Working at an auto parts store, I heard that the bypass valve is for if the filter gets too clogged and blocks too much flow. In that case, unfiltered oil is better than no oil, so the valve will make the oil skip the filter element and go straight back into the engine.

Oil can flow up to 50 to 80 psi now you picture water hose shoots 65 PSI now picture of water hose at 80 psi that water would shoot 15-20 ft out of the hose. So yes oil is under high pressure and it is moving fast to get in the valleys and veins of the engines.

I did a dumb thing with my Tacoma when changing the oil and filter. I didn’t want to take the rock guard off the bottom of the truck and the filter is hidden under the alternator so t found a filter wrench that fit it and was trying to loosen it and I did get it loose but didn’t realize it and I said heck with it I’ll drive up on my ramps so I reached in and started the truck and turned around to get the ramps and then looked to see a sea of oil under my truck. I shut it off quick and checked the oil and there was a little over a quart left. No harm done but I found out just how much oil goes through the filter and let me tell you it’s all of it and fast. So it’s good to change them and make sure they are on correct.

A lot of oil filters can be had in a longer version. It would have to be matched up rather than part numbers. Oil filters for small block Chevys are easily had in long versions, if there is room to fit there is more filter area for same price. A long clear one would be easier to see. Great Video!

@mannys9130
@mannys9130 2 жыл бұрын
@@robertheinkel6225 It does though. Lawnmower engines are nowhere near as well built and well protected as car engines. The result is that oil gets much more contamination in it with a mower engine compared to a car engine. :) More contaminants, means a bigger filter is needed to last the duration of the oil change interval. A larger filter also increases overall engine oil capacity. A lawnmower usually uses a carb until you get into some realllllly expensive products. Carbs dilute the oil with unburned fuel that condenses and drips into the sump. Therefore, more oil volume minimizes the effect of gasoline dilution over the oil change interval. Usually you can't easily make a crankcase bigger arbitrarily, but you can remotely locate the oil filter mounting plate and upsize the filter very easily. :)

There's usually high milage filters that are longer. For my civic, there is regular filter, and high mileage filter that is taller. Usually same part number but with an XL at the end or something like that depending on manufacturer. Not every brand has that option, but most do. I always get the taller one, but ignore the "high milage" claim and still change it with every oil change at 7k miles. The high milege from stp claims 15k miles and mobile one claim 20k if I recall correctly. They're usually only a dollar on 2 more so I think it's worth it

Windshield sealant is an interesting choice. I’ve found that omitting the primer greatly reduces the adhesion of the sealant. Once cured, the sealant generally pulls off cleanly without it, especially with plastics. I’ve experienced that with helicopter windshields. It’s interesting how it differs from automotive applications on glass vs the plexiglass on the helicopter. There was also a noticeable difference with sealant procured locally compared with sealant we received from France. Technique is important also. If air bubbles are introduced into the sealant, it looses strength. A filter housing machined from a billet of plastic would probably last longer, but the forming machine is an interesting process. Great video 👍😎

What a lot of people don't realize is oil's lubrication is its secondary feature. Its primary one is to keep the moving parts of the engine cool. In other words, an engine can survive a lack of lubrication much longer than it can a lack of cooling of its internal parts which, when overheated, lockup and can break. You can actually replace engine oil with water and run the engine for an extended period of time so long as you keep adding water (as the heat tends to boil it off). Yes, the engine will suffer from accelerated wear so don't do this to an engine you care about, but it will run with water in place of oil. That is why so much oil is circulating so quickly through the engine. It must carry a lot of heat quickly back down into the oil pan where it can dissipate. Some engines even have oil coolers to aid in this.

The bypass valve is their to let oil flow through if the filter element gets blocked. The bypass valve allows oil to flow through even if it is unfiltered as its a better choice than starving the engine of oil. Looking at the service manual for the car, it will tell you specs about the oil pump and how much oil it will pump at a given RPM.

Well the transparent filter housing makes sense. Some cars have a housing and filament arrangement where the housing is just an injection moulded plastic piece, and I've seen clear housings used in water filtration systems in the past and thought "that's a great idea, as you can visually inspect the condition of the filter without removing it 1st" and in an automotive situation you would be able to immediately see the state of prime on the lubrication system, and how black the oil is

The bypass valve in the filter is not to prevent rupturing (that is the task of the pressure relief in the oil pump assembly), but to allow at least some lubrication when the filter gets clogged. Of course, it means the oil won't get filtered anymore, but that still means less damage than no lubrication at all.

Bypass valve remains open even on fresh oil as long as oil is thick and cold and it closes , sending oil through filtration cartridge once engine is near to operating temperature. It takes longer with the distance and with dirt in oil filter to the point where oil engine flows all the time through open bypass without filtering if you have very dirty oil and filter without changing it for long time/long distance. The anti-drain valve is just a round rubber flap that cover the inlet holes, oil under pressure lifts it to enter the filter, it's on the inlet side so it only works if the outlet is not allowing oil to go anywhere, if you take the filter out it will drain through the paper element through the threaded hole, more or less quickly depending on whether the oil is hot or cold, although only filtered oil will be poured, any particles between the can and the paper element remain blocked inside. While mounted on the engine I assume that the oil will not drain out of the outlet as it would create a suction at the inlet sucking more oil from the crankcase, and there is no "free energy" to create such oil flow when the engine is stopped.

Really cool results! But I think it really brings up the question, do you really need to pre fill the oil filter after changing the oil? I’ve always done it. And I’m sure most other people do it to. But it appears that the filter fills up so fast that it might not matter.

Make an oil filter so fine that it turns dirty oil clear again. Using a ultrafiltration unit made for E-coating. It can turn the paint liquid into perfectly clear water. It’s actually amazing how they work.

Hi Vlad. Please could you say what was the First experiment where you added Silver Powder to the engine and why?? I guess the Silver is too soft to harm the engine? Thank you. Adding the Silver this time made it much easier to see the oil circulation. Very good. Do you think the Silver would help an old engine with worn cylinder bores or big-end bearings. Thanks again, Bark.

Okay. I'm convinced. No more plastic oil filters. Probably get rid of the plastic oil pan too.
