked like you were pulling yourself in were you placed the bucket no expert just something to think on if ever in that situation again always easy to think about different tactics watching a video tbf. Stay safe and take care

Thanks! It's too weak to push like this and you push the back of the excavator into the ground this way. If you pull, it's stronger and you can lift your front same time.

Thumbs are relatively cheap. Next time you might want to consider mats. The thumb would help a lot for picking the debris out too. I would have been afraid to go into a bog like that without mats. I would have sunk out of site with my narrow rubber tracks too. Anyway, thanks for sharing just how easy it is to get jammed up. Things like that make me think thrice before jumping off in a creek.

@@AFHProjects Oh, well... you probably saved someone else a lot of grief. I had a similar experience in a sand pit with a 1 ton and trailer. Had t o drag it out with the excavator.

it is pretty funny after the fact when it is not happening to you. I did something similar with an excavator a couple times. I noticed how you tried to pull yourself out the way you came. When i had done it my first time I only went about half as far as you were extended, dug my bucket blade in and lifted as high as i could go up before pulling while driving. Repeat as needed. Once my tracks were about a quater on dryer soil i swung around and pushed while driving. A lot less damage. But I can kinda see that the back of your machine might not have made it acceptable.

Why is this trench there in the first place? A moat? Beavers are good for local hydrology and fire protection. Pretty wild experience! Glad you're okay.

Phew I feel ya on that one. That’s a right mess eh. If I’m crossing a questionable area... I do the bucket test. If my bucket sinks easily more than 1/4 of its height... I take the side of caution and log mat it with whatever is available.

What if you just took the debris and got a hold of it and then set it into the water that's going downstream or would that just clog the stream down downhill I'm not sure but it seems like it would be the easy way to get rid of it at first when it first opens up there's that big giant waterfall or tidal wave if you will I don't know I could be wrong I could be absolutely wrong I'm not there I don't know I'm just wondering thank you very much I appreciate the content bye
