My understanding on gold plating is, it's for cases where you have a silver allergy. No difference in sound. I've got a number of trumpet mouthpieces including, yes, one that's gold plated that I got a screaming deal on. My favorite is a cheapo Blessing 3C that's been around the block a time or two.

@@alexcarter8807 on flute, the metal actually matters alot. For example, a gold lip plate vs a silver lip plate is going to sound different even if they have the same cut. Some poeople sound better on gold, some dont!

Gold plating is literally micrometers in thickness, if you saw it side on, it would be far too think to even see with the naked eye, literally thousandths of a millimeter thick. The purpose is for aesthetics and, as houtblazer pointed out, those who have adverse reactions to silver.

I’ve had the Yamaha YFL 362H with the gold lip plate for 4.5 years when I got it for my 16th birthday in 2016. Absolutely loved it since day 1! The gold lip plate makes the tone warm which is what I love about my flute! I’m still playing on the flute to this day in my college band. I’m hopefully looking into upgrading to a professional flute or even getting my own piccolo when I transfer or even in grad school

I have a huge place in my heart for Yamaha flutes. I started on Buffet then went to a YFL 221SII that belonged to my grandfather. I played it for years as I’m just a hobbist and couldn’t afford an upgrade. I actually didn’t realize I need an upgrade until I was telling a friend who is a professional flutist about my struggles and she mentioned everything I was having trouble with was a sign that I’d put grown my flute. This spring I found a spectacular deal on a used Yamaha YFL 385II with a gold lip plate. Im in love. It’s got a beautiful low end and my family appreciate the less squeaky high end. It’s likely my forever flute so I’m glad.

I like 462II the most. And that was clear before looking at the prices. The golden lip plate on the second flute made an exceptional difference. I was expecting a subtle brighter colour that I, as someone not playing the flute, wouldn‘t recognize. But it‘s insane. The 362II only silver model was too dark and closed for my taste. 462II is neutral and therefore pleasing me.

I started playing flute and violin 🎻 in the fourth grade, switched between the two of them until sixth grade. Then I played violin in the orchestra for sixth and seventh grade and then switch back to Flute in the eighth grade and was in the band, the marching band. High school I play flute the entire four years. And then I stopped after I graduated from high school. I picked up my flute as an adult in my mid-40s. I happened to find, come across a slightly out of tune Flute at the salvation Army in San Francisco. I had it checked out and it was OK. It’s a Selmer Bundy student model. I’ve been playing it now for just about eight years, with an occasional tuneup. I started taking flute class (woodwinds) at my local community college. It’s interesting now that I’m playing again that I realize how many bad habits I had back in high school. My instructor is helping me work those out of my system. I got the Yamaha 481 925 silver back in 2004. I think it was discontinued years ago. It sounds like the 462H is a very similar model. If you take excellent care of it, it will last a lifetime. Mine is almost 20 years old and I've never had to change the pads. It's in excellent condition and it still sounds great. I think if someone is on a budget should consider the 481 model if they can find it in good condition. It's very important to try your flute before you buy. I know everyone orders online but no review will ever compare to how you feel when you play it. I went to a music store that had a large flute selection. I was there for over an hour and played 5 different flute brands before I decided on the Yamaha. I also tried multiple models before I picked the 481. Like I mentioned before, if you maintain a well made instrument it will last a lifetime.

I started on a student Gemeinhardt. My step-up in high school was an Armstrong 80 (the one with the gold lip plate). It served me well through high school (loved the band festivals) and college. I was a vocal performance major who played a little flute on the side. I recently upgraded to a lovely Muramatsu GX heavy wall (with C# trill - yay!) and acquired an awesome Trevor James Copper Alloy Alto Flute last year. I love these gorgeous instruments! Congrats on getting your grade 8. Huge achievement. If you're at that level definitely look more at entry level professional e.g. Altus, Muramatsu, Miyazawa PB series, Sankyo, Yamaha 500 or 600 series, Pearl 695 or 795. You will most likely already have outgrown the step ups. Have fun.

I love how you sound on all the flutes! I remember when I upgraded from my Gemeinhardt to my Altus (my current flute), I was learning the Poulenc Sonata, Bach E Major Sonata, and Carmen Fantasy at the same time and it was frustrating when I didn’t get the sound that I wanted. I got my Altus just in time for my undergrad senior recital (It took me two months to break into the flute). I like the 400 series.

