Every time my husband who is (caucasian)encounters one of those racist conversations, he says well my wife is Hispanic and he shows them a pic of me. They feel really embarrassed afterwards. Sometimes silence is just as bad as the comments itself. Rehearse some similar situations at home with a response that shuts that crap down if you truly don't agree. I understand the initial response is typically shock, so when you have something prepared it helps you get out of that state of shock. You inadvertently gave him an audience and now he will associate your business with that rhetoric. For whatever reason, in America we have adopted this need for comfort so much that we are polite to super shitty people just to avoid confrontation. Stand up for what's right, even when it inconveniences you. Show people like that you are NOT on their team or just join them. There's no longer a middle ground.
