Student demonstration | Tariq Ali interview | Socialism | This Week | 1968

The clash on October 27th which many of the fringe groups in this Vietnam Demonstration seem to anticipate is evidence of a new dangerous mood in demonstration politics. Why are some organisations so disenchanted with our political system that they wish to brine it down in the violence of confrontation? Is their revolutionary model fact or fantasy?

Fun fact: Ali Tariq’s family have been wealthy land owners, playing both the West and India since the times of the Mughal, then Sikh, then British empires; before helping found the Pakistani state and becoming the country’s current elite

This is a reductionsit take on his family history, but his parents were educated and sent him to the less-elite school so he could know more class diversity (lower class and middle class students for e.g.) If you want to understand Tariq Ali, look at his parents and upbringing in Pakistan and then Oxford.
