Here's an idea from an old auto mechanic. Pulling axles and transmission and other shaft removals: Start with a good penetrating oil like PB blaster. I would go for the big direct extraction tool. Drill a hole through the exposed post. Attach a chain using a long bolt forming a loop. Use a slide hammer to slap it out. You may want to put the bike on the ground and a helper holds it down. This avoids twisting the frame, will not distort the seat post, pulls it in the direction you want it to go. I've seen other bike guys do this not just automotive.

Bikeman, thank you for these stuck seat post videos I have one that is like this Giant Cypress ST bike on this video. I have tried everything and the post is now mangled on the upper end. Were you ever able to get this one out or did you have to scrap this bike completely?
@alexthorbrand90248 жыл бұрын
Heavy duty pipe wrench seems to be the most useful thing to have. If you can twist the pole then you are half way there. i was lucky with my seat post, it just needed some WD40 to set in over an hour and i could twist the pole out. I've seen a slide hammer being used successfully too

So you ever remember if you ever got that post out somehow?

I do small engines, I had a threaded muffler sieze in the block of an old engine, broke off leaving only the threaded tube. Had luck by using a short piece of hacksaw blade to cut from the inside of the tube toward the block without going into the block. Made a few more similar cuts. Used a punch to peel the sections away from the block. It worked. In my case the length of the tube was only 2" or so. It would be harder to perform in this case, but do-able.

Babysealskiller yea but what i mean is that if you get it to move even just a inch, the battle is over, there is no way you are not getting it out at that point. The hardest part is getting them to move in the first place

perhaps (maybe) thread the outside of seatpost and thread a loooong pipe to it, but once the post is toast (crushed) you're done with that method, too unless it breaks into pieces you can get out somehow.

ROTFLMAO, great intro! Also a great job explaining where most solutions fall short. Heat will probably work, but in order to move metal you have to be hot enough to damage paint and also melt braze on lugged bikes and stress the thin wall seat tube. It would be my absolute LAST resort. Can the guts of the springer post be drilled out? How thick are the walls of that post? I would stick with cutting things out if at all possible.

Bikeman, I like your persistence but try to avoid deforming the original shape of the tube. In the hardest cases this will make things worse to remove. Keep original shape and continue special sauce with temperature hot and/or cold and hard tapping with a hammer. Son of A has displayed some good points that should be used regulariy. Whatever works, keep up the good work!

You have the right tool my friend(air hammer) but the wrong idea on how to use it to take the seat post. the easy way to take the seat post is with a air hammer(having the right idea and using it the right way) I made a video on how I did it with a air hammer.

You should of drilled a hole threw the seat post and put a steal cable in there and hooked it up to a truck and strapped the frame to another truck with the E break and pulled it out.. Worked for me EASILY and i just uploaded a video of it..... My seat post was aluminum and broken all the way off !!! Please check it out because it WORKED GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you like your chemistry, assuming that the seat post is un coated aluminium and the frame is not aluminium (very important this bit) you could try pouring either mercury or gallium (mercury is liquid at room temperature, gallium needs a little warming), they will either 'rust' the aluminium away or turn it into a paper weak alloy.....mercury is quite toxic, I don't think gallium is.....search youtube for Mercury or Gallium and Aluminium and see the results
