She clearly is still in shock and may be compartmentalizing atm. I think kids need to be off limits after a tragedy like this for media interviews until they have time to process what they just survived. Parents need to be present for those interviews. Parents teach your kids to put as much as they can between themselves and the shooter including the walls. Drywall doesn’t stop much either. My kid knows to put her backpack on her chest and try to keep her vital areas covered. School books in a backpack can help. It sounds trivial hoping a book can stop a bullet but I would take that if it gave my kid a chance to survive. I was at an event a week prior to the columbine shooting with those kids when I was in high school and it has never left my mind to teach your kids to be vigilant and know how to escape a active shooter situation. I couldn’t have fathomed back then that these types of situations would be so common now… sending prayers to everyone affected by this senseless violence.

This boy spends most of his day at school, but it seems like nobody managed to really connect with him. You'd think someone would've picked up on what was going on in his head. I mean, didn't anyone notice anything off? What pushed him to do something so destructive? It feels like there were so many missed opportunities to spot the warning signs and maybe prevent this whole tragedy. You can tell she’s not really smiling, it’s a way to get through her pain.

It sure looks like she's not only smiling but trying not to laugh at times.

So the silent drills she said they did in the past, at the school I work at anyway are called "secure and teach" and that is not for an active shooter. We've had real situations where we did the "secure and teach" and it was for a student having a medical emergency. Our shooter drills, we lock doors, close the blinds, if possible, fit into an office/closet or bathroom within the room you are already in. If those aren't there you go to a corner of the room with the least visibility and get low

This sucks. I teach. This has to stop. Kudos to this brave teen woman. Proud of her.

Damn the more of these that happen the more I realize I’m probably the one who people in my class think would do it, even though I’m just quiet but have never had an evil thought in my days.

The reporter is annoying! Her delivery of questions is ridiculous. I'm serious. She needs to get fired

My heart goes out to the victims. The really sad part is that if this kid got the help he needed and good friends, there would not be a shooting. This could have been avoided.

I’d be a mess if I were just involved in something like that. She’s pretty calm for it to be so fresh. And not looking the reporter in the eyes.
