By the end of the day there is not a lot of difference as long as u have enough butter on it makes no diff. I’ve been trying to teach my 7yr old daughter how to lay ,I’m a kerb layer mason by trade but she makes a mockery of grown men who think they are layers il send vid on Facebook. Speed comes with experience 👍🏽

When I built my garden walls the main difficulty I had in buttering was not picking up a consistent amount of mortar each time. It was always too much or too little!

I was taught just to slap the motor on the end of the brick and cut face edge off then there's no way of marking the face,quicker cleaner and less hassle

Usually if I'm buttering on the wall I'll swipe face then top of the brick using enough mud that when I lay the next brick the mud will squeeze through the whole joint. If I'm buttering with brick in my hand I'll swipe the bottom top and then face. The guy that taught me usually spread the bed joint heavy enough that he could drag the next brick through the mud on the wall and that way he didn't have to butter any brick.

I'm 4 swipes as well stu .....hate to see speed joints!! but most guys do it to shave time and earn more its poor though. The only thing I do different to you is i was taught to butter the brick im laying not the brick ive just laid if I got caught when i was a young lad doing it your way i would have been in for a thrashing.
@Stucrompton1
@Stucrompton1 4 жыл бұрын
more likely to be catching the line when you butter the brick laid tho mate ive tried it
@TheTraditionalGolfer
@TheTraditionalGolfer 4 жыл бұрын
@@Stucrompton1 thats what I'm saying mate when you walk forwards you butter the front of the brick lay it and then repeat i butter out the back of my hand when walking forward so I'm buttering the brick I'm about to lay not the front on the previous brick....hope that makes sense!! I never touch line I don't furrow my bed either cause that catches the line I would have got bollocking for that aswell I spread my bed with my trowel under the line not over it. Like you say everyone to there own mate.
@Stucrompton1
@Stucrompton1 4 жыл бұрын
i guess you catch the line regardless of whatever way you spread, seen all sorts of hear say, i would love to see a video of these techniques that never touch the line in whole day. but i know myself its easy to make a short clip when you consiously try not to move the line even when i lightly furrow under the line still found it difficuilt. kno what u mean tho.

@@TheTraditionalGolfer Stupid questions, but pardon me as I'm trying to learn... Why would you have gotten the "trashing" for buttering the "leading edge" of the brick? Is the thought that it may take too long to get the next brick in place (as the mortar's already setting with no adjoining brick in place)? And if that's a concern, maybe this is unconventional (for right-hander), but why wouldn't you butter in the manner Stu does, but move from right to left when laying? I say that because I agree with Stu... from an ergonomics perspective, it seems like Stu's method of buttering would be easier on the body (especially long-term) than what he's showing at 3:20. So, if you butter the brick as Stu does normally, but lay right to left, you have the best of both worlds... right? So what am I missing that makes this a bad idea? Again, these may be stupid questions, so pardon my ignorance. :-D