I ended up having a really unusual journey in that I started on a cheap flute I bought for 100$ on ebay during my senior year of high school, then I ended up getting to borrow a Trevor James Privilege with closed hole and C footjoint (so a step-up flute but with the beginner options) from my aunt for free for a few years which was a massive upgrade for me. Then the time for me to upgrade from the privilege came when my cousin's daughter was going to need to use the privilege so I took that time to upgrade and got my Pearl PF-885. I was going to upgrade to an intermediate one but the used handmade PF-885 happened to be in my price range and it impressed me way more than the others I tried so I bought that one. Which I play on to this day.

I'm playing on the Muramatsu EX III since November, after about 9 years I had really outgrown my student Yamaha model (although I got a lot out of it) and upgraded :) Open holes weren't really an issue after about two weeks and the sound is even more open and focused now 😊 still in love with my "new" flute, took some time to get used to it though

I'm beginner-ish changing over from trumpet and I plan to get a 362H because ... open holes are rad. You can do neat stuff with them. I made a transverse flute out of PVC and an old wine cork from plans online and it was a piercing little thing. Plus partial-holing was necessary to play chromatically at all. Now I'm learning the shakuhachi and that's all about partial holing and bending notes with the enbouchure. So I gotta have my open holes.

I play a Gemeinhardt 3OB (open hole, b footjoint, fully silver plated). When you played the 462H with the golden lip plate, I immediately was able to tell that it's got a very warm and fluffy sound to it. I preferred the 362 tho. Like, I've never played on gold or silver before but I think I like silver more

At some point, I upgraded to a Sankyo Etude B (now 201) and they were $1800, not the $4500 of today! It was a really easy blower, and great for modern playing, but I also had this hankering for something more traditional, and ended up getting a Muramatsu EX, but over time I felt that its silver headjoint was lacking, too pure and a little too stiff, so, to avoid recutting it, Sherry Lee hooked me up with a used Powell silver headjoint, philharmonic cut, and that did the trick, a very workable head.. I still play both flutes, depending on what I’m doing, and I’ll even slide on the Muramatsu headjoint occasionally, so it’s like I have 3 sopranos lol. I can’t believe the EX is approaching $5,000 these days! Flutes are so darn expensive. My dream flute used to be around 4-5k, now definitely over 10k.. oh well. Can’t outgrow my current flutes at this point, so no big deal.. Cheers!😘🥳

At least with flutes .... well, that's still cheap compared to violins! I've got a friend who plays violin for tips and he's good, too. But you'd not believe the bothersome things.... he just plain eats bows, probably a couple a year. He just gets cheapies for $100 or so. Strings are pricey too, with a decent set costing about $75. Often it's mix and match, because one set of strings is good but you really need an E (highest, thinnest) string made by someone else that's gold or platinum plated. Plus he tells me when it's windy, the wind actually blows the bow around and makes it harder for him. And of course the violin is made of wood so it's going to be very finicky. With a flute, so what if it drizzles a little, the flute's just going to laugh at that. The only wind that's going to bother you will be almost a gale.

Excellent video comparing the subtle variations between intermediate flutes. I would have to vote for the 462 as the best sounding of these 3; overall warmer tone, quicker response, and it seemed the mechanism allowed a more fluid playing style. I recently upgraded from my second-hand student Armstrong 104. After side-by-side play testing an Azumi, a Yamaha, and a Trevor James, (don't recall the model numbers of the Azumi or Yamaha, sorry) I found that the tone, intonation, and overall feel of the Trevor James (Fanfare I) to be the best fit for me. I've only been playing flute for (almost) 2 years, but my teacher thought I was at a point to start considering an intermediate flute, and I'm really glad I did. I don't plan to ever sell or trade my Armstrong - there's a certain bond with a first flute, but my TJ has really allowed me to improve my playing much more quickly then I had been achieving with my Armstrong.

I liked the 462H the best and have played the same flute under the old model number 481(inline G). If I ever need a secondary flute, the Yamaha 400 series is always a good bet.

"Back in the day" - because I am older - I went from my 1976 Armstrong student flute to a Sankyo Artist (401 equivalent now). I love it and still play it. I did go and purchase a Powell and a Pearl 795 Coda later on and am still "upgrading". My Pearl sounds amazing with my Muramatsu headjoint! Don't stick to a brand. Each flute has a personality. Choose what is best for you. Good luck players!

