Message to artists
I tried very hard to credit ever artist featured, but do to some deleted blogs/ how viral some of these images are, it was occasionally not possible to find a proper source, and theres a chance some of these images could be credited to a blog that featured them as opposed to the artists account themselves. If you see your art in this video uncredited, you can either email my business email (found on my twitter) or reply to the announcement tweet of this video, and we will get you properly credited.

Hey guys. This is my longest video ever, and by far the one I've put the most time and energy into, and the only reason I can do that with an idea this weird, is the support I get on patreon, so first up, thank you to everyone who supports me, you make unreasonable projects like this possible, and second, if you liked this video and want to help support the slow decent into madness that has been this channel, you can do so at: www.patreon.com/Supereyepatchwolf I'm also gonna be hosting a patron discord hang out in the near future where I talk to patrons one on one, so feel free to drop by for that (more info on my discord) But as ever, whether you're a patron or not thanks for watching. I'm going to lie down for several days now, and spend a bit of time resting up cause I am burnt out in the next few weeks, and I hope you do the same. Its a weird world out there, but thanks for checking out my videos, and ill see you in the new year.

Wild how Garfield can be such a pervasive, daily comic for 50 straight years and then less than 10 years on the internet he's transformed into something barely recognizable.
@ElysetheEevee
@ElysetheEevee 5 ай бұрын
It's been more than ten years for his transformation. Hell, Lasagna Cat was 2008, and then again in 2017. We are almost into 2024. If you go by that timeline alone, we're into nearly 15 years. Add into that the bizarreness and subtle obsession with Garfield just being online in general, and you're getting into well over a couple decades.

Garfield Minus Garfield absolutely blew my mind when I first discovered it. The idea of a seemingly innocent newspaper comic being turned into a morbid descent into madness all by simply erasing a single character was something I never considered before and it was just as effective as this video implies at making me see the original Garfield comics in a whole new light.

@@galenburghardt3272I guess it depends on the location and which newspaper. Back when I lived in Southern California, back in the late 90's and early 2000's there were 2 comics that dominated both daily and Sunday in the newspaper comics section. Foxtrot was seen, though I didn't see much of Hagar the Horrible if ever. I'm stating my experiences and what I saw from the OC Register back then. I did see others like Little Orphan Annie, Doonesbury, and even a bit of Dennis The Menace. Surprisingly I don't recall seeing Calvin and Hobbes though. Though the titanic king of newspaper comics was Peanuts by Charles Schultz or was regularly placed at the top of the comics section, Garfield would be in second place. The Sunday comics basically proved that as Peanuts was first shown and taking up the most space.

She doesn't know where she got it, or why she had it, since she knew barely anything about Garfield. When my Grandma moved house, she was going to get rid of the statue, but I held onto it for nostalgia's sake and it still sits on a shelf in my bedroom. A detail that jumped out while observing "The Forgiveness of Jon" Garfield has a Tendril, albeit a weak one, wrapped around Jon's calf. The fight may never end, but there *will be victory*.
@JackHallowLantern
@JackHallowLantern 5 күн бұрын
The best detail about that tendril is that it's wrapped around the armoured part of Jon's leg, not reaching past the armour. Jon has steeled himself against Garfield, unable to be hurt futher even if Garfield will never completely let him go. That is why Jon forgives Garfield. Garfield is a pathetic parasite, evil, but ultimately only as strong as it can be when feeding off fear or negativity or whatever else it revels in. But if Jon is armoured, he is saved. Now, in future battles, he will have a way to defend himself against the evil, a major victory for someone who started off almost completely powerless.

did not expect myself to cry about a video on garfield but damn it was emotional. when you were talking about the forgiveness of john and how he finally rises above everything and you say that he might fall again, you add on that it's fine because for now he's okay, and that just broke me. it's a really realistic take on life and it hits deeper than saying that you'll overcome everything and become strong forever because in reality life is a lot of ups and downs and achievements and failures. you really have a talent for timing humor and horror and conveying it so well in all of your videos, and this goes beyond a deep dive and into a great perspective on life as a whole. thanks for the great video!

A thing I like about a good chunk of the Gorefield genre is the fact Jon is depicted as being brave enough to try and fight back, normally drawn with his shotgun or another type of weapon, Jon is face to face with a being beyond his understanding that wishes nothing more then to torment him, and it doesn't break his will to try and kill Garfield, the pieces that depict him as almost the last spark of humanity and existence really speak to me.

Been a john just as long, but nothing wrong with accepting His first interpterion of Garfield, an acceptance of Depression and Nihilism, or how I prefer to say "getting over it". You don't have to succeed to be happy, that's a toxic train of thought that doesn't get talked about enough. Giving up is 100% a-ok. And don't let a bunch of brain chiropractors or some neurotypicals autism project (that was deep and profound) tell you that you have to succeed to be happy. I could do without the Positive End message of some Neurotypical who probably only went through Brief situational depression telling everyone to get help. Personally I say be a Garfield, let others work hard while you reap and relax in the repeatable entertainment that comes from a bunch of apparently depressed people born on the right side of the spectrum in what is arguably the best time period to ever exist. You don't need to accomplish jack shit, and thinking you have to is not healthy. Sorry but I'm toxic both ways

You could say the same thing for a Dilbert strip. Take out his office coworkers and he is just a sad lonely guy talking to himself. @Arrzarrina
@Arrzarrina 2 жыл бұрын
@@robotpanda77 The point is that Jon never actually hears anything from Garfield. Look at the middle step where Garfield is still present but his speech bubbles are removed. That doesn't work for Dilbert because the idea that this engineer is the only person in universe who communicates to anybody doesn't gel (especially considering that Dilbert uses a lot more dialogue). Silent Garfield or Realistic Garfield do a much better job of getting the reader to understand Jon than the vanilla Garfield strips as they show the absolute disaster of a human being that Jon is without the intended punchline.

