Students, parents confront New Berlin school board over comments about race, Black History Month

Several parents, students and members of the community turned out to a school board meeting in New Berlin on Monday night to express their outrage over comments made by board members regarding race and Black History Month at a meeting last month.

In studying learning more about marginalized groups, which I don’t with, is there no way to do so unemotionally, factually, and critically that doesn’t make everyone today in this country think they’re lives aren’t up to them now? If you’re black, you’ve been growing up in a country that will never let you be successful because of racism so you shouldn’t even try tbh. You’re black and will always be oppressed and if you do become successful it’s only because the white man gave it to you to feel better. And if you’re white, you can hang it up righttttt noowwwww. No matter where you live, what you’ve been through, who you are as a person inside does not matter if you’re white on the outside. Whatever success you find in life, whatever you may accomplish, all of the achievements you could possibly reach are unearned, unfair, and you don’t deserve them either. You are privileged, and you should be ashamed of yourself as a natural born oppressor.

If they want to stop Black history month, then they need to stop all these nonsense holidays like Independence Day, or these days for presidents that have died years ago, these white celebrations like Easter and Christmas. Stop all that, let’s just not have any holidays at all because y’all have days named after people who came and destroyed millions of lives; Columbus Day. Like whattt?

@@rb13atgm They have always regulated it. I remember when I went to school from 80s to 90s there was no black history month. I remember for history we learned a little about slavery, the Egyptians, Native Americans, Syrians, Mesopotamia and MLK. The rest was about Europe and what white Americans did. In fact I thought all the other Americans contributed little to nothing. I thought white people invented dang near everything. I had to learn on my own about who created paper money, who created the current numbers we use today, black Wall Street and other successful black towns, black innovators, Native American innovators, and many many other things. I thought Timbuktu was just an expression of a place in the middle of nowhere. The bottom line is there is so much rich history that can be taught within just America itself. Each American has made great contributions. The school systems could use some diversity in its history lessons.