I started on a stainless steel flute. Boosey and Hawkes, if I remember right. Then a Gemeinhardt open hole silver, with optional hole plugs, and a Gemeinhardt wooden piccolo. The flute was good and the piccolo was a terrific instrument that I played until the end. After high school I worked for an entire year to pay for a Muramatsu with a gold embouchure plate. 1500 dollars in 1974 and I sold it for 1700 dollars in 1980. I wanted to be a flute player and as ridiculous as that was I gave it a good try. It was the hardest I ever worked at anything and the concentration involved in music was a handy skill for running geophysical instruments and surveys. It’s not a path that I would recommend to anyone else but loved playing and the people in music.

I had a very ... chaotic ... upbringing and as an adult I've had to teach myself music and the habit of regular practice. It's magic. I also discovered I had a knack for a sport as an adult and something told me if I practiced a ton, daily, I could go places and I did - around the world and in the running for the Olympics at one time. Music's harder! And much more worth it.

I was 24 years old when I sold my flutes, which might seem young, but life had revolved around music since I was in the fourth grade. Playing for fun just wasn’t fun anymore. At seventeen I was accepted into the Marine band in Washington and that was the high point of possibilities for becoming a professional and and artist. I refused the offer and spent six more years trying to make it work. I got university scholarships but that wasn’t enough. I couldn’t work and play five hours a day and attend school all at once so I gave up. Anyway, that’s a thumbnail of my story.

They all sound good! I played flute a bit, long ago, it's got to be 7 or 8 years now. I got out on the street (busking) and I remember making pretty decent money especially considering how I must have sounded. It was with a Yamaha 2000AD so a beginner flute. I went back to trumpet and over the intervening years got a more "mature" tone and last summer did some busking for a few months and basically earned enough to get a 362H which I am serious considering doing. I've gotten interested in playing the shakuhchi which is a Japanese type of flute - far less forgiving than a Western concert flute! But, it's possible to do really neat stuff on it. The trumpet and the shakuhachi are pretty much the opposite of each other in the type of breathing and technique from each other and I've thought about it a bit and since I don't want to abandon Western music, I think I'm going to treat myself to a new 362H. I'll have two different musical tubes to huff and puff into, twice the fun! Plus busking season is coming up in a couple of months and I'd like to get out there making some money again. I won't be ready to do *that* with my shakuhachi for years lol.

Really good informative videos well done, this is one of the many positives with modern technology. I was looking for some advice I'm going to say I'm complete novice because the last time a played or managed to get a sound out of a flute was many, many years ago in school. Now I've decided to start all over again and I'm really enjoying it more than anything but want to take it seriously at some point. I do like/enjoy a challenge so was wondering can a beginner invest in an intermediate flute with open holes. I know this would be more challenging but I've got some funds to go towards one rather now than later, as I'm now committing myself 15-20 minutes a day plus reading. This by no means will I think it will speed up and/or get me sooner rather than later. Currently I have a beginners flute which I've been told by a technician is ok for now, no rush but would be great to hear if you have come across beginners going straight to an intermediate flute with say plugs.

I bought a flute off of craigslist that I cant find much info on it says ravel on it, it has inline open hole keys, it has a b foot, and the lip plate is gold, I have seen ravel student flutes on line by Gemeinhardt, but I called them and they said if their name is not on it with the ravel name it is not theirs, but anyway that is the flute I have, I am still pretty much a beginner.

Had an old Trevor James secondhand flute and just recently uprgraded it to Yamaha YFL272 with open holes. It doesn't sound that much as an upgrade. I was also trying a silver plated Yamaha YFL212 flute from the same range like my current one and I got a question. When I was comparing those two Yamaha, I felt like the silver plated one was inferior. The tone lacked depth, the high register was too sharp and the low register was kinda dull. I expected much more from a silver plated instrument. Is it because my current one is a higher category or because I have to practice more to reach the potential the silver plate offers?

What about renting a high-end flute starting as a beginner for about 2 months and then after first scales are sounding ok, then buy a 1st cheap $70 Amazon flute.

no, it’ll be harder for u to start. start with a cheap but decent quality beginner flute and then like 1-2 years later upgrade to an intermediate one

switch cuz i started playing in sixth grade w a beginner flute then during mid 8th grade i upgraded to yamaha yfl 462 gold lip plate and it was a really nice upgrade

I’m sorry but I feel that if you’re not buying an instrument for your kid to find out if they stick with it go all out and buy a great true quality instrument. If you’re buying for yourself why not ? It’s your money so if you get bored it’s all on you. Otherwise if you like it then why would you spend x amount only to get a certain level to have to spend more to upgrade? Plus a cheap beginner is going to be really hard to get sound out (she mentions that) So buy something that won’t cause a collapsed lung.
