Stud Straddling Shed Shelves

I had a cheap plastic shelf in my shed to hold yard work supplies and chemicals. The shelves were badly sagging and not very wide. I needed a solution to get the storage items up higher and yet still provide ample storage.
A quick shelf system using an easy method that requires minimal materials and plenty of strength. I call it the "stud straddling shelf system". I used a jig I made for my shop shelves that allows for perfect layout for the brackets and 2x4 shelf support.
The side parts are made from 1/2" plywood (3/4" could easily be used if your shelves are that thickness) cut 12x12 square, then split evenly at 45 degrees. The center part of the sandwich is a 2x4 cut to length.
**update:
you can make the supports any size that will work. i generally make mine about 2-6" less than the depth of the shelf. Less if lighter "stuff" will be on the shelf. You can also skip a stud, again it depends on the weight that the shelf will be holding.

This may not be that big of an issue, just a me thing. I cut the horizontal piece of plywood (shelf) to accommodate the vertical studs. I, or another member of the house, will sometimes push an item that may push another item too far back, causing it to fall through the hole. It also adds a few more inches of storage space, depending on the size (depth) of the studs.
@ChristcrossCrafts
@ChristcrossCrafts 3 жыл бұрын
I normally will do that myself to the shelf. On this application, I wanted the gap so I could slide my tool handles (shovels, rakes, etc.) behind it to help keep them from falling over. The gaps are sort of acting as tool holders which worked out really well.

Great idea and simple jig. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to use this for storing lumber. With studs on 16" ctrs, how deep do you think the horizontal 2x4's can be? I'm thinking 16 to 18 inches?
@ChristcrossCrafts
@ChristcrossCrafts 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. When I moved and set up my wood shop, I used this method for storing lumber. I modified it a little so I didn't have the long 45° angle taking up space. Instead, I went with something about half that. It was still long horizontally but shorter vertically. I ended up with about a 14" shelf. The angled bracket was about 12" deep x 6-8" tall. I had no problems. The deeper you go, the more likely an issue could occur if you don't have the vertical suppport. If you put a bracket on every stud, you should be fine.

What are the dimensions of the actual shelf? What are the dimensions of the stud that supports the shelves? Some of us are complete newbys and need that information. And also the dimensions of the triangle support? Here's my guesses. Since the studs of the shelf are about 3 3/8 inches (protruding) and I think you said the triangle supports are 12 inches on two sides. I am guessing that the support studs have to be 8 5/8 inches. I am also guessing the length of the your shelf is 60 inches. If I want bigger I need to add more shelf supports. Am I right about the measurements?
@ChristcrossCrafts
@ChristcrossCrafts 4 жыл бұрын
The jig is completely customizeable. Depending on what im putting on the shelf i will make the triangle supports 2-6" less (depth) than the shelf. If more stuff (weight) will be on them, i add more supports or make the supports slightly deeper. I have some shelves I've made 12" deep and some 16". I use the same jig to make the supports so it is totally up to your shelf requirements.

@@rudolfrothemund2269 if I remember, that shelf is 60". I made a couple shelves for that shed. One shelf is 16" deep and has 12" plywood supports and 14" 2x4 support. There are a few variables that will impact that... The depth of the shelf and the size of the angled plywood side piece. Also, how many you use (i.e. every stud vs skipping every other one). What’s time consuming is cutting those triangular pieces of plywood. In the end it’s a decision between time vs money. If you have the time you can save a lot of money. However if you don’t have a lot of time, but you’re willing to spend the money the Etsy storage shed organizer shelving kit is the way to go. But your system is one of the best I’ve seen if you have the time. In order to cut those triangular pieces of plywood and make them all exact with any speed you would need a very good table saw and a very good miter saw. If you cut those with a regular circular saw your neighbors will hear a lot of swear words because of all the mess ups. Not to mention all the time spent drawing lines for the cuts. And if you’re not a pro you’re going to mess a bunch up. But it’s all about time. Unfortunately I don’t have that much. But, good video nonetheless.
@ChristcrossCrafts
@ChristcrossCrafts 3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate you watching. Once you make one, you can use it as a template for the others. Or, A straight edge works well for cutting the pieces long and into squares. Then, it doesn't matter if the diagonal is off a little bit. As long as the 90° part is square. Once in squares, you can cut 2-3 diagonally at one time. This saves lots of time.

That is extremely overbuilt for the less than 20 lbs you have on that.I built something similar with only 2x4s and it was able to hold m 200+ lbs on one bracket. The main difference was that I used the 2x4s the wide way because I have to screw it into the finished wall and instead of plywood, I used a section of 2x4 cut at a 45 degree angle and it is all supported from the top because there is peg board beneath it, so there is even less strength than what you built.