Just yesterday; I asked my future mother-in law - in tears, hopelessly, what would I do with my despair if I didn't keep it down with a dependency on food. For context, I am type 1 diabetic and have been _potentially_ a majority of my life but have only been diagnosed in 2022. My relationship with food, particularly foods that contain carbohydrates has been torn asunder as I was (and have been) subconsciously using food to sorta cope with major depression. Nothing to look forward to all day except... what I would be having for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In that way, perhaps Garfield and I aren't too dissimilar. So, when I reached the end of the video, and saw Jon forgive this, embodiment of his despair and torment (particularly connected to gluttony and sloth) thus vanquishing it from him.... I guess, I feel like I wish I could be that strong. Find a way to forgive my emptiness and let my need to fill it go. Maybe it'll hurt for a long time, but I'll find something healthier to fill it with eventually.
@kingoftrashbabies

It does get easier over time, therapy helps. it's a long and difficult road you walk but I promise you that in the end you will be glad you fought and struggled to become a healthier happier version of yourself. Just try not to get too down on yourself if you slip up and find yourself falling back into bad habits. You're only human and we all stumble and make mistakes and even regress along the way but as long as you never give up and hold on to your goal with white knuckled determination you will succeed one day. If nothing else please know that, though we are strangers and may never know each other, there is at least one person out there in the world rooting for you.

@@juuchan5795 it's okay if you liked garfield before or even still like garfield now, or if it holds a special place in your heart, this video was amazing but it was just one facet on the subject, extremely interesting and informed in a basis of reality, but not entirely accurate, of course the real garfield is really just a funny cartoon cat 😅 If you want a little more brighter viewpoint watch Quinton reviews video "how garfield lost his magic" He goes over it, the history of garfield and where it got lost and at the end he talks about the staying power of garfield in pop culture much like supereyepatch. Through the supereyepatch view is how garfield has stuck around is kinda terrifying and a never ending cycle, that's one interesting way you can view it. But for quinton it's some what comforting to see garfield everywhere for him, it's like he's the same character that will always remain throughout time to always be around you, with the same comforting fun jokes that you instantly recognize and can revisit in an image, and there is something valuable in both viewpoints, or you can even hold onto to both perspectives if you want thats cool too, for me I hold both of them as valuable in different ways. I can definitely say that's true, for the most part. my cat passed away last year, after 18 years on this planet, and she was definitely one to pester for attention lol. but I think there was more to her than that. stop me if you think this sounds insane, but I got a story to tell: about 7 years ago, I was working on a dairy farm. the hours were terrible, and I rarely had a day off. the pay was shit. the owners were beligerent morons. I was so stressed working there, that I would find places to hide just so I could cry. I was a fucking mess, and so was my life. I staggered home one night, rolled a joint (back when I still smoked the leafy green), and sat in the back of my house, on the verge of tears. my cat followed me to my chair, but instead of clawing my leg or jumping on my lap uninvited like she normally would, she gently nuzzled her nose against my hand. when I looked down towards her, she wasn't looking for the next place to walk to; she was looking me right in the eyes. I think she knew something was going on with me and she was trying to comfort me. I never saw her do something like that before, and for that brief moment, I didn't feel so alone. so, while cats can definitely act like self-serving assholes, I do think that animals are smarter (or at least more aware) than we humans give them credit for. I miss that cat...

There is actually a comic where Jon says to himself "sometimes i wish you could talk garfield" thus proving that Jon doesn see or hear anything that wee see garfield say. So in the end of it all, Jon really is struggling and what we see gets so much more depressing.

There's also been several comics where Jon has supposedly heard Garfield. It's also a pretty common gag where Garfield says something to Jon to insult him or whatever and Jon gets this "are you kidding me?" look on his face. It's whatever would be most funny for that particular strip.

The "Garfield without Garfield" comics are interesting. Due to the lack of the titular character, we get to see more of John's reality, but it also drastically changes the context of some strips. I recognized a few as ones where he was originally upset about stupid amounts of cat hair, but without the cat, it just looks like he's upset about life in general.

Looking for Garfield and finding him everywhere even when he's not there because of pattern recognition is exactly the same phenomena that happened to loss and among us.
@1tylerq127
@1tylerq127 2 жыл бұрын
The thing about pattern recognition is that it cannot occur if there isn't a pattern to be recognized. And Garfield is chief among those things which have established themselves as firm patterns in our daily lives. There is a very real reason why the pattern is evident in the first place statistically speaking, but the patterns themselves are frequently commonplace enough that we often fail to recognize them. So when we do notice them, it's surprising and odd to think that such a pattern has been so present outside of our awareness.

I feel a nihilistic emptiness because of this video. But somehow, I also feel fulfilled. Garfield doesn't even exist. When his creator, Jim Davis, dies, he will persist without any form of inconvenience. Jim has no control over Garfield. He can only continue to feed it, Garfield is now controlled by the masses, an amorphous Lovecraftian concept that ends lives and consumes fantasies. When the heat death of the universe occurs, Garfield may still have some traces of his presence on the earth. I frickin love this video, though. Thank you, super eyepatch wolf, for giving me an existential crisis.
