Being a native and resident of Alabama, which in many places has failing schools, I can attest that giving the state full control of the education system is a disastrous idea. Many conservatives would prefer children go to for-profit private schools (which do NOT promise better education) than improving our under-funded and inadequately funded public school system. They want to create a system where wealthy, primarily white children are able to attend good schools while the poor attend separate, worse schools. A federal administration to standardize schools and protect childrens' rights is so incredibly important. Does the DOE need revising? Possibly. Does power need to be "sent back to the states?" Absolutely not.

14:51 How are we going to get people to become firefighters and police officers if we aren’t willing to forgive their student debt? WHY DO FIREFIGHTERS AND POLICE OFFICERS NEED TO HAVE STUDENT DEBT IN THE FIRST PLACE? Part of the problem in this country is that we waste resources educating people to do jobs that require either no or only specialized higher education. California recently started a pilot program offering four-year degrees through community colleges. The two schools in my area started offering bachelors degrees in Dental Hygiene and Automotive Repair.

Funny how you think that what we were being taught before the 2010s wasn't part of an agenda. Haha! NEWS FLASH: all of it was...and still is. Accurate history, from different perspectives, need to be taught; not the propaganda from White men who only want you to see and know of their accomplishments and perspective. A lot of different people made this country what it is today, good and bad. School is a place to learn and be taught to expand the mind, not limit it the way you clearly want to. Most Republicans know that if most people were smarter, with good critical thinking skills, and an unwillingness to embrace their internalized racism, misogyny and anti-LGBT teachings, then someone as toxic, backwards, blatantly corrupt and transparent as Donald Trump (or any Republicans really) would NEVER get elected to the highest office in these United States.

The education system deserves to be dismantled. Public education in this country is dominated by overpaid, parasitic administrators who do nothing but make life difficult on teachers and staff. They let the parents and students run the show. They bow down to the almighty consultants that preach "new theories" in education despite there being no proof they work. The consultants convinced administrators that phonics is outdated, now these kids can't read. Testing companies sold testing packages up the wazoo, now they have to teach to the test. There's no book on the test, so the kids have never read a book. Many education departments have eliminated after school detention, Saturday suspensions and other consequences and the kids run all over them. Education allowed salesmen to come in and run them raw. Universities have long been a money grab. They keep charging more and more because they know people will pay for it. They convinced employers that workers don't deserve to be paid a fair wage if they didn't go to school for some arbitrary BS to work a job that has nothing to do with it. It's so backwards. Most middling office jobs that require degrees can be learned in four months. Inexpensive, four to seven month certificates should suffice for just about any job, discounting the medical, law, or engineering and related fields. There's no reason why someone with a psychology degree should be getting paid more than someone with a decade of experience. If you want someone who can commit to something and exhibit discipline, hire a vet with at least 4 years active duty service with an honorable discharge. I'd rather hire that person over some poor soul with 50,000 in debt and a communications degree. This system is broken. Tear it down. We have nothing to lose.

I believe we need to reinforce the principle of subsidiarity, the idea that a central authority should have a subsidiary function, performing only those tasks which cannot be performed at a more local level. Decisions that are made locally are more responsive to the needs of the people they serve. A top-down system leads more easily to authoritarianism, to one and only one way of thinking. "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." There is no reason to believe that the services afforded by the federal Department of Education cannot be provided at the state level. Some may argue that if things are turned over to the states, certain programs will fall by the wayside. Again, that assumes that there is "one and only one way" of addressing the need. By allowing the states, whose elected officials are closer to the actual needs of the people, to implement their own programs, we will likely find a lot more creativity and success in how these needs can be addressed. Less government, more freedom.

Abolishing the D of Ed will increase the wealth gap (and maybe the project 2025 plan is to make education accessible only to the wealthy). Many poor families rely on fed aid loans to be able to afford college. On the other hand, I agree that the states should be in charge of their own education, as they all have very different needs and priorities. Wealthy states like California and Texas will do fine without the D of Ed, but poor states like Alabama and Louisiana will not.

In hindsight, knowing what I know about student loans now, I would not have taken loans out and would not have went straight from highschool to College. I would have worked for 10 years, saved my money, then went to a small affordable community college. No 17 or 18 year old should be allowed to sign out mortgage sized loans on a piece of paper. Student loan interest rates need to be capped and college tuition needs transparency, it's the total real cost is buried like our medical system. I didn't know what to major in and my college advisor said "just keep taking classes, you'll figure out what you want to do." That was the most costly advice I've ever taken. I should have known better, but at 17 with parents who knew nothing of college; I was on my own.

It’s funny that they actually debate whether public education should be made a priority or not. If you look up the history of who created the public school system and why you’ll discover it was solely for the purpose of positing people to be blue collar workers. So yes, many republicans do have a have and have nots mentally when it comes to education because that’s what it was founded on. Let’s be honest, most people who can afford private school do not send their children to public school because they want them to have a leg up in life when competing with their peers. Look at who’s getting majority of the full ride scholarships. It’s not public school kids. Ts the kids whose parents are more likely to be able to afford their tuition.
