Zero-turn riding mowers are the worst when it comes to oil filters. The engine is rear-mounted and bolted to the frame. My TORO 5000 Timecutter is an excellent example of this. You can see the filter, but you can't get to it. I could get the removal tool around it, but the handle had no room to turn. I finally did two things to the tool that allowed it to work. The first was to use a length of thin adhesive rubber weather strip. I attached it to the inside of the tool. This gave the tool a good grip and kept the tool from slipping. The second step was to cut the handle to clear the mower's frame. This actually worked. While at my auto parts store, I found a selection of the cap filter wrench. I bought the one with the correct filter diameter and number of flutes. When I placed it on the filter, I found that the socket extension tool would go so far into the cap that it would make contact with the filter, which caused the removal cap to slip. I went to AMAZON and found a cap that had a raised extension socket that solved this problem. Just like the one in your video. A true example of the saying, "Where there's a will, there's a way." Thanks for your video. It really helped me.

If you happen to have a socket but it's too big for your filter I found that you can make strips of paper towel and line the inside of the socket to snug it up. Saved me from using the screwdriver method.

If the screw driver doesn't work, time to grab a chisel, punch and hammer. Chisel is to cut a Groove on the top of filter, punch is to stick in the groove and punch it out. Otherwise drill two holes on top of filter socket across from each other, put your filter socket on filter, run two sheet metal screws through filter socket to filter and then crank. This has happened to me 3 times. This last time was on my Harley because obviously people think its necessary to tighten filters to 200 ft-lbs

Definitely just oiled up the new gasket on the new filter and HAND TIGHTENED it unlike whatever dipshit that put it on lol, i swear the torque wrench (click type style) was clicking at 120 foot lbs but with a bit of cussing, busted elbow and alot of cigarettes 😂 i finally managed to pop mine and replace it. Look into that tool though i found it in the normal tool section for filter removals at Wal-Mart, shit was a life saver

I have a Duramax and for whatever reason the filter leaks in the winter so I have to tighten it down. Now that it's summer the filter and rubber expanded and I can't get it off! I used one of those loop wrenches ground a hole in it so I could stick a punch through it into the filter so it would stop spinning but bent the handle on it. I'm hoping a specific filter socket will take it off. I've tried the screwdriver method before and ended up ripping a line through the filter and made the problem worse.

@@thardyryll Luckily there was just enough filter left and I spent 6 hours using pliers, channel locks, penetrating oil, and a lot of patience. When there isn't much material left from the filter to work with I just would work at it in 1-hour intervals , take a break, then go back at it until I began to see it move. I never want to be in that position again. Too many backyard DIYs out there that don't know what they're doing. That filter was on there way too tight. I ended up ruining 1 thread but after screwing a filter on and off for about 20x I was able to reform the damaged thread. It works perfectly now and no oil leaks.

@@josephliptak What a nightmare. I am convinced that the screwdriver method works only half the time, and the risk of tearing the filter without removing it is huge. When I encountered a severely stuck filter some months ago I modified the steel strap-type tool by welding on a 20-inch piece of solid steel rod. The leverage from that thing is huge - assuming there is room. It sounds like the guy who installed your filter used a tool like mine the way it wasn’t supposed to be used.

No hammer you can shake up stuff under there with the pounding use a drill. Drill the hole through the filter put a screw driver through it and turn it to the off position. Make sure that gasket came off with the filter you removed you don’t want to double the gasket that will be very bad. When you install new filter hand tight only. Don’t use a oil wrench to tighten. You can screw up the gasket by twisting it to tight. Also end up having a hard time getting it off. Like you just did. You can use a plastic bread bag to catch the filter while unscrewing. By the way while your under there spray the rubber gaskets and axle boots with a lubricant oil like WD4. Reconditions the rubber. Over fifty five years changing oil and filters but what do I know.😁
