When the first notes of Fine on the Outside played I wasn't able to hold back my tears. When Marnie was There is my favorite movie of all time! It made me reconnect with the memories of my old grandma, and was the first movie to actually send me into sobs by the end. I can't think of any work of art that speaks to me more than that movie; no other movie, no song, no show... Nothing. That's one of those movies I just can't explain, just like it did to you, it changed my life forever. It's truly a love letter to Ghibli itself, and to me, it's a love letter to my dear grandma. Thank you for the way you talked about that movie, it means a lot to me.

I'm like 10 months late but great video! I'm happy to see When Marnie Was There finally getting the love and praise that it deserves, since as far as I've observed, it's often not talked about much or just simply overlooked.

A lot of people say that WMWT is just okay, but since the moment I watched it I was completely blind by my favorite animated movie of all time

I love that you have When Marnie Was There right at the top! Your segment on the film was a wonderful culmination for your video! When Marnie Was There caught me by complete surprise, making it by far the most emotional and impactful animated viewing experience I’ve ever had! It’s funny because although Grave Of The Fireflies is an amazing work of art, it’s reputation prevented me from crying because my expectations were so high! I deeply respect Grave Of The Fireflies, and will definitely revisit it to see if I feel differently. But ultimately, When Marnie Was There had the biggest impact on me over any other animated film. It’s one of the most relatable and personal films I’ve ever come across, and is grossly under appreciated! Great list overall! 👍

almost cried during the marnie segment. I had a very similar experience with the film, although sadly a few aspects didnt work for me. it still feels like their most meaningful work and it really shaped my way of thinking. amazing video :)

Glad to see someone appreciating When Marnie Was There as much as me and wife do. That movie will always have a special place in our hearts forever. I also like Pom Poko so much more than everyone else like my wife likes porco rosso. Now we have a little boy who we look forward to sharing our love for ghibli films.

So I always thought the help's reasons for wanting to capture the borrowers in Arrietty was a bit more complicated than the way you describe it: Earlier in the movie, they make a point to establish the significance of the dollhouse not only to the grandma, but its value as a work of art. They also establish that the help can't believe that a family would commissions world-class artisans to craft such an immaculate (and fully functional) miniature mansion for the sole purpose of having tiny people live in it. Frankly, I think the only reason she snapped and became hell-bent on exterminating the little people was because she believed they were directly in the way of her getting the dollhouse. The grandma is old (obviously), and someone had to inherit the dollhouse. Presumably no one else in the family was interested in it, so the person it likely would've been inherited by is the boy. But since the boy was terminally ill and the surgery he was going to have had a chance to go wrong, the help wrote him off as a non-threat. But then she learned the little people are real and she panicked because if the grandma learned of their existence being real, THEY would be next in line to get the dollhouse. TLDR: The help set about to exterminate the borrowers because she wanted the dollhouse for herself (likely to sell it because it was likely worth a small fortune), and they were a direct obstacle to her inheriting it.

Glad I'm not the only one who found the tsunami a bit distracting in Ponyo, even though everyone seems pretty chill with their houses wholly submerged. Edit: And agreed she's more delightful as a fish ;-)

This is the most underrated video on KZbin. Although Ocean Waves was way too high, I don't get why people think it's better than Earthsea.
@terrivehrenkamp1124 Жыл бұрын
I was disappointed but ok when you ranked ponyo fairly low, but when you ranked nausicaa just after I was frankly appalled. Nausicaa is the reason Ghibli exists and even now, 40 years later it's story and theme are still valid and can easily translate to newer generations.

How is that relevant to how much somebody enjoys the movie though - sure its iconic, sure its the foundation of ghibli, but that doesn't make it the best

I think everyone is wrong about Earthsea. It’s such a solid enjoyable film. The father kill at the beginning is unforgivable and a huge writing mistake, but if you pretend he just stole his father’s sword, it’s a pretty magical movie. I don’t understand the hate. It’s two gorgeous hours with Earthsea Gandalf. Cozy.

Dislike for giving 7 for giving 7th position, go rewatch Edit: your problem is you are watching because you have to make a list, and seen its runtime before watching & got scared. Just a tip: watch ghibli movie when you have time not just because you have to watch

No doubt when Marnie was there is very good movie, I think you rate it very highly because of your personal circumstances, not the impact it had on vast number of people. More than few movies can give you the message Marnie was there delivers, but very few delivers what Spirited away or Princess Mononoke delivers.

notice that you are not a terribly artistic person. you don't notice small important things. and you don't understand the real message of the movies. (never mind.. I just finished watching the video?
