I've been trying to figure out why I'm getting so many comments suggesting an air conditioner, when I explained in depth that I had tried that, so I rewatched the video and... hey, how about that, I didn't explain it! Or, rather, I did, but my finger must have slipped during editing because that clip is gone. Well. That explains it. In short: - I tried a portable AC unit; it did literally nothing, standing right in front of it you couldn't tell it was running. - On days when it was much cooler outside I tried a fan in the window. It worked until I turned it off, and the moment the blades stopped spinning the room was like an oven again. - I talked to the landlord about installing a serious AC unit and he no-billed it. The walls are extremely thick brick and the owner doesn't want anyone drilling through it. I personally do not think an AC would help, the heat is coming from everywhere at once and I think I would waste $7000 getting it put in, and then the millisecond I turned it off the room would become an oven again. Several people have also asked why I don't just move the studio to the new room. There are a TON of reasons, literally too many to get into here, but it comes down to: The current studio is perfect _except for the heat problem_, which I have to believe is temporary. If it doesn't prove to be... well, I'll reassess, but for now, it's best where it is.
@sebastian19745
@sebastian19745 10 күн бұрын
The walls are extremely thick brick. You have the answer for why is so hot there. The sun heat the walls and they retain the heat, releasing it slowly inside, all day. The new space do not have the walls heated and more, being in the shadow, they absorb the heat from inside and slowly radiate it outside. One way to protect the studio from heat, it would be to add a insulation solution on all that wall. May be a sanwich of [air, reflective sheet, styrofoam, air, wood panel]. Ask someone more knowledgeable about and try this solution if you feel so.
@SockyNoob
@SockyNoob 10 күн бұрын
Fixing the heat situation would literally require replacing the walls or gutting the interior to put proper insulation and piping for a central A/C, so I can understand why the landlord wouldn't want it. It's easier to keep yourself cool than the rooms themselves. Lots of good stuff for that that don't cost $7k. Still wouldn't recommend staying in there for hours at a time though, it's basically a brick oven.

Removing a couple hundred watts of networking gear and that computer should at least take the edge off. I noticed the warehouse was on the opposite side of the building from the studio, if the studio were on the south side of the building and warehouse on the north, it might explain the temperature difference, since the warehouse would be getting far less direct sun. Maybe ceramic window tinting on the outside of the studio window would help reduce the heat load further.

Because it's across the hall, this new arrangement also gives you flexibility for when it gets even damned hotter next year - worst case, you can flipflop (at least part of) the warehouse and the studio. Reading between the lines (the light through the windows) the studio is on the south side of the building and the warehouse is on the north, and thus gets a lot less heat from the sun.
@cfg83
@cfg83 11 күн бұрын
You read my mind because I wanted to say the same. If the Studio window is operable, then I would SERIOUSLY consider trying to shade it from the outside while you are working. Once the sunlight comes through the window, it's too late. In addition, the brick interior implies to me that it's an old brick building. That makes it a high mass element soaking up the heat in the summer. If I were you then I would put a temp/humidity gizmo in the rooms for data acquisition. This will give you a good feel for the best times to work throughout the year.
@colausbra
@colausbra 11 күн бұрын
Also possible to add an ac in between the recording space and the larger half of the room. Suboptimal since it'll increase the temp of that half but would work in a pinch to stop camera fans from turning on.

Honestly my favorite part of this channel is getting a look at the behind the scenes of technical equipment and media infrastructure, and so I was a fan of the benchtop vids. With regard to the video mixers, I think what would be the most interesting way to frame it would really be to look at the development of the technology over time, rather than to try and tell a story about any one video mixer (which at the end of the day is just a hunk of undifferentiated technical commodity)

FWIW, You're not letting me down. Maybe a little by not finishing the Response Point video, but hey, it's your channel. You do what you do and if I find the topic interesting (which is more often the case then not), then I am here for it. Glad to see you organized your space, and I can't wait for season 4.

I genuinely enjoyed the workbench videos... but seeing this new space is absolutely thrilling. I would love to see videos made just the same way you demoed that switcher: no plan, just some cuts for time, and seeing how you'd set something up from storage in your collection. Can't wait for Season 4--what a great opportunity for me to finally join the Patreon.

I’ve enjoyed the videos for a long time and caught up with old ones-the thrifting trips are nostalgic and a hoot to have on and listen to the quips along with seeing old electronics some of which looks familiar others not. Yours is one of a handful of channels that combines disparate styles of technology presentation from teardowns to assemblies to vintage electronic/computer showcases and analyses. I’m liking that you’ll have better access to more goodies in your warehouse now; keep peppering your channel with those little guy videos-I like variety too but those deep dives have really kept my attention and engaged me lately. Many require several watches to get everything, and that’s freaking awesome! In any case, congrats on the space addition and here’s to more awesome videos!

What a great video to see. I remember when I first started watching you and I commented on one of your videos, and you replied back almost instantly! Knew right then and there you were deidcated to not only the content you make but your audience too.
